Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church of Panhandle with the Rev. Eddie Tubbs of the church officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mr. Atkins was a native of Nocona and a Panhandle resident until moving to Amarillo five years ago. He married Roberta Hogue on April 2, 1943, in Amarillo, and served in the Air Force and the Army during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Panhandle. He retired with Phillips Petroleum Company as an operator, and worked in the trucking industry. Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife in September of 2000; his parents; and two brothers, Leon Atkins and Eddy Atkins. Survivors include two daughters, Paul Wood and husband, Bill, of Claude and Reva Roselius and husband, Jay, of Amarillo; a brothers, A.L. Atkins of Henrietta; grandchildren, Terri and Jason Roselius of Oklahoma City, Liz and Mike Hughes of Amarillo and Erin and Jerod Pingleton of Dumas. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 189, Panhandle, TX 79068, or to a favorite charity. Amarillo Globe-News, April 19, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- James "Jay" Shaw James "Jay" Shaw, 72, of Amarillo died Saturday, April 17, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Southlawn Baptist Church with Greg Kinch, pastor, and Johnny Dellis, chaplain of the Amarillo Fire Department, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Shaw served in the Navy. He married Mary Abbott in Amarillo in 1956. He retired as a captain from the Amarillo Fire Department after 32 years of service. Mr. Shaw was a Mason and a member of Southlawn Baptist Church. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was preceeded in death by a son, David Eugene Shaw, in 1995; and a sister, Re Oldham, in 1996. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sheryl Sowden and husband, Jody, of Amarillo and Beverly Guthrie and husband, Bobby, of Fritch; on son, Victor Shaw and wife, Donna, of Amarillo; two sisters, Frances Forrester of Amarillo and Josephine DiClemente of Maitland, Fla.; one brother, Henry Shaw of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Melissa Reynolds of Wichita Falls, Chris Anderson and wife, Angela, and Taylor Anderson, all of Amarillo, and B.J. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel. Mrs. Darnell was born in Shamrock. A resident of Amarillo for 55 years, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.B. Darnell, in January 2003, and a son, Robert Darnell, in 1971. Survivors include three sons, Michael Darnell, Randy Darnell and Ron Smith; three daughters, Melissa Darnell, Sandra Ritchie and Lynda Owen; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with the Rev. Sherman Eastland of Northwest Texas Healthcare Systems officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Nashville, Ark. Mr. Roland was born in Hale Center, Ark., and lived much of his life in Arkansas before moving to Amarillo in 2001. He was a police officer and served as chief deputy marshall in Foreman, Ark. He worked as a driver for Amarillo Towing since moving to Amarillo. Marty loved racing cars and was a race car driver at the Route 66 Motor Speedway. Among others he raced car No. 49. He was a Christian and loved to sing and play the guitar. Survivors include his wife, Cathy; three sons, Ian Messman of Amarillo, Wesley Tolliver of Fayetteville, Ark., and Dillain Roland of Wichita Falls; three daughters, Alyssa Messman of Amarillo, Victoria Roland and Marti Lynn Roland, both of Wichita Falls; his parents, Cliff Roland and wife, Sue, of Amarillo and Velma White and husband, Bobby, of Nashville; one brother, Ray Roland of Amarillo; and one sister, Lyn Reel of Wichita Falls. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel. Military honors will be conferred by Air Force peronnel from Altus Air Force Base in Altus, Okla. Mr. Roe was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Lincoln, Neb. He served in the Army Air Corps between 1941 and 1944 as an aircraft mechanic. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Dee Roe; two daughters, Connie McDowell and Lois Adamson, both of Pampa; two sons, Lloyd Dean Searl of Ventura, Calif., and Robert Gage of Sweetwater; three sisters, Blanche Amelang of Salem, Ore., Virginia Suesz of Lincoln, Neb., and Dorothy Schwi of Grand Island, Neb.; three brothers, Kenneth Roe of Crestline, Calif., Done Roe of Grand Island, Neb., and Roger Roe of Alabama; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, April 19, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rubye Hyatt Butler DIMMITT ----- Rubye Hyatt Butler, 90, of Farmington, N.M., died Thursday, April 15, 2004. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Howard Rhodes of First Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Foskey Lilley McGill Funeral Home. Mrs. Butler was born in Dimmitt to James and Annie Hyatt on Oct. 29, 1913. She had 11 brothers and sisters, and love of famiy became one of the guiding values throughout her life. Another solid cornerstone for her was education, first as a dedicated student, and later as a teacher. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class and went ont to attend West Texas State College in Canyon. College was interrupted by the great depression and her marriage to her life partner, Cullen Butler. However, she returned to school later at age 50 and graduated cum laude from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., with a degree in education. She initially taught in small rural schools in West Texas and later for more than ten years in the Farmington public school system. In Farmington, she taught at McCormick Elementary and Hermosa Junior High. Mrs. Butler spent her early years in West Texas, but as a young married couple after World War II, she and her husband opened a John Deere farm implement dealership at Shattuck in northwestern Oklahoma. They operated this business for several years before moving to Farmington in late 1956. In Farmington, she worked for a number of years for First National Bank of Farmington. In the mid-1960s, she fulfilled her dream of returning to college and having a teaching career. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Mesa, Ariz. They thoroughly enjoyed their new lifestyle, which included lots of travel, domestic and international. In 1993, due to her husband's poor health, they returned to Farmington to be near family. During the last five years Rubye resided at the Bridge at Life Care Center in Farmington, and she greatly appreciated the friendship and support she experienced there. Rubye loved her family and is greatly missed. Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, when he was 87. Survivors include a son, Sam and wife, Sherry; five grandchildren, Terri Butler, Kim Butler, Jennifer Butler Shannon, Amanda Butler Ford and Matthew Butler; and two great-granddaughter, Kara Butler and Carrington Ford. The family suggests memorials be to San Juan College Foundation, Emmanuel Baptist Church or a favorite charity. Amarillo Globe-News, April 19, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Dorothy Oliver Dean CANYON - Dorothy Oliver Dean, 88, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in North Richland Hills. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Holley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Lowrie, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Dean was born Dec. 19, 1915, in LaRue to Carl Oliver and Leona Miller Oliver. She married B.C. Dean on Dec. 25, 1939, in Athens. She was a public school teacher, a mother and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active as a Sunday school teacher. Survivors include a son, Wayne Dean of Grandbury; two grandchildren, Tony Dean of North Richland Hills and Susie Gaither of Fort Worth; and one great- granddaughter. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
