Nadine Ellis R. Nadine Ellis, 88, of Amarillo died Monday, April 19, 2004. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with R.A. Tindall and Keith Ellis, both elders, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Ellis was born in Tahoma. She had lived in Amarillo since 1954, where she volunteered for RSVP until her illness. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed. Much of her joy in life was her church and doing for others less fortunate. She was a member of Primitive Baptist Church for more than 65 years. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Gayle Barton and Deborah Louise Gilbert, both of Amarillo; three sons, James Darrell Ellis of Houston and Royce Dwaine Ellis and Keith Darwin Ellis, both of Fort Worth; three brothers, Hubert Dykes of Amarillo, Willard Dykes of Boise, Idaho, and Cecil Dykes of San Antonio; a sister, Lorraine Davis of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Melvin Suttle, pastor of San Jacinto Assembly of God Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mrs. Marsalis was born in Deer Creek and had been a resident of Amarillo for more than 60 years. She graduated from Canadian High School and attended Amarillo College. She married Wayland Marsalis on Jan. 4, 1934, in Altus, Okla. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of San Jacinto Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Gillespie and husband, Larry, of Amarillo; a son, Tony Marsalis and wife, Kay Ann, of Dallas; a sister, Christine Congers of Blackwell; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Myers was born to Walter and Stacy London on Sept. 4, 1925. She married Teddy Joe Myers in Hereford on Feb. 14, 1948. She graduated from Hereford High School and Draughn's Business College in Lubbock. She worked as a secretary for Lindsey and Newsom Insurance Co. She was a sweet, dear, Christian mother, sister and aunt. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. Survivors include a son, Monty Myers and wife, Sherry, of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Paul Ray London of Amarillo and Baxter London of Hereford; three grandsons, Matt Myers, Tony Myers and Russ Myers; a great-granddaughter, Emma Myers; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Riley was born in Guymon, Okla., and had been a resident of Amarillo for 38 years. She was a licensed vocational nurse. She was preceded in death by a son, Monty Stingley in 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Stingley and Patricia Inman, both of Amarillo; three sons, Laddy Stingley and Jerry Stingley, both of Amarillo, and Ben Stingley of Harlingen; a sister, Jewel Bohanan of Amarillo; two brothers, Lawson Grice of Hardesty, Okla., and Gail Grice of Goodwell, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, April 21, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Robert Emmett "Swede" Roark MEMPHIS - Robert Emmett "Swede" Roark, 93, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in Childress. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today in Hughs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with his grandchildren officiating. Mr. Roark was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Denver to the late Mr. Will Roark and Mrs. Eva Kratzer Roark. He attended South High in Denver and graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a degree in petroleum geology. While there, he was named a Walter Camp Little All-American football player. He married Jim Browder of Memphis on March 30, 1934, in Memphis. Their son, Rob Lee, was born on Jan. 9, 1935, in Denver. Swede was a teacher in Memphis before going to the West Texas oil fields. The Roarks made 15 moves before finally arriving in Fort Worth, where Swede was production vicepresident for a large independent oil company. In 1952, Swede contracted polio and was confined to an iron lung in Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. He vowed to escape and he did. He later earned a 2,500-hour pin for volunteer work at Harris Hospital. He left the independent oil company in the mid-1960s to become an independent geologist. Swede discovered a major oil field in Jack County in 1972. He was a 50-year lifetime member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He was a distinguished member of Fort Worth Oil Library and a charter member of Fort Worth Petroleum Club. Swede married Betty Newton on Sept. 12, 1972. They lived in Fort Worth for 24 years. Swede moved back to Memphis in February 2000. He was preceded in death by his first wife on Oct. 4, 1968; and his second wife on Nov. 15, 1996. Survivors include a son, Rob Lee Roark of Memphis; four grandchildren, Robbin Lee Kelly and J. Scott Roark, both of Fort Worth, Ben Jason Roark of Lubbock and Nicholas Aaron Roark of Weatherford; a stepson, Robert Newton of Houston; a sister, Lyda Conway of Denver and her six children, Bunny, James, Ann, Kathy, Maureen and Sheila; a nephew, Frank Browder Foxhall of Memphis; six great-grandchildren, Jacob Roark and Kathy Roark, both of Lubbock, Patrick Kelly and Ryan Kelly, both of Fort Worth and Madison and Baleigh Roark, both of Weatherford. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Bayley, pastor of Texline United Methodist Church in Texline, Texas, officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Beatty was born June 22, 1919, in Clayton to Fred Hollis Beatty and Allie Mae (Bowen) Beatty. He served as captain in the Marine Corps in World War II on Guadalcanal, Munda and Bougainville. He received the Silver Beaver award for his leadership in the Boy Scouts for many years. He founded several Boy Scout Troops in Texline and Clayton. He was very active in the volunteer fire department and was a volunteer ambulance driver. He started the Clayton Fire Department Scuba Diving Team. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clayton. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Eloise; a daughter, Dotty Beatty and companion, Larry Glover, of Santa Fe; a son, Fred Beatty and wife, Lanoma, of Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Pauline Abney of Hereford, Texas; two granddaughters, Emily Moore and husband, Brandon, of Amarillo and Lisa Beatty of Denton, Texas. Mr. Strader was born Nov. 3, 1956, in Clovis. He loved to fish, work on cars and ride motorcycles.
