Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Friday, April 30, 2004 Amarillo Kenneth Gibson Kenneth Gibson, 85, of Amarillo died Wednesday, April 28, 2004. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett, associate pastor, and Dr. Jim Bankhead, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Gibson was born in Paducah and graduated from Paducah High School in 1936. He married Christine Jarrett on Nov. 20, 1941, in Canyon. He then attended West Texas State Teachers College, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1946, and West Texas State College, where he received his master of education in 1951. He served with the Army Air Corps and received an honorable discharge on Jan. 20, 1946. Mr. Gibson served as president of Amarillo School Administration Association from 1977 to 1978, was Texas PTA-Premier Principal in 1982 and he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from West Texas State University in 1991-92. Mr. Gibson was a retired elementary school principal. He began his career in Amarillo at Summitt Elementary and continued at Humphrey's Highland, Whittier, and Ridgecrest elementary schools. After retirement, he continued his commitment to education by involving himself in legislative affairs for the Texas and Amarillo Retired Teachers Associations. He was also involved in many church and civic clubs and organizations. Mr. Gibson received the AISD Superintendent's Award in 1996-97, Amarillo Senior Citizens Association - Outstanding Citizen in 2001, Outstanding Principal Texas PTA in 1982, Twenty-first Century Teacher Award for Promoting Better Public Relations by the Amarillo Retired Teachers Association in April, 2002, Texas Retired Teachers Association - Special Award "for your outstanding leadership and contribution in improving the quality of life for all Texas School Employee Retirees" in April 2002, Award of Special Merit - Texas State Teachers Association, Grand Prix Award for Organizing Contributions and/or service to Texas Retired Teacher's Association. He received the "Outstanding Service on Our 50th Anniversary" award from the Amarillo Retired Teachers Association in March 2004. He was an elder and the Sunday School superintendent for the junior department at First Presbyterian Church for many years. Mr. Gibson was a life member of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. Survivors include his wife; two children, Gail Stewart and Gloria Jones; two sons-in-law Bill Stewart and Stephen Jones; grandchildren, Melissa Davis and husband, Chuck, Jennifer Humphrey and husband, Kevin, Kelsey Moore, Jason Stewart, Christie Watkins and husband, Billy, Shane Stewart and wife, Jennifer, Kristina Jones, Corey Jones, and Marci Jones-Gall and husband, Lonnie; a sister, Alma Long; his great-grandchildren, Kent and Rebecca Morris, Hannah, Joseph and John David Humphrey, Jordan and Jackie Watkins and Sydney Stewart. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Estelline with the Rev. Danny Kirk of Fort Worth officiating. Burial will be in Estelline Cemetery in Estelline by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Brown was born Feb. 18, 1932, in Tyler. He was well known for his barbeque and his garden produce. Survivors include his wife, Judy; three sons, Andrew Jackson Brown of San Antonio, James Ray Brown of Childress and Johnny Mack Brown of Plainview; a stepson, Andre Ingram of Memphis; seven daughters, Ruby Yarbrough of Memphis, Ruby Baldwin of Amarillo, Mary Brown, Dorothy Drew and Wanda Brown, all of Childress, Frances Brown of Burkburnett and Lorene Trimble of Arkansas; four sisters; two brothers; 40 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Bell officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Blurton was born March 7, 1918, in Crawford, Okla. He married Winifred Morris on Nov. 21, 1941, in Gray, Okla. He served with the 4th infantry in combat on Attu Island, Alaska. After returning from military service in 1945, he was employed by Ochiltree County maintaining county roads. He worked for Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America at Gray, Okla. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wheatheart Shriners and Ochiltree County Senior Citizens Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Lula Blurton; a sister; and a brother. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Beverly Merchant of Irving, Barbara Vance and Verna Blurton, both of Dallas, and Wanda Street of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Tracie Merchant, Lexye Street and Samuel Street; and three sisters, Ruby Klein of Monroe City, Mo., Arlee Githens of Perryton and Gean Barnett of Phoenix. She was a longtime resident of Childress before moving to Rockport in 1998. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers at Claude. Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 23, 1912, in Webster to Elmer and Erin Srygley. She had worked for all the grocery stores in Claude as a clerk before retiring. She was an avid Claude Mustang fan and loved the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Claude. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Moore; two sons, James Elmer Moore and Jack Edward Moore; and three daughters, Willie Erin Moore, Oleta Cherry and Latrice Walker Scott. Survivors include a daughter, Zoe Byard of Princeton; a brother, Ralph Srygley of Borger; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. He worked as a route sales manager for Frito Lay, retiring in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Pam; his mother, Juanita Carden of Guymon; four daughters, Cindy Carden of Oklahoma City, Tiffany Ralstin and Michelle Williamson, both of Guymon, and Christy Rogers of Attica, Kan.; a brother, Tom Carden of Guymon; and four grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Childress. His ashes will be scattered around the windmill at the family farm in Childress. Arrangements are by FuneralCaring USA. Mr. Hamilton graduated from Childress High School in 1961 and West Texas State University in 1970. He met and married his wife of almost 26 years, Julie Zandbergs, in 1978. Survivors include his mother, Mary Ruth Hamilton of Childress; his wife of Kerrville; a daughter, Stephanie Byers of Buda; and three grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, April 30, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forest Wayne Strimple TEMPLE - Forest Wayne Strimple, 85, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, in Friendswood. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Scanio-Harper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Parker officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Strimple was born in Collinsville, Okla., on June 3, 1918, and grew up in Amarillo. He served in the Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He married Evelyn Boren from Amarillo in 1940, and they were married more than 63 years. They moved to Temple in 1947, where he was assistant manager at Temple Hardware for 21 years. After retirement he took vocational training in electronics and worked as an electronics technician for eight years. He and Evelyn especially enjoyed world travel with family and friends. Religion was an important part of his life. He was a longtime member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a member of the choir. Other activities included membership in a male quartet and the Community Chorus. In October 2003 he and his wife moved to Houston to be near their son. He will be missed by many, but not forgotten. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Cora Strimple; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry and wife, Diane, of Alvin; a daughter, Lynda Simmons and husband, George, of Reno, Nev.; a grandson; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Lila Strimple of Amarillo; several nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.
