Smith James Phillip "J.P." Smith, 88, of Amarillo, former longtime resident of Fritch, died Sunday, May 16, 2004. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in 1915 in a half-dugout on Buck Creek near Wellington. He was a member of Southwest Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include a nephew, Jerry Don Smith of Amarillo and the children of High Plains Children's Home. Georgia St. Mrs. Higgins was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Amarillo to Maureen and Felix Phillips. She lived in Amarillo her entire life. She attended Amarillo College and Texas Tech University. She was formerly employed by the Rosenwald Advertising Agency, Panhandle Insurance Agency and the Wolfram Law Firm and worked as a secretary for 15 years at Children's Protective Services before retiring. She then was the coordinator for the Young at Heart Program, sponsored by Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). This involved recruiting and training seniors to volunteer in day care centers in Amarillo. She also volunteered as a reading tutor in the Amarillo Independent School District's Help One Student to Succeed (HOSTS) program for several years. She also had volunteered her secretarial skills at Family Outreach of Amarillo, Crown of Texas Hospice and BSA Hospice. She was a former member of the Junior League of Amarillo, where she served from 1951 until 1995. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tommie Phillips; and a granddaughter, Holli Amber Higgins. Survivors include two sons, Joe Dan Higgins and Mike Higgins, both of Amarillo; her beloved grandson, Travis and special friend, Susan Higgins; her grandchildren, Shaun, Matthew and Andrew; special caregivers, Mari and Terry Box; and many dear friends and colleagues. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Shamrock Cemetery with the Rev. Dewayne Beaty, associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Longview, officiating. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dewayne Beaty officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Directors. Mrs. Beaty was born Nov. 16, 1912, near Adell in Wilbarger County, the first child of A.L. and Cretia Sammons McCray. She passed away May 15, 2004, in Haskell. She went to school at Center in the Twitty Community until high school. She moved to Shamrock to board with a family until she graduated from Shamrock High School in 1931. She trusted Jesus in the late 20s and was baptized in Cole Creek south of Shamrock. She met George Beaty at a church Christmas party at Twitty and they married Dec. 10, 1933, in Gageby. They lived on the farm at Twitty until 1938 when they moved to Shamrock. They had two children, Dewayne of Longview and Donna of Haskell. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Shamrock since 1938. She was a member of Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge and WMU of First Baptist Church. She taught beginner or 4- and 5-year-old Sunday school class at First Baptist for many years. She went to work in the Shamrock School cafeteria in 1950. She was to only work one day for a lady that was sick, although she retired there in 1978 after working for 27 years. She was supervisor for many years. When her health began to fail, she moved to Haskell to be near her family. She loved Shamrock and spoke often of coming back one day. She missed her friends so much, although she kept the people in Haskell entertained with delightful stories of days gone by. She was cared for lovingly by caregivers, Ruth Jimenez, Eloisa Soto and Mary Mendoza. She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 24, 1983, just before their 50th wedding anniversary; her parents; a brother, Wiley McCray; a sister, Ada M. Braxton; and a grandson, Adam Lee Cole. Survivors include a son, Dewayne Beaty and wife, Claudia, of Longview; a daughter, Donna Cole and husband, Ford, of Haskell; four grandchildren, D'Anna Beaty of Longview, David and Rosie Beaty of Waco; Kerre and Jason Starch of Bryan and Loren Cole of Abilene; a sister, Betty Baird of Goodnight; numerous cousins; and a great host of friends. Burial will be in Dozier Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors of Shamrock. Mr. Kincannon was born Jan. 14, 1912, in Olustee, Okla., to David and Lela Drury Kincannon. He was a farmer and rancher in the Abra Community. Survivors include four sons, Calvin Kincannon of Mobeetie, Richard Kincannon of Shamrock, Billy Kincannon of Dozier and Horace Kincannon of Atoka, Okla.; four daughters, Charlotte Fullbright of Mesquite, Tonya Kincannon of Hendricks, Okla., Sally Seymour of McLean and Betty Lee of Shamrock; a sister, Etta Breeding of Wellington; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, May 17, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ted Slavin HIGGINS - Ted Slavin, 84, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, in Canadian. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery in Canadian with the Rev. Rick Floyd, pastor of First Baptist Church in Arnett, Okla., and Randy Thompson, of Canadian, officiating. Arrangements are by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Slavin was born Sept. 24, 1919, at Old Ochiltree to Raymond Arthur and Mary Pauline Buckley Slavin. He attended country schools in that area and graduated from Perryton High School in 1938. Upon graduation he attended Texas Tech University until he joined the Army. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Perryton and helped on the family farm. On May 6, 1944, he was united in marriage to Marilee Tepe in Pampa. To this union was born three children, Dona Dee, Jim Ted and Benny Bob. Ted and Marilee were married for 60 years and nine days. He spent his adult life trucking, farming, ranching and making friends. He owned and operated Slavin Livestock Transportation for 52 years. He was forced into retirement in 1993 due to failing health and had suffered declining health since that time. He was a longtime member of Higgins Masonic Lodge No. 820 and Higgins American Legion Post 509. He was a very loving husband and father. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and especially took great pride helping and watching them ride horses and rodeo. His consuming love and close relationship with them brought him a great amount of joy and contentment during his later years. He was preceded in death by his father and a younger brother, Don Buckley Slavin, on Oct. 21, 1933, due to an automobile accident; his mother on Oct. 3, 1992; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Buckley; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Dona Folks and husband, Jim, of Arnett; two sons, Jim Slavin and wife, Mary, of Miami and Bob Slavin and wife, Mavonteine, of Higgins; a sister, Arline Hext of Canadian; a niece, Sue Bartlett of Canadian; a nephew, Bill Hext of Canadian; seven grandchildren, Wade Folks, Stacy Roberts, Jamie Landers, Rowdy Slavin, Rusty Slavin, Roper Slavin and Rae Lynn Gibbs; and seven great-grandchildren. Huddleston, 63, died Saturday, May 15, 2004. Graveside services at 3 p.m. Tuesday in IOOF Cemetery in Abilene. Arrangements are by Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home of Colleyville. Mr. Huddleston was born Oct. 22, 1940, in Abilene to J.M. and Lucretia Akens Huddleston. He married Frances Jones in June 1962 in Lockney. He was a member of Bridgewood Church of Christ and a faithful Christian. He was an ordained minister and filled preaching appointments whenever asked as he loved the Lord's work and his extended church family. He grew up on the campus of Abilene Christian, grade school to college. He worked for several radio stations as a news broadcaster in Plainview, Abilene, Beaumont and Austin. He served as media director for the Texas House of Representatives and did correspondent work for TV 10 in Amarillo, TV 11 in Lubbock, Lubbock Avalanche Journal and Amarillo Globe-News. He used the journalism pen name of Jerry Stone. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Darla Young and husband, Rodney, of Austin, Kimber Taylor of Weatherford and Shawna Larson and husband, Thomas, of Lubbock; his grandchildren, Brynn and Samuel Young, Miles and Emily Taylor and Hunter and Jarod Larson; an uncle, T.I. Akens of Clyde; and his cousins, Ret. U.S. Air Force Capt. Wade H. Meadows Jr. of Abilene, Doug Huddleston of Alabama and numerous other cousins.
