Wesley Daniels, retired minister and brother-in-law of Mrs. McCollough, officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Norma Jim "Jim" Cornett was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Clovis, N.M., the first child of Ernest Cornett and Dora Murphy Cornett. She grew up loving the sound of her father's guitar and the whistle of the trains signaling Ernie's return home from his work as an engineer on the Rock Island Line. Jim grew up during the Great Depression, yet her mother made sure that even during tight times the family had all their needs met and shared with the needy. One of Jim's most cherished memories of her parents was a special gift to her. They scrimped and saved to give her a watch "just like all the other girls." She never forgot the joy in their eyes as they gave it to her, and she carried on that joy in giving throughout her life. She graduated from high school in Herington, Kan., and from Durham's Business School in Hutchison, Kan. Following graduation, she was offered the opportunity to begin her career with a job in Panhandle. She excitedly accepted and embarked on the adventure that would define the rest of her life. In Panhandle, she met the love of her life, J.C. McCollough, and they were married on Dec. 21, 1940. Over the next 64 years Jim led a full life, enriched by an adoring husband, a large and lively family and many wonderful friends. Jim and J.C. were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She and her husband owned and operated Carson County Abstract Company in Panhandle, Pioneer-Lawyers Land Title Services of Stinnett and Fritch Insurance Agency. They provided real estate brokerage services, abstract and title insurance, and general life and casualty insurance in Carson and Hutchinson Counties. Jim was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle. As a member for more than 60 years, she served on the administrative board, the building committee, headed up the high school youth program, sang in the choir and taught the adult Sunday school class for 40 years. She was also an active member of the Altrurian Club in Panhandle and a supporter of the fund raising efforts of the Lions Club. Jim's many friends recall her generous heart, her warm sense of humor and unwavering devotion to family, friends and community. Her family will forever remember Jim's lovely smile, her strength of character, her feisty love of family and friends and her genuinely good heart. She will be deeply missed. The family wishes to express a debt of gratitude to Tony Castillo, who for the past year provided Jim with daily nurturing and unfailing kindness. Tony showed us the miracle of unconditional love. Another great blessing has been Hospice Austin, whose wonderful and supportive staff gave Jim and her family guidance, compassion and the hope to make each day count. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Ralph Cornett. Survivors include four children, Randa Nowotny and husband, Doug, of Lake Jackson, Gail McCollough of Austin, Parker McCollough and wife, Rhonda, of Austin, and Kay Milligan and husband, Terry, of Georgetown; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Hospice Austin or the Scholarship Memorial of the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle.
