Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward, Okla. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Alice Caroline Stafford married John Floyd Main on May 25, 1938, at Waynoka, Okla. She attended Southlawn Assembly of God Church. Survivors include a son, Windell Main of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Virginia Bell of Denton and Glenda Wallace of Amarillo; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, June 27, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leon Craft Leon Craft, 85, of Amarillo died Friday, June 25, 2004. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Miami Cemetery in Miami with Frank Chambers officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Craft was born in Jacksboro on April 16, 1919, to Ernest Rowe Craft and Annie "Reba" Stockard Craft. He attended school in several different Texas locations before moving to Amarillo in January of 1936 to finish at Amarillo High School. He met Allene Black from Miami in 1936, and they were married in Arnett, Okla., on Nov. 25, 1937. He started to work for Dalby Motor Freight in 1936 and worked in the motor freight business until October of 1955. He then worked for Fluor Corporation until his retirement in 1983. While with Fluor, he worked in 23 different locations, including overseas locations in Kuwait, Puerto Rico, South Africa and New Zealand. He was a member of the Methodist church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rites Bodies and Khiva Temple. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 27, 1995. Survivors include a son DuWayne Craft of Yucaipa, Calif.; three sisters, Verda Coker of Amarillo and Maxie Page and Beverly Parks, both of Fort Stockton; a brother, Donald Craft of Lubbock; a grandson, Kim Wayne Craft of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; four great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; and his dear companion, Inez Shirley of Amarillo. Mrs. Shemwell was born to David L. and Mary A. Hall on Sept. 19, 1906. She attended Second Baptist Church where she was a nursery attendant for 25 years. She married Benjamin F. Shemwell on Sept. 18, 1933. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her unconditional love, generosity and sweet smile. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Peggy Parker; four sisters; and seven brothers. He graduated from Memphis High School and received his bachelor's degree from West Texas State University. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. He married Mildred Hefley in 1951 in Amarillo. He was a credit manager and retired from Nunn Electric. He was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Walter Hill in 1982. Mr. Sturman was born May 21, 1922, in Elida, N.M., to John Floyd and Ruby Bell Sturman. He married Wanda Haislip on Dec. 24, 1950, in Portales, N.M. They moved to Tulia in 1951, where they owned and operated J-Gee Department Store for 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Tulia Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and the Swisher County Industrial Foundation. He was a World War II veteran and received the French Commemorative Medal of the 1939-1945 War for his participation in the French Campaign of 1944. He was preceded in death by his wife on June 3, 2002. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Grace Lutheran Church. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Claude Cemetery in Claude by Moore Funeral Home and Cemetery. Mr. Bennett was born at home on July 20, 1944, in Armstrong County to Ruby and John Bennett, who was a farmer and Armstrong County judge for 12 years. He attended Claude Elementary and graduated from Claude High School. He moved to Oklahoma City to attend Mechanic's Trade School and later worked as a state and federal government meat inspector throughout Texas. Starting in 1981, he went into chemical sales and has owned his own business for the last seven years. Nathan met Nancy Willis on a blind date at Texas Tech when he called her roommate and accidentally got Nancy. They married in 1976, 28 years ago. Nathan was a devoted family man! He loved his wife and children! He was active in any organization that involved his kids, especially Boy Scouts (assisting his son to achieve the Eagle Scout Award in 2002), Girl Scouts (assisting Natalie to achieve the Gold Award in 2004) and Lamar High School Band, where he was an active Booster Club member. Nathan volunteered more than 2000 hours during the last four years for Lamar High School in Arlington. Nathan was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Arlington. He also had many friends who will miss his humor and his friendship! Amarillo Globe-New, June 27, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon George Henry Ritter George Henry Ritter, 87, of Canyon died Thursday, June 24, 2004, in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Dreamland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon, 1702 5th Ave. Mr. Ritter was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Kansas City, Mo., to William and Alta Mae Ritter. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1934. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University at Arkansas at Fayetteville. He did doctoral work at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He married Alice Loue Leonard in Joplin, Mo., on Jan. 31, 1941. He was associate professor of political science at West Texas State University from 1957 to 1982. He was instrumental in starting baseball on the collegiate level at WTSU, where he was the first coach. He was elected professor emeritus at WTSU in 1994. He was very active in the community. He served eight years on the Canyon City Commission. He was a charter member of the Canyon Noon Kiwanis Club, where he was a member from 1957 to 2004. He was chairman of the Panhandle Action Board, a former chairman of the Canyon City Park Board, a member of the Canyon Planning and Zoning Board, Canyon's Man of the Year in 1969, a two-time Kiwanian of the Year and helped establish and manage the T-Anchor Apartments for low income families from 1980 to 1998. He was instrumental in the development of Southeast Park Baseball and Softball Fields and also started the Canyon city manager accreditation program. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Lou Hand and husband, Bob, of Canyon; a son, William David Ritter and wife, Joyce, of Canyon; a brother, Dawson William Defelt, D.O. Surgeon; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Scott Hand of St. Paul, Minn., Misty Michele Miller and husband, Will, of Amarillo, Timothy Shane Ritter of Canyon and Jeremy Sean Ritter and wife, Amanda, of Tucson, Ariz.
