Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Cornerstone Baptist Church with Coy Wylie, pastor, and Dale Travis, pastor of Family Life Fellowship, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Laster married Trina Williams on Dec. 7, 1996, in Las Vegas. Ken was a longtime Amarillo funeral director, retiring in March of this year. He was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where he was involved in the children's ministry and the church's softball league. He was a basketball referee, coached basketball and softball for Kids Inc., as well as coaching in his son's league. He also loved fishing. Survivors include his wife; a son, Brayden of Amarillo; and a daughter, Camille Baldwin of Fort Myers, Fla. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Charles Meyer, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, officiating. A second service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa with the Rev. Bill Snooks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Knippa Cemetery. Mr. Balzen was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Knippa. Al retired from the Texas Highway Department, where he was manager of the storehouse. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Mills. Survivors include a brother, Richard Balzen of Kerrville; two nephews, Rick Balzen and Jason Balzen; two nieces, Ann DeGrassi and Sandi Eudey; 12 great- nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joy Northern of Amarillo. Mrs. Brown was born in Guymon, Okla., on March 8, 1964. She graduated from Perkins High School in 1982. She then attended Bible Baptist College for three years and graduated from Amarillo College with a degree in nursing. She worked as a nurse. She was a member of Southwest Baptist Church. She married Terry Brown on Dec. 31, 1983, in Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Timothy Brown and Robert Brown, both of Amarillo; a daughter, Heather Brown of Amarillo; a sister, Pam Rhodes of Oklahoma City; her parents, Bobby and Patsy Rhodes of Perkins, Okla.; and her grandmother. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Kizer was born June 11, 1911, in Hugo, Okla., to Willard and Maudie Mae Kizer. He worked as a foreman for Asarco from 1942 to 1967. After retiring, he worked for Dunlap's department store for more than 20 years. He was a member of Anna Street Church of Christ. He married Daisy Elizabeth Kizer on Dec. 27, 1931, in Hugo, Okla. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998. He was retired from Texas Highway Department, where he was an assistant foreman for 30 years. Amarillo Globe-News, July 28, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles Floyd "Choc" Smith PANHANDLE - Charles Floyd "Choc" Smith, 84, died Monday, July 26, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Christian Church in Panhandle with the Rev. Doug Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Sullivan Funeral Home of Vernon. Mr. Smith was born July 9, 1920, to the late Bert and Ala Janie Herrington Smith in Arkansas City. In 1939, Choc graduated from Panhandle High School, where he was captain of the 1937 (undefeated) and 1938 Regional Championship Panthers. He participated in Golden Gloves and played freshman football at Texas Christian University before transferring to West Texas State College. On Aug. 10, 1942, he married Jo Beth Hughes. When World War II broke out, he left college to proudly serve in the Navy Air Corps for three and a half years. Upon his return he became an active member of VFW Post 6972, serving two years as post commander and a year as district commander. He had placed flags on the graves of Panhandle servicemen each Memorial Day since the end of World War II, and had taught and been assisted by his sons and grandsons. His other community service included nine years on the Panhandle ISD school board, including a year as president. He was a city councilman for six years, four of which were served as mayor. He was chosen Citizen of the Year in 1980. He was lifelong member of First Christian Church of Panhandle and served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent. He contributed regularly to his church, but also to Methodist Youth Fellowship, Calvary Baptist Youth Group, Catholic Children's Home, Church of Christ Youth and Carson County Junior Livestock Show. Choc organized Lee and Smith Butane Co. with Loyd Lee in December 1945. In 1947, with partner Glen Downs, he formed Panhandle Butane Co. In 1954, he purchased the Phillips 66 fuel jobbership and in 1956 added fertilizer to the company services. In 1970, he became sole owner until his son Mark Smith joined the company. He also was elected and served 12 years as Carson County Commissioner. His family cannot remember a time when a family holiday dinner was not accompanied by the delivery of a meal to some friend or relative. Choc was a self-appointed meal service in Panhandle. He had been an example of a generous and compassionate Christian; a wise and loving husband and father; and a kind and caring friend. We will miss his wit and wisdom. Bless your heart, Choc. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ed Smith; and a daughter, Lynda Smith Keller. Survivors include his wife; an aunt, Gladys Stoelzle of Buena Vista, Colo.; a sister, Naomi Stickler of Albuquerque, N.M.; three children, Mike Smith and wife, Carol, of Amarillo, Sandra O'Connor of Houston and Mark Smith and wife, Lynette, of Panhandle; seven grandchildren, Shane Keller, Spencer Smith and Toby O'Connor, all of Dallas, McKenna Thomason and husband, Gary, of Amarillo, Corey O'Connor of St. Louis, Blake Smith and wife, Jennifer, of Houston and Tyler Smith of Panhandle; a great-grandchild, Charles Vance "Choc" Thomason of Amarillo; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
