Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Trinity Fellowship Church in Amarillo with Bo Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon and Happy, 1702 Fifth Ave. Mrs. Wells, 40, began a celebration with Jesus in Heaven on Aug. 19, 2004. Jatawn was born in Amarillo to Archie and Judy Scribner on July 28, 1964. She attended elementary school in Euless and later moved to Dumas where she graduated high school in 1982. After graduating high school, Jatawn attended Texas A&M University for one semester and then transferred to San Angelo State University and McMurry University. She graduated from West Texas A&M University in 1986 with a degree in education. Jatawn taught fifth grade for two years in Andrews, then moved to Canyon in 1991, where she taught in the Canyon Independent School District for 10 years. Throughout her teaching career, Jatawn was known for her influential teaching style and her ability to make the classroom a place of contagious warmth. Jatawn was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, and the 12-year battle that followed began a ministry that touched many lives. Jatawn once said, "God has given me an adventure," and she faced that adventure head on and trusted Jesus all the way. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Canyon for eight years, where she and her husband participated in couples ministry and the contemporary worship committee. Jatawn was a Stephen minister and often taught Sunday school. Jatawn and her family become members of Trinity Fellowship Church in Amarillo in 2000. She became a life group leader and student of the School of Ministry. Through church, Bible studies and as a lay leader for the Walk to Emmaus, the Lord used her cancer to minister to women throughout Amarillo, Canyon and the Texas Panhandle. Jatawn gave meaning to the verse Psalm 105:4, "Seek the Lord and His strength. Seek His face forever more." Jatawn's love for the Lord grew through her struggles with cancer, and she was truly a lady of grace filled with faith. Anyone who looked at Jatawn could immediately see the light in her eyes and the smile that would brighten a room. She loved talking on the phone, praise songs, Diet Coke and the color pink - she made others comfortable, was easy to talk to and showered those around her with the love that encompassed her heart. Spunky, beautiful, spirited, insightful, loving - all words that would describe an amazing person - all words that describe the life of Jatawn Wells. This remarkable daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend lived for Isaiah 61:1-3 and was, is and always will be an oak of righteousness. We call her faithful. Willie G. "Billy" Hobbs died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Alamo CityChristian Fellowship of San Antonio. Local services will be at noon Saturday in San Jacinton Christian Academy, Sixth Avenue and Carolina Street, Amarillo. Arrangements are by Porter Loring Mortuaries of San Antonio. Rev. Hobbs was born Sept. 18, 1946, in Mount Pleasant, the youngest of four children. He would go on to a stellar athletic career and eventually and gloriously became a shining star for his Christian faith. After excelling in athletics at Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Billy became a two-time All-American linebacker at Texas A&M, '67 SWC player of the year, Cotton Bowl MVP and national Defensive Player of the Year. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, he played seven years professionally, ending his career with the San Antonio Wings. He was inducted into the Texas A&M and Panhandle Sports Halls of Fame. Despite all his athletic honors, the passion and legacy of this incredible man was his relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom he came to know in 1979. This relationship led him through a Christian ministry that started in Amarillo and progressed to the villages and backstreets of Africa, India and Brazil. After working several years as a minister at Amarillo's San Jacinto Baptist, Billy moved to San Antonio with his close friend and brother in Christ, Dr. David Walker. There Billy served as an evangelist for Alamo City Christian Fellowship. He fell in love with Kristi Tschirhart, who joined him in marriage and his Christian mission in 1989. Billy and Kristi later returned to Amarillo where they served the Lord at the Faith City Mission and touched innumerable hearts and lives. Their Christian journey led them back to San Antonio and Alamo City Christian Fellowship for the past few years, where Billy and Kristi continued their great calling. In their prison ministry, as well as their work with high school, college and professional athletes, Billy inspired people with his message that "Nobody's too tough for Jesus!" Billy had a special love for children, for the homeless, the hungry, and all the downtrodden. As Billy would often say, "the least, the last and the lost." He touched them all, and us, with his crystal-blue eyes and mile-wide smile. He was a warrior for his Christ. He was a man that, though his honors were many, wanted only for his name to be called in Heaven, to be in God's Hall of Fame. He is there now, and we rejoice in his glory. Billy was preceded in death by his father, Ottis Hobbs, and his sister, Sharron Hisey. Survivors include his wife; his mother, Junie Hobbs; two brothers, Gary Hobbs and wife, Sandy, and Joe Hobbs and wife, Lola; a brother-in-law, Bill Hisey and wife, Betty; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dr. Gil and Shirlie Kaats; his father-in-law, Leonard Tschirhart, and wife, Elizabeth; his grandmother-in-law, Kathryn Grant, wife of the late Lee Grant; his in-laws, Gary Tschirhart and wife, Tricia, Mike Tschirhart and wife, Becky, Patti Keith and husband, Sam, Jeff Tschirhart and wife, Lisa, Lori Dawson and husband, Gene, Julie Marshall and husband, Roger, and Pam Tschirhart; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Toews was born to German Mennonite parents, Gerhard Peter and Helena Radowski Harder, on July 18, 1914, near Corn, Okla. Her early childhood and youth were spent on the family farm near Corn. She was the 10th of 11 children. Her family in 1911 emigrated to the United States from Welikoknjascheskoje German Mennonite Colony, Caucasus, Kuban (now the Ukraine, former Soviet Union). She married Walter H. Toews in 1936. They made their home in Borger and were founding members of the First Christian Church. Ruby was active in women's Bible study groups and served as Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. Ruby was noted for her great sense of humor, love of hard work and compassion and empathy for the ill and animals of all kinds. She loved a good funeral and often attended those of people she did not know well for fear that the service would not be well attended. She was also often heard to say, "Give me a good dog story." In later years she proudly reflected on her youth on the family farm and the fact that she was the fastest picker in the family when it came time to harvest the cotton crop. She had ambitions as a girl to follow in her mother's footsteps as a practical nurse, midwife and perhaps even a doctor. The Depression and lack of money stopped those dreams. But she found many avenues for healing, starting with her pet cats and farm animals and culminating late in life to nursing a sister who suffered from asthma and a brother who died from complications of colon cancer. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Arthur, John, Selma, Theodore, Olga, Alexander, Walter, Nikolei, Jacob and Leona.
