Aderton Jr. Ellis H. Aderton Jr., 80, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Llano Cemetery with Kurt Oheim of Pinnacle Community Church officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Aderton was born in Casper, Wyo. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Frances V. "Peggy" Houck in 1947. Mr. Aderton received his bachelor of science degree in agriculture from West Texas State University at Canyon in 1949. He entered Santa Fe Service in the engineering department at Amarillo on Sept. 8, 1952, and held various positions in that department until his transfer on July 1, 1970, to the agricultural development department as assistant to the manager. He held the Honorary State Farmer Degree from the New Mexico FFA and was a member of the American Railway Development Association and Professional Agricultural Workers of Texas. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wayne Aderton and wife, Ruth, and Jerry Aderton and wife, Ivis, all of Amarillo; and four grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. Georgia St. Mr. Cotten was born Oct. 25, 1936, in Jester, Okla. He was a hardworking, decent man whose life was guided by his strong faith in God. Bobby grew up in the small farming community of Plainview, Okla., graduating from high school there in 1955. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Bennington. In 1959, he married Darlene Dennis in Pampa. He retired in October, 2000 after spending 41 years with the same company. His hobbies were fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. Bobby was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church of Amarillo. His family eagerly awaits a reunion with him on the resurrection day. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Bryan Euvene in 1961. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Howry was born in Oklahoma City to Emmett and Alta Howry and was raised in Amarillo. He was a Comanche Indian and was very proud of his heritage. He attended Palo Duro High School as well as Amarillo College and was a veteran of the Navy. He married Nelda Taylor in 1976 in Amarillo. He had worked for Pantex for more than 25 years. Mr. Howry was a member of Oakdale Grace Fellowship Church, where he served as director of men's fellowship. He was very devoted in his faith and ministered through his involvement with Hard Core Christian Motorcycle Ministry, the Bill Glass Prison Ministry, as well as Kairos Prison Ministry. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1996; and a son, Toby Taylor in 1996. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Funeral Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with the Rev. Clifton Mann, rector of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Simmons was born in Amarillo on July 2, 1919, to Elton and Hattie Black Simmons. He married Opal Wheeler in 1943. He retired from the Navy, where he served in World War II and received the Purple Heart at the Battle of the Coral Sea. He was employed by Pantex as an inspector, until he retired a second time. He was the owner and operator of Simac's Restaurant in the early 1960s. He was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shrine. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He had been a lay reader at St. Bartholomew's Church in Corpus Christi. He was preceded in death by his wife in June, 2003; and his parents. Survivors include a son, Hillard Simmons and wife, Suzie, of Sour Lake; a daughter, Sharon Caudill and husband, J.R., of Lovington, N.M.; a brother, James O. Miss Johnson was a longtime Amarillo resident and music educator. She moved to Amarillo in 1916 and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1928. She began piano studies at 12 and completed training at the American Conservatory of Chicago and graduate study at the Cincinnati Conservatory. She and Gladys Glenn owned the Musical Arts Conservatory in Amarillo. She taught between 500 to 1,000 students during her career. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C., on Jan. 30, 2000; and by her first husband, Walter T. Peterson, in 1951. He loved to go fishing in the mountains. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on July 3, 2001; a great- granddaughter; and two brothers. Private services will be held by the family at a later date. Arrangements are by Bailey-Ware Funeral Home in McLean. Mr. Fish was born Aug. 20, 1953, in Pampa. He moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and while there, earned his master of arts degree in history. He also began a career dedicated to serving others, working for Sen. Alan Cranston's office and ADEPT, an organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities in finding housing and employment. Joe returned to the Texas Panhandle in 1984. He lived and worked in McLean, where he served for three years as editor of the McLean News. He then moved to Amarillo, where for several years, he served as executive director of PACILS (the Panhandle Action Center for Independent Living Skills), another organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities. Many residents of Amarillo and the surrounding area still enjoy the results of Joe's lifetime of service, as Joe was responsible for writing grants to secure monies for Amarillo's public transportation system and KFDA's close-captioning system. He was preceded in death by his father, Sanford Cletis Fish. Survivors include his mother, Jeanette Fish of Alanreed; a sister, Lynn Swanson and husband, Larry, of McLean; a brother, Dan Fish and wife, Sasha, of Alanreed; three nephews and two nieces, Tony and Amy Polito, both of Clarendon, Ryan Swanson of Amarillo and Taylor Fish and Parker Fish, both of Alanreed; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 12, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- VET Delmer Maurice Miller: 1914-2004 Delmer Maurice Miller DALHART - Delmer Maurice Miller, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Germantown, Tenn. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Central United Methodist Church with Jeff Taylor, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Miller was born May 13, 1914, in Numa, Iowa, to Stanley and Evelyn Stanton Miller. On March 27, 1937, he married Shirley Davis. Uncle Sam called and between 1940 to 1945, he trained in the Army Air Corps, which rated him as the wing commander and director of flying. In September 1945, he founded Plains Aero Service in Amarillo. If not the first, he was one of the earliest commercial appliers of 2-4D by air. This was the beginning of a legacy. Delmer's operation moved to Dalhart in 1956. Delmer's hobbies included rebuilding Model Ts. He built his first Model T in 1928 and after he retired from flying in 1991, he devoted most of his time to rebuilding or restoring Model Ts. He was XIT parade marshal for the 2003 parade. Mr. Miller was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sally Elizabeth Miller; and two sons, Stanley Wayne Miller and Maurice Delmer Miller; Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Melinda Olson and husband, Rusty, of Germantown; a daughter-in-law, Lee Miller of Ardmore. Mrs. Vanderburg was born in Dalhart on Jan. 9, 1920. She was the daughter of Jack and Flora Collins, a pioneer Hartley County family and founders of Sunray. She attended Channing and Pampa schools and Texas Tech. She had lived in Spearman since 1940. She met Everett Vanderburg at Texas Tech. They were married on Sept. 2, 1939, in Channing and enjoyed 57 years together. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she taught nursery children as well as adult Sunday school. She was especially proud of her three sets of twin grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996. Mr. Barquist was born Nov. 10, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Jack R. Barquist and Bette J. Mahie Barquist. He had been a resident of Clayton since 1998. Survivors include his wife, Rita J. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 12, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere VET Dr. Jim Howard HEIDELBURG, Germany - Dr. Jim Howard, Lt. Col. U.S. Army, 48, formerly of Amarillo, Texas, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. Services will be Friday in Arlington National Cemetery. Dr. Howard was the son of Ruby and the late Gib Howard. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1974. While there, Jim played bass for the Freedom Singers and played on the Rebel baseball team. For several years, he delivered the Amarillo Globe-News. Dr. Howard attended Midwest Christian College, Pacific Christian College and graduated magna cum laude from Lincoln Christian College in Lincoln, Ill. While in seminary at Lincoln, Jim went on a short-term medical missions trip to Haiti that would change the direction of his life and career. Seeing the impact that medical professionals can have on people's lives, he dropped his ministerial studies just one year shy of a M.Div. degree and returned to Amarillo to begin preparing for application to medical school. Jim would certify as an EMT and then as a paramedic until passing the MCAT exam and enrolling at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas. After his first year in medical school, Jim went into the Army. Upon graduation, Dr. Howard would serve at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas (where he met his wife, Andreina, then a nursing student) and complete his residency in family practice at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. Following this, he would serve as the director of the family clinic in Darmstadt, Germany, and would be deployed with U.S. Army forces in Albania during the Eastern European conflict. At the time of his death, he was on staff at the U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelburg. Jim received numerous citations, including the Medal for Meritorious Service. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home in Houston with the Rev. Dowen Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Earthman Resthaven Cemetery in Houston. Survivors include his loving wife, Janice; a daughter, Shanon Hutto of Kingwood; a son Linden Brightwell of Spring; three grandchildren, Jordon, Cameron and Brandon Hutto; and a brother, James Brightwell of Georgia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Friends are invited to a family reception at the funeral home immediately following the services Monday.
