Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Llano Cemetery with Jim Shelburne of Washington Avenue Christian Church and Dale Travis of Family Life Fellowship officiating. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Massie was born May 14, 1925, in Pembroke, Ky., to William J. and Ruth Massie. He was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge he attended West Texas University and graduated with a degree in engineering. He retired as safety manager in 1987 from J.M. Huber Corp. in Borger. After his retirement from J.M. Huber he worked for Barnes Jewelry, retiring from there in 2003. Fulfilling his desire to help others, he served as a volunteer at Harrington Cancer Center and BSA Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Betty; a daughter, Jayne Fredrickson and husband, Phil, of Houston; a son, Mark and wife, Paula, of Coos Bay, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Diane Lewis and husband, Richard, of Amarillo; a stepson, Stephen Campbell and wife, Lisa, of Dallas; a brother, Herbert Massie and wife, Francis, of Flossmoor, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 16, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Veda Hazel Crawley Veda Hazel Crawley, 81, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Mrs. Crawley was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Batesville, Ark. Her family moved to a farm in Gray County when she was 3 years old. She graduated from McLean High School in 1941 and attended business college in Amarillo. During World War II, she served two years in the Women's Army Corps, leaving as corporal. She worked in recruiting and public relations in Columbus, Ohio. Upon returning to Amarillo, she worked eight years for the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad. She spent 23 years as a statistician with the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1983. She married Glen W. Crawley in 1957, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Crawley became a registered parliamentarian in 1973, and was very active in women's clubs in Amarillo and Texas. At various times she served as president of Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Amarillo BPW, Amarillo Garden Club, Hi-Plains Chapter Poetry Society of Texas, The Federated Book Review Club and Women's Veterans of America, Magna Bell Chapter. In 1976, she was awarded the Panhandle Distinguished Service Award by West Texas State University. She was honored as Texas Parliamentarian in 1987. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Dr. Lendon J. Smith and wife, Linda, of Warrensburg, Mo., and Keith L. Crawley and wife, Patti, of Amarillo; and three grandchildren, Trace D. Smith of Dallas, and Jason K. Crawley and Whitney A. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 16, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary Sharp Deal Mary Sharp Deal, 86, of Amarillo died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004. Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Burial was in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Sharp Deal was born to Louise and Benjamin DesMarais on May 22, 1918, in Rutland, Vt. Raised on a dairy farm in upstate New York, she graduated from Sandy Creek High School and pursued studies as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. During World War II, she joined the Army Air Corps after gaining three pounds to meet the minimum weight requirement and nursed servicemen back to health at a hospital in Orlando, Fla. There she met Merle Barrows, a man from eastern New Mexico who would marry her and bring her to Amarillo to live. He worked as a piano tuner and flight instructor while she continued to work as a registered nurse. When he passed away in 1955, she remained in Amarillo with her two small children, sending them to parochial schools while continuing to serve as a registered nurse, mostly with orthopedic surgeons. In 1963, she married H.M. Sharp, who was a musician and car salesman. They were married for 26 years before he passed away in 1989. In 1991, she married Ted Deal, a retired conductor with the Santa Fe Railway. They maintained homes in Amarillo and Waynoka, Okla., until he passed away in 1997. Mrs. Sharp Deal loved well, both people and animals, and was well loved in return. She lived well through service to the medical community and St. Mary's Church and left the world a better place. Our loss is heaven's gain. Since 2002, her son has been honored to live with her in the family home. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Hubbard of Amarillo; and a brother, Harry DesMarais of Pulaski, N.Y. Survivors include a son, James Barrows of Amarillo; a son by marriage, Edward Hubbard of Austin; two sisters, Margaret Littler of Pulaski, N.Y., and Frances Brace of Denver; a brother, Lawrence DesMarais of Pulaski; a granddaughter, Brook McGinnis of Las Vegas; a grandson by marriage, David McGinnis of Las Vegas; a niece, Mary Littler of Adams Center, N.Y.; and two nephews, Michael Littler of Rochester, N.Y., and Ron Brace of Denver. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 16, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Sims Ralph Sims, 85, of Amarillo died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Darren Dye of First Christian Church in Canyon officiating. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Sims was born in Purcell, Okla., to Andrew and Cordelia Sims. He grew up in Chickasha, Okla. He joined the Army in 1936 and worked his way up through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, a 28 year career in which he served in World War II, Korea and helped set up the government of the Philippines. His medals include the Bronze Star. He married Elizabeth Cooper in 1942 and together with their sons, spent the next 22 years living in many different countries including Germany, Austria and Ethiopia. Elizabeth passed from this world in March 1990. After his retirement from the Army in 1964, Mr. Sims owned and operated One Hour Martinizing Dry Cleaners on Southeast 27th in Amarillo, retiring in 1992. Ralph was an avid photographer and won many awards and accolades over the years. An example of his work, a picture of the opening of the Boys Ranch Rodeo, adorned the front cover of the 1995 Amarillo phone book. He also did a lot of photography for the Amarillo Fire Department. He had a great deal of affection for "those boys." Survivors include three sons, John Sims and wife, Kathy, of Amarillo, Paul Sims of Austin and Mark Sims of Dallas; five grandchildren; seven grandchildren; and many friends and bingo buddies. Mr. Archer was born Dec. 16, 1920, in Hutchinson County and was a lifetime resident of Spearman. He married Mary Frances "Peggy" Garrett on Aug. 22, 1939, in Liberal, Kan. He was a farmer, rancher and oil and gas producer. He attended First Baptist Church. He owned and operated Speartex Grain since 1967 and was a director of Texas Grain and Feed Association. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of Spearman Rotary Club for many years and was listed in Who's Who in America. Carl and his wife were 1996 Spearman Citizens of the Year and 2000 Spearman Citizens of the Century. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on Aug. 22, 2004. Carl always gave to every cause or when he saw a person in need. Recently he led a fundraiser to purchase defibrillators for every law enforcement officer in Hansford County. He was a member of the board of directors for the Spearman Scholarship Foundation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Gertie Archer; and four brothers, R.B. Jr., Dan, Oscar and Charles Patten Archer. Mr. Vogler was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Lamesa. He graduated from Hereford High School and married Patricia Perry on Jan. 13, 1961, in Hereford. He was a farmer and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mr. Vogler was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Wing was born Aug. 5, 1933, in Booneville, Mo., to Warner Fray and Marjorie (Thornton) Wing. Raised in Booneville, he married Jo Willoughby on Feb. 8, 1953, in Booneville. In 1981, Larry and his family moved to Dalhart from Hugoton, Kan., where he became manager of Cattleman's Livestock Commission Co. He was a member of First Christian Church, was founder and past president of High Plains Ranchers and Breeders Association, Texas and New Mexico Cattle Feeders Association, was a lifetime member of American Quarter Horse Association, was a member of American Paint Horse Association and BPOE No. 2390 Dalhart Elks. "If a child is involved, Mr. Wing was there to provide help in any way he could." An avid supporter of Texas and New Mexico High School Rodeo Associations, 4-H Programs etc., Larry was known far and wide for his generosity with children and the needy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 16, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere James Noel Nugent GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. - James Noel Nugent, 80, formerly of Amarillo, Texas, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004. Memorial services will be today in Green Valley. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Arrangements are by Green Valley Mortuary. Mr. Nugent was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Ellsworth, Wis., to Leo and Frances Nugent. Mr. Nugent married Evelyn Hope McKinney on Aug. 2, 1947. He was the first chief appraiser for the Potter-Randall Appraisal District after long service as tax assessor-collector for the city of Amarillo. His integrity and good humor in a challenging profession were an inspiration to all. Mr. Nugent served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was active in his parish in Green Valley and St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Vincent and Edward; and a sister, Elaine and her husband, John, whom he considered a brother. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Terry Fenner and husband, Mike; two sons, Jim and wife, Debbie, and Bill and wife, Becky; and two grandchildren, Leslie and Marc. Mr. Logan was born July 5, 1987, the son of Richard and Debbie (Lee) Logan. Tanner will be well remembered for his sense of humor and care for others. He loved and was loved by all.
