Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Wheir was born Sept. 30, 1911, in Wichita, Kan. She and her husband moved to Amarillo in 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Hugh Wheir; a daughter, Ellen Wheir; and and infant son, David Wheir. She attended Panhandle State University and West Texas State College. She taught in the Gruver school system for more than 25 years before retiring. She moved to Dimmitt from Gruver in 1997. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in SouthCare Funeral Home in Marietta. Burial with military honors will be in Georgia Memorial Park. Mr. Nelson was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Havana, Cuba. He was one of three sons of Emily Abele and Samuel Nelson of Liverpool, England. He served with distinction as a pilot in the Army Air Corps (1942-1945) where he flew transport missions and evacuated the wounded in the North African and Italian theaters of war. After the war Mr. Nelson had a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry, working for Chesbrough Ponds, Warner Lambert and Bristol Myers companies, mainly in Latin America. He was previously married to Elizabeth Ames. A new resident of Smyrna, he lived recently in Las Vegas and Amarillo, Texas. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. James Collins, pastor, and the Rev. E.J. Cofer of New Birth Ministries officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Allen was an extraordinary man who possessed promise, revealed a prayer life, demonstrated great faith as well as courage and proclaimed God's vision for family, Mount Zion Baptist Church, the Amarillo International Airport, friends and the Masonic family. These attributes, the annointing of God upon his life and his willingness to surrender for God's perfect will, made him a Christian leader and a legend, who will be long remembered. This man of promise was born into the union of the late Joseph and Willie Allen on Sept. 18, 1924, in Paris. He was the fourth of their five children. He moved to Amarillo with his family in 1930. Doc entered Frederick Douglas Elementary School in 1931 and graduated from Patten High School in 1943. His pursuit of an education was interrupted by a call to serve his country. His tour of duty was in the Navy, where he received an honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Amarillo to begin working for Blackburn Brothers Clothiers. He was also employed by Herring Hotel and Ramada Inn. He began his employment with Amarillo International Airport in 1962, where he was a faithful and dedicated employee until he became ill in August 2004. He married the late Evelyn Lois Robinson on Jan. 2, 1947. She passed on April 4, 2002, after 55 years of marriage. They were parents of five children, four girls and a son. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Zion Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. C.C. Cyphers, where he was a loyal and faithful member for 63 years. He was also a loyal and faithful member of Markwell Lodge No. 415 and Ozair Shrine No. 146 since 1956, serving as potentate in 1961-1962. At the time of his death, he held the office of imperial deputy of The Oasis and was very active in all departments of the Masonic family until his death. She held a B.A. in elementary education from Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colo., and a M.S. degree in library science from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. Mrs. Nelsen, a post-polio parapalegic, was selected as Handicapped Woman of the Year in 1979 by the Kansas-Missouri District of Pilot International. At her retirement from teaching in 1984 in Junction City, Kan., she was recognized for 45 years in education, much of it as a teacher and librarian at Washington Elementary and Eisenhower Elementary in Junction City. Mrs. Nelsen was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Junction City. After her retirement she moved to Amarillo to be with her children, Kris and Craig Staff, and her grandchildren, Myia, Donnie and Martha. She continued to love and teach not only her own three grandchildren but also many "adopted" grandchildren until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; her mother in 1978; her father in 1979; and a brother, Robert E. McVay of Tulsa in 1994. With her family, she moved to Hedley, where she graduated from high school. After her father's death, the family moved to Quanah. She married Jesse Elvis Roberts on Nov. 24, 1928, in Quanah. He died Sept. 30, 1991, in Plainview where the couple moved in 1938. She lived in Plainview until her death. She was a homemaker and enjoyed family history, collecting antiques, travel and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Edith Woodward and Rosezell Sams; and a brother, Carl Bonds. Survivors include a son, J.B. She received an award for LaNelle Poling Day from Congressman Mac Thornberry, and she received the Golden Nail Award for the Panhandle area. Mrs. Poling donated paintings to HOPE for many years and was featured in Accent West. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Merrick and Bobby Merrick. She was a loving grandmother, great-grandmother and caregiver for her husband, Ralph Heiskell, during his illness. She was a member for many years of First Baptist Church of Dalhart. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 24, 1983; her parents, Abe Gunn and Stella Flowers; two sisters, Mildred Shirley and Mattie Pitchett; and a brother, William Vernon Gunn.
