"Sonny" Chaparro W.G. "Sonny" Chaparro, 76, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Chaparro was born in Fort Bayard, N.M., to Jose and Ana Chaparro. He married the love of his life, Aurora Leija, on Feb. 4, 1951, in San Antonio. Mr. Chaparro joined the Army Air Corps in 1945 and served in World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. During that time, he received a commendation medal, National Defense Medal and several Good Conduct Medals. He was discharged in 1968 after 23 years of service. Mr. Chaparro worked for Bell Helicopter for 20 years, where he received a certificate of appreciation. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995; his parents; a brother, Orlando Chaparro; a son, W.G. Chaparro Jr.; a daughter, Maria L. Chaparro; a granddaughter, Andrea M. Kinikin; a grandson, Joshua L. Chaparro; and two sons-in-law, Joe Molina and Victor Kinikin. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores M. Chaparro of Clovis, N.M., and Frances Kinikin of Panhandle; two sons, David Lee Chaparro and wife, Kim, and Daniel Chaparro, all of Amarillo; a brother, Ray Chaparro of Los Angeles; three sisters, Velma Silva and Theresa Chaparro, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nellie Campbell of Arrey, N.M.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Lowe and Joe Jernigan of Calvary Christian Fellowship in Shamrock officiating. Arrangements are by Bailey-Ware Funeral Home of McLean. Mr. Benson was born March 15, 1922, in Wellington to J.R. and Eula Anderson Benson. He graduated from Shamrock High School in 1939. He attended Texas Tech University until he joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a B-17 pilot in the Pacific Theater. In April 1944, he married Lurline Smith. They were married for over 60 years. Mr. Benson was a long-time businessman in Shamrock, having taken over the family business in 1945. His father, J.R. Benson, began the furniture, hardware and implement business in 1923. Lyman later sold carpet and became a real estate broker. Mr. Benson was a charter member and past commander of the American Legion, a charter member of the Shamrock Booster Club, a member of the VFW, and a 50- year member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife of Amarillo; a daughter, Sue Benson Campbell and husband, Jerry, of Amarillo; a son, Gray Benson of Shamrock; a grandson, Grayson Benson of Amarillo; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Pauline Benson of Amarillo.
