Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 15th Avenue and Martin Road. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Hall was born in Oakland, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo for more than 60 years. He was married to Geneva Inez Ashlock for 65 years. He was a devoted husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a longtime member of Comanche Trails Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jenny and Barbara, and two sons-in- law George Utter and Duane Castleberry, all of Amarillo; seven grandchildren, Jeff Utter, Terry Utter, Tina Newkirk, Dorinda Rhodes, Joy Castleberry, Ray Jackson and Radawna Jackson; and 21 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 25, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aubyn Earl Hodges Aubyn Earl Hodges, 80, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Perry Hunsaker officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. today in West Park Cemetery in Hereford by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Hodges was born in White Deer. He served in the Army in Germany during World War II and was awarded several medals, including the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. In 1937, he moved to Hereford from White Deer. He farmed the old prisoner of war camp southwest of Hereford. On Nov. 19, 1950, he married Nell Bell in Amarillo. He retired from farming in 1986 and moved to Amarillo in 1988. Aubyn was very active in the Hereford Campfire Girls. He served as president and spent many summers at Campfire Camp in New Mexico. He will be remembered for his lifelong contributions to the agricultural industry in the Hereford area. Music was a large part of his life - either playing the piano by ear or playing the harmonica. All those around him were able to enjoy his special talents and his love of music. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Deborah Jan Fuller and husband, Craig, of Dalhart and Kiska Ann Jones and husband, Mike, of Richmond; a son, Aubyn Earl Hodges Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Enid, Okla.; a sister, Jesslyn Williams of Amarillo; a brother-in-law, Julian Johnson of Lubbock; eight grandchildren, Amy West, Brett and Tate Fuller, Cody and Kaitlyn Jones, Justin Hodges, Amanda Wyrick and Misty Copeland; and five great-grandchildren. Holmes, 65, of Amarillo died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004. Services will be at noon Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Tulsa, Okla., with the Rev. Bob Potter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Holmes was born and raised in Tulsa and was a graduate of Central High School in Tulsa. He was a veteran of the Navy, where he was a gunner's mate. He had been a resident of Amarillo for more than 25 years. He was a salesman for Herzfeld's Beauty Supply. Survivors include four sons, Warren Holmes and Jack Holmes, both of Amarillo, Terry John Holmes of Austin and Leo Holmes of Magalia, Calif.; four sisters, Nadine Seitz of Amarillo, Beverly Potter of Bixby, Okla., Phyllis Whisman of Mounds, Okla., and Sandra Troxell of Jenks, Okla.; a brother, Wesley Holmes of Tulsa; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel with Hector Gallegos, deacon, officiating. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Rex Nicholl officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Sandoval was born July 31, 1939, in Tucumcari, N.M., to Emilio and Leonarda Garcia Sandoval. He worked in construction for 50 years as a concrete finisher. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leonardo Sandoval. Survivors include his special friend, Juliana Serna; two sons, Gerald Sandoval and Jose Luis Sandoval; two daughters, Sarah Sandoval and Leonarda Sandoval; six brothers, Marcos Sandoval, Johnny Sandoval, Cleo Sandoval, Freddie Sandoval, Tony Sandoval and Jesse Sandoval; two sisters, Juanita Cortez and Carmen Cortez; and five grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Oct. 25, 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oscar D. Shorten Sr. Oscar D. Shorten Sr., 75, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. James L. Collins, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Shorten was born July 16, 1929, the fifth child of Lanoria and Phillip Shorten Sr. Oscar completed high school and attended Butler College in Tyler. He then entered the Air Force and was stationed in Tokyo. After his tour of duty, he returned and entered Paul Quinn College, where he obtained his bachelor of arts degree in education. He taught physical education in the Dallas school system. He moved to Amarillo and began his employment of 30 years at the VA Hospital. At his retirement, he held the position of chief of supply, processing and distribution. On June 12, 1965, Oscar was united in holy matrimony to Beverly Greene of Oklahoma City, who was his loving and faithful wife of 39 years. To this union, one son was born, Oscar D. Shorten Jr. The family raised two other sons, a grandnephew, Steve McKinnie, and a foster son, Charles Meander. In addition to his family, he and his wife were house parents to five children of the Children's Cottage for two years. Oscar's hobbies included building his home, coaching baseball for the YMCA, bowling and walking. Brother Shorten accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed attending Sunday school, learning the word and singing in the choir, as he loved gospel music and praising the Lord. He was a member of the trustee board and was active in the building fund. Brother Shorten was faithful to the Lord and to his church until Christ called him home. Brother Shorten was a loyal member of the Markwell Lodge No. 146, where he was a three-time past Potentate and currently held the position of Recorder. He was a 32-degree Mason of John W. McKinney Consistory No. 283. He was also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1475. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and two brothers. Survivors include his wife; a son, Oscar D. Shorten Jr. and wife, Deidre; two grandsons, Christian and Jonathan Shorten; a brother, Jefferson Shorten; and a host of other relatives and friends. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Follett High School Auditorium with Dan Carter, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Mason Funeral Home of Shattuck, Okla. Mr. Gex was a lifetime rancher and farmer who loved his family and land very much. Survivors include his mother, Helen Dye of Denver; a sister, Betty Dye of Denver; his wife, Debby; three daughters, Danielle Terrel of Great Falls, Mont., Dalynne Gex of Woodward, Okla., and Lutie Gex of Follett; a son, J.B. Gex of Oklahoma City; and seven grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Follett National Bank for educational and scholarship purposes or to a favorite charity. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tracy Dunn-Noland officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, north of Hereford, by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Solomon was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Hall County, the son of Emmett and Velma Solomon. He married Betty Jo Mitchell in 1947 at Memphis and had been a farmer in Hereford for more than 43 years. Mr. Solomon was a veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member and very active in the Fellowship of Believers Church and loved to play dominoes. He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Betty Jean Stanford. Survivors include two sons, Michael Solomon and wife, Anna, of Hereford and Craig Solomon and wife, Judy, of Vega; two daughters, Cheryl Betzen and husband, Tom, of Hereford and Suzanne Kennedy and husband, Pat, of Yoakum; two brothers, Garland Solomon and wife, Novelle, of Hereford and Emmett Solomon and wife, Jan, of Huntsville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice, Fellowship of Believers Church or Christ's Community Fellowship Church of Vega.
