Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Tuesday, November 9, 2004 Amarillo Elder Jesse Lee Cortez Elder Jesse Lee Cortez, 67, of Amarillo died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Church with Elisha Demerson, superintendent, and Joe Taylor, elder, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Cortez was born Feb. 20, 1937, in Amarillo. His parents were the late elder H.W. and Thenelia Cortez. Jesse attended public school in Amarillo and graduated from Carver High School in 1955. He attended Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan., where he received a degree of proficiency in public oratory. He also held a bachelor of theology degree from Southern California Community Bible College of Long Beach, Calif. He accepted Christ into his life at an early age under the pastorship of Elder J.L. Langston and his father, the Rev. H.W. Cortez, who was assistant pastor at the time. After venturing to Washington, D.C., Jesse met and married Beatrice Smith in 1959. To this union four children were born. He served for a number of years in Washington, D.C., as an associate minister of the Temple Church of God in Christ under the able and distinguished leadership of Bishop Samuel Kelsey. He also served as district Sunday school superintendent, assistant state Sunday school superintendent and finally, state Sunday school superintendent. He also served as secretary of the State Ordination Board. He then accepted the call to Evangelistic ministry. He conducted many successful revivals across the country. After accepting a pastorate in Newport News, Va., he enjoyed a fruitful ministry, during which time he purchased a beautiful church edifice. He served as district superintendent of the Richmond district and secretary to the bishop. After another season of fruitful evangelistic ministry, he moved to California and was appointed pastor of Bethel Church in Santa Barbara, Calif., and also served as state Sunday school evangelist. During his first tenure as pastor of Bethel Church, he opened a facility called the Lighthouse, a coffeehouse ministry to needy youth. This soon expanded to a free lunch program weekdays and breakfast on Saturdays, as a means of reaching and establishing these hopeless persons. Many of those reached were transients, so the need to establish a home for guidance and counseling as a rehabilitation center was evident. On June 15, 1971, Casa de Vida, a residence housing about 25 persons, was opened. After the rehabilitation center was established, Jess Cortez resigned from the pastorate of Bethel Church, and in 1973 organized Community Christian Fellowship and Southern California Community Bible College of Santa Barbara. In June 1974, Casa de Vida purchased a 50-acre ranch in Buellton, Calif., called Morningstar Farm. In 1975, two more residential facilities were opened in Goleta, Calif. During the next eight years, he was again appointed as pastor of Bethel Church in Santa Barbara, served as regional Sunday school superintendent, secretary of the State Sunday School Board of Education and a member of the Bishop's Task Force. In 1984, he returned to Amarillo to assist his father in his ministry. He organized and served as president of Samaritans Outreach Ministries Inc., a community outreach which operated a free food pantry and clothes closet. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Baron of Los Angeles, and Trevor and Orzaindro, both of Amarillo; a daughter, Manoa of Richfield, Utah; two brothers, Richard of Henderson, Nev., and Therlow of Denver; four sisters, Joni Edwards, Nadine Johnson, Opaline Thrower and Daphine Hendry, all of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
