Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Thursday, November 11, 2004 Amarillo Edna Mae LaFon Beville Edna Mae LaFon Beville, 94, formerly of Amarillo, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, in Bethesda, Md. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the United Methodist Church in Clarendon with the Rev. Terry Tamplen of First United Methodist Church in Odessa officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mrs. Beville, the daughter of early Panhandle settlers, lived in Amarillo during the early 1930s after a childhood in Lelia Lake and Clarendon, where she and her family were members of First Methodist Church. In Amarillo, Polk Street Methodist Church was her home. She attended Clarendon College before her marriage to Ross Harwood Beville, whose family resided in Clarendon and Amarillo. After moving to Washington, D.C., in 1936 to pursue Ross' career in radio engineering, they maintained their Texas friendships by returning regularly to Clarendon High School reunions and to visit their Amarillo families at biennial family reunions at the Currie ranch. In the east, Ross' career took them to the cobblestoned, gaslit streets of old Philadelphia, the subways and "elevateds" of New York City, the storied "Hurricane of '38'" on the south shore of Long Island, the excitement and glamour of Washington, D.C., and eventually to historic Takoma Park, Md., where as the wife of the mayor, Edna Mae enjoyed being "First Lady" of Takoma Park. Edna Mae was not only an artist, but also a fashion designer, and received awards from Vogue magazine; one award was a three-week tour of the fashion centers of Europe, where she was entertained by the haute couture houses in Paris, Rome and London. She was an active clubwoman in the arts and politics. After Ross was recognized as "the father of FM radio," he retired and they traveled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and the United States, returning a couple of times a year to Amarillo to visit old friends and family. Edna Mae has been surrounded by a great and loving family all of her life. She and Ross and their children have been blessed by the regular family reunions held on the Currie ranch as long as we have lived. Survivors include a daughter, LaFon of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; a son, Ross Harwood of Carmel, Calif.; a son-in-law, Bill; a daughter-in-law, Judy; a sister, Roberta Currie of Amarillo; a brother, Lowell LaFon of Albuquerque, N.M.; two nephews, Dr. Hugh Bob Currie and Jim Currie, both of Amarillo; two nieces, Sondra Currie and Sandy Currie, both of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of great-nieces and great-nephews, many of them Curries residing in Amarillo.
