Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Tuesday, November 30, 2004 Amarillo William Edward "Bill" Lancaster William Edward "Bill" Lancaster, 84, of Amarillo died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with Dan Shaeffer officiating. Mr. Lancaster was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Fort Worth to Fred Dailey and Ora Pippen. At the age of 6 he and his sister, Dorothy, were taken in as foster children by Mr. and Mrs. Harris and Grace Lancaster who lived north of Lampasas on School Creek. He attended school at Friendship through the sixth grade, and then attended Lampasas schools through his graduation in 1937. He attended Tarleton State University for a year before going to Snyder, where he worked for Western Auto. On his return to Lampasas, he continued to work for Western Auto selling the first electric appliances in the county. For a short time he worked in the Fort Worth area then left for the Panhandle of Texas, where he owned and operated Western Auto stores in Borger and Stinnett. For the last 30 years he was president and operating officer of a chemical and plastics company, K-LAN in Amarillo. It can be said that Mr. Lancaster lived life to the fullest. In his very early years he pursued a music career, writing and recording songs and traveling the country with the famous Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys. At his Western Auto Store in Borger he organized a band, the Circle Arrow Boys, and they played every Saturday night in the street in front of his store. He loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He was also a pilot, flying small single engine planes. It was his practice when he came to see his family in Lampasas to "buzz" the house so they would know to follow the plane to a landing area to pick him up. The most famous fly over came one Sunday morning while the family was in church. He completed his usual signal and then attempted to land in a field across from the church. However, the field was muddy and when the wheels touched the ground the plane took a sudden stop and nosed into the ground. Unhurt, he and his passenger climbed out and his folks, with the whole congregation of the church looking on, picked him up. Brother Draper was the minister holding the service that day and to this day, his son, the Rev. Jimmy Draper, uses that incident as an illustration in his sermons all over the county to make the point about knowing when you are on solid ground. Mr. Lancaster attended that same Baptist church that he buzzed that day throughout his boyhood days. He remained a Baptist for the rest of his life. He and his wife, Corrine, were married for 26 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents; two sisters, Dorothy Hale and Margaret Middleton; two brothers-in-law, Truman Hale and Allan King; a brother, Paul Dailey; and a sister-in-law, Mary Dailey.
