Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with the Rev. Roy Wheeler officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Mausoleum by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Bearden was born Jan. 11, 1924, to Jim and Ida Mae Bearden in Obar, N.M. Mr. Bearden served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the European Theater during World War ll and was awarded the Silver Star. He married June Hinds in Dalhart on Dec. 25, 1945. Mr. Bearden was a Phillips dealer for 35 years, then a Shamrock dealer for another 10 years before his retirement in 1986. He then started his own Bowles distributorship and worked for the next 14 years until this summer, when he became ill. Mr. Bearden was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church and served as a deacon for many years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Yokley and husband, Howard, of Norman, Okla., and Pamela Hotchkiss of Amarillo; and four granddaughters, Whitney Woodard and Ashley Hotchkiss, both of Austin, Cory Matos and husband, Tony, of San Antonio and Haley Hotchkiss of Amarillo. He was a longtime resident of Amarillo before moving to Eunice, N.M., in 2001. Mr. Lawrence joined the Marines in 1942 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. He was employed by Phillips Petroleum for 39 years before retiring in 1984 as plant operator. He married Anne Crawford on Jan. 3, 1952. Mr. Lawrence was a member of American Legion Post No. 45 in Eunice and VFW Post No. 1789 in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters. Nelson Donald K. Nelson, 76, of Amarillo died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Marty Loberg of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Nelson was born in Monte Vista, Colo., on Nov. 5, 1928, to John and Hilma Nelson. He attended schools in Monte Vista, then joined the Navy. He served honorably. For three years and nine months, he was assigned to the USS Prairie and earned the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. His tenor was in the engine room aboard ship during the Korean War. Don was always very patriotic. After his discharge, he helped his father on his farm and ranch. Tri Me Potato Co. opened in Amarillo, and Don arranged this business starting in April 1954. He met his wife, La Juan Farquhar, and they married Jan. 14, 1957. He retired from Whites Stores Inc. They lived in Amarillo, raising two wonderful daughters. After the girls grew up and married, they were transferred to San Angelo from April 1, 1981, to May 1, 1985, then transferred to Shawnee, Okla., on July 1, 1986, and then to Lawton, Okla., in October, 1987. They were then transferred back to Amarillo in 1989. He loved Amarillo and planned his retirement here. After his wife retired in May, 1993, he spent his time working in his yard and home. He enjoyed trips to Colorado and San Antonio. His great pleasure was deep-sea fishing in the Gulf. Don will be remembered for his enjoyment and love of his neighbors. He is remembered as a kind and loving family man who cherished his two daughters and loved seeing them and his wonderful grandchildren. He enjoyed special occasions with his family and grandchildren. Don was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, being baptized at age 9 in Monte Vista. He had love and respect for the Lord throughout his life. During his last days, he was at peace with his Lord. Don was a very private person who was always close to the Lord and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Julie D. Peterson and husband, Billy, of San Antonio and Carol D. McDougall and husband, Mark, of Lubbock; a brother, Curtis Nelson and wife, Jean, of Monte Vista; and five grandchildren whom he enjoyed and cherished. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Melton was born Jan. 30, 1911, in Temple. She married Wayne Thomas Melton on Dec. 21, 1927, in Wellington. She and her husband managed Town House Apartments in Borger from 1965 until 1976. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1993. She had been a resident of Borger from 1943 until 1986, when she moved to Pampa. She was a former member of Bunavista Methodist Church in Borger. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 4, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area John Wallace Fields SHAMROCK - John Wallace Fields, 87, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Lowe, pastor, and Joe G. Jernigan officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors. Lt. Col. Fields was born Oct. 17, 1917, at Ramsdell on the family ranch, near Shamrock, to H.T. Fields and Flora Lee Fields. He graduated from Shamrock High School, starring in football and track, and received a degree in chemistry from Texas Technological College in 1940. He was a three-year track letterman for the Red Raiders under legendary Tech coach Burl Huffman. With war approaching, he joined the Army Air Corps, and received his wings in the class of '41C. He was assigned to the 7th Bombardment Group and later, the 435th Armed Reconnaissance Squadron of the 19th Bombardment Group, which was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses. He was a pilot on the mission, just prior to the fall of the Philippines, to evacuate Philippine President Manuel Quezon and his General Staff. Fields flew a total of 51 combat missions in the Pacific, later serving as director of operations at Lincoln, Neb., and Topeka, Kan., where he flew such aircraft as the B-25 Mitchell, A-26 Invader, B-26 Marauder, B-24 Liberator, B-29 Superfortress and B-32 Dominator. He was discharged in 1945 as a major and recalled to active duty as a lieutenant colonel in 1951 during the Korean War, serving in England as deputy base commander at RAF Mildenhall. Fields received the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak-leaf cluster, Presidential Unit Citation with five oak-leaf clusters, World War II Victory Medal and American Defense Medal. Following World War II, he was a consignee for Magnolia Petroleum Co., later Mobil Oil Corp. in Shamrock for many years, and was devoted to raising Polled Hereford Cattle. He was an avid hunter, passing on a respect for wildlife and the good husbandry of livestock and land to his family. He loved bird dogs and retrievers and was an accomplished horseman. He served in many leadership roles in Shamrock. He was president of Shamrock School Board, president of DeShazo-George American Legion Post No. 68 and board of directors of South Wheeler County Hospital District. He was a charter member of Shamrock Country Club, Shamrock Boosters Club and Shamrock Sheriff's Posse. He was president of the Wheeler County Appraisal District Board and was the Wheeler County veterans service officer for many years. He was a loving and much-loved husband, father and grandfather, and a Panhandle pioneer in his own right, who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a beloved sister, Alma Lee Stevens. Survivors include his wife, Cecile; a son, Ken Fields and wife, Carol, of Pampa; a daughter, Cindy Casey and husband, John, of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Katherine Elaine Devoll, Sarah Elizabeth Bauman, Mary Grace Fields, Justin Casey and Shelby Casey; and two great-grandchildren, Jaycee Ruth Devoll and Elizabeth Grace Devoll. Mrs. Roper was born July 19, 1905, 7 miles northeast of Eureka, Kan. She lived in the Balko community for more than 30 years. She married Ralph Hibbs on Aug. 25, 1923, in Liberal, Kan., and he died in 1950. She married Otto Roper in 1953 in Clayton, N.M., and he died in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of Mennonite Brethren Church of Balko, Okla. She made her home at Hansford County Manor for the last couple of years, leaving a host of friends and loving staff. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Emma Day. Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. today in Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Templo Getsemani Spanish Assembly of God with the Rev. Samuel de los Santos and Paula Madrid officiating. Burial will be in Merino Cemetery. Mrs. Nunez was born Oct. 30, 1963, in Fresno, Calif. She worked for Sun-Mart. Survivors include her father, Joaquin de los Santos of Amarillo, Texas; a son, Manuel Nunez of Sterling; two daughters, Solano Fe Nunez and Rosa Trinidad Nunez, both of Sterling; and two sisters, Paula Madrid of Amarillo and Leticia Lopez of Dumas, Texas.
