Bottoms Beery "J.B." Bottoms, 90, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Dr. Gil Lain, pastor of Paramount Baptist Church, and Kerry Arnold, minister of South Georgia Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Bottoms was born Feb. 24, 1914, in Commerce. He graduated from East Texas State Teachers College, where he earned his master's degree. He moved to Amarillo in 1938, where he taught math, shop and mechanical drafting for seven years at Sam Houston Junior High School. He worked for Stearn-Rogers for two years and for Southwestern Public Service Co., from 1945 until 1980, as resident engineer. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He married Virginia Knight on Nov. 9, 1935, in Commerce. Beery loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family and was admired and respected by friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his parents, D.W. Bottoms and Daisy Sanders Bottoms. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Beverly Edes of Dallas and Sharon Arnold and husband, Kerry, of Amarillo; a sister, Maxine Hayslip of Round Rock; five grandchildren, Randy Edes, Lisa Anderson, Steve Arnold, Chris Arnold and Angie Hickey; and four great-grandchildren, Nicole Arnold, Meagan Anderson, Cora Hickey and Darby Hickey. Ms. Andrews was born Kena Jean Rucker on Dec. 13, 1955, in Plainview to W.A. "Bill" Rucker and Estell Guice. She grew up in Quitaque. Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Donna Rucker and Anne Rucker- Smith; three children, Dana Marie Contreras, Raymond Arthur Andrews Jr. and Sueleta Jean Andrews; and five grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 9, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nona Reed Collins Nona Reed Collins, 79, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of Covenant of Joy Christian Church with Dr. Mike Oden and Mike Williams, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Collins died a peaceful death on Jan. 6, 2005, at Craig Methodist Windflower Nursing Unit in Amarillo, following a long decline with Alzheimer's. She was 79 years old. Nona was born Aug. 5, 1925, to James O. and Jessie V. Threet Reed in Electra. She grew up in various small towns in Texas and Oklahoma, but it was in Childress that she met the love of her life, Jack Arche Collins. Her teenage diary records that after her first date with Arche, she had met the man she was going to marry. Following a long separation during Jack's service in Europe and North Africa in World War II, she and Jack married Feb. 22, 1945, shortly after his return. They settled in Childress and began their family. She gave birth to Terence James Collins in 1948 and to Steven Reed Collins in 1951. During her years in Childress, she and Jack were active in Central Christian Church, where among other roles, they served as sponsors for the youth fellowship. After moves to Borger and Vernon, they moved to Amarillo in 1959 and have remained here. During her years in Amarillo, Nona worked as a pharmacist assistant at Medical Towers Pharmacy and later Gibsons, and she had many cherished friendships from those years. In retirement, Nona devoted her time and green thumb to having a flourishing jungle of foliage at their home in southeast Amarillo. Much of her time was spent planting, mowing, pruning and developing a dark tan. Also in retirement, she became active in Covenant of Joy Christian Church, where she found faith, fellowship and an extended family. The light of that church family shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Craig Methodist Windflower Nursing Unit and BSA Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Nona. Survivors include her husband of almost 60 years; a son, Steve; Steve's wife, Beth, whom she loved as a daughter; Steve's children, Drew and Shelley; and Terry's children, Erin and Ryan. Mrs. Roach was born Nov. 24, 1915, in North Texas. She moved from Childress to Amarillo in 1937 to attend beauty school. She was a licensed beautician and owner of Thelma Louise Beauty Shop until her retirement. Thelma Louise met the love of her life, Jesse Roach, while applying for a job in the barber/beauty shop that he owned on West Sixth. They married on June 22, 1941, at San Jacinto Baptist Church. He preceded her in death in 1992. Thelma Louise taught a Bible study class at First Baptist Church in Amarillo for 45 years. Survivors include a son, Dr. G.A. Hill Manlauf Kinsey "M.K." Hill, 86, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Small officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. Mr. Hill was born near Hammon, Okla. He married Violet Eason on Aug. 19, 1942, in St. Louis, and she preceded him in death in 1989. He served in the Army Air Corps and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Hill and his wife owned the Religious Shopping Center in the 1950s. He served as a deacon for more than 40 years in various churches and at the time of his death, was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Mrs. Mears was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Clarendon and had been a lifetime resident of Clarendon. She married Bonnie Ray "Bill" Mears on Dec. 1, 1943, at Amarillo. She was a homemaker and a member of the Donley County Senior Citizens Association and Clarendon Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 5, 1984. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Miami Cemetery in Miami with the Rev. Mark A. Arrington officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Locke was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Alamogordo, N.M. He married Betty Dyar Sugar on June 26, 1962, in Pampa. He was a member of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, White Deer Lions Club and First Baptist Church of White Deer. He was a generous donor to area museums. He was a trustee with the Panhandle Square House Museum and an advisor to the Roberts County Museum, as well as the White Deer Land Museum in Pampa. He also worked with the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He farmed and ranched in Carson and Armstrong counties for many years. He was a Navy veteran, serving on the USS Sierra. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Locke Arrington, and a brother, Wallace Lynn Locke. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bruce Douglas Locke of Tulsa, Okla., and Larry Martin Locke of Dallas; a stepson, Gary Sugar of Pampa; a stepdaughter, Carol Ann Martin of San Saba; seven grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home of Quanah. Mr. Carroll was born Sept. 11, 1937, to Robert Elmer and Rosa Lee McCain Carroll in Goodlett. He married Shirley Hough on Nov. 29, 1969, in Crowell. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 9, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raymond White HEREFORD - Raymond White, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Amarillo. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Cosby officiating. The family will have a private burial. Arrangements are by Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. White was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Lockney, the youngest son of William and Myrtie White. He graduated from Sudan High School in 1939 and Texas Tech University in 1947. He married Avis Herring on Jan. 29, 1944, in Lubbock. Raymond was a veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps as a flight instrument trainer from 1943 to 1945. He moved to Hereford from Friona in 1955. Raymond owned and operated H & W Implement and then White Implement Company in Hereford for more than 42 years until his retirement in 1997. For more than 50 years, he was a member of First Baptist Church and the Hereford Lions Club. Raymond served on the Hereford school board for eight years, was past president of the Deaf Smith Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of the Region 16 Education Service Center in Amarillo and received a 50-year Perfect Attendance Member of the Hereford Lions Club. He was the president of the Hereford Lions Club from 1964 to 1965, district governor of Lions International from 1972 to 1973, past president of Past District Governor's Association of Texas, past president and board of directors of the Texas Lions Camp (Kerrville), president and drive chairman of the United Way and a deacon, (former chairman) and choir member of First Baptist Church of Hereford. Raymond also received a Lifetime Membership with Girlstown, U.S.A., the Lion's Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hereford Citizen of the Year Award in 1974, Hereford Whiteface Booster Club Fan of the Year in 2001, Honorary Lifetime Membership with Lions International, the Melvin Jones Fellow in Lions International, was elected to the Texas Lions Hall of Fame and was a Century Club member and Jack Weich Fellow of the Texas Lions Camp. He was preceded in death by his wife, and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Shaw and husband, Sid, of Hereford and Sherry Talley and husband, Randy, of Odessa; a son, J. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Carmichael- Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mrs. Berry was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Healdton to Lee Earl and Allie Beatrice Myers Gage. She was reared in Pampa and attended Pampa schools. She left an everlasting heritage to her family and friends with her dynamic personality that portrayed her creativity and her unique sense of humor that also included an extended helping hand to those she deemed in need. Margarette, our mother, nanny, sister, aunt and friend, will be forever in the hearts of those she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Berry; three stepsons, Darrell Berry, Danny Berry and Ronnie Berry; her parents; two brothers, Roy Foster and Eugene "Bo" Gage; and three sisters, Margie Roe, Betty Marchman and Barbara Hicks. Mr. Parsley was born March 1, 1935, in Gray County, Texas. He married Kathleen McDaniel on Sept. 4, 1955, in Clayton. He graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 1979. He served as a Methodist minister in several towns, including Quitaque, Flomot, Lorenzo, Hamlin, Crowell, Olton, Trinity, Plainview, Haskell, Lazbuddie, Oklahoma Lane and Seagraves. He retired in 1997. He had lived in Felt for the last four years. He served on Ministerial Alliance in most of the towns he served in. He was past member of Rotary International and Lions Club. He was preceded in death by a grandchild and a brother, Sammy Parsley. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 9, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere Elmer Philip Lahnert BLACK FOREST, Colo. - Elmer Philip Lahnert, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Colorado Springs. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Black Forest Community Church with the Rev. Nick Natelli officiating. Arrangements are by Cappadona Family Services in Colorado Springs. Mr. Lahnert was born May 29, 1928, in Johnstown as the 12th of 13 children of Philip and Christina Lahnert. After graduating from Windsor High School in 1946, he served with the Army in Korea from 1951 to 1952. Elmer married Dorcas Burns on Sept. 20, 1952, in Lincoln, Neb. He graduated in 1958 with a master's degree in industrial arts from Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley. He spent the next 38 years involved in high school education, first as a teacher and coach, and later as athletic director of Air Academy High School, retiring in 1988. Elmer is fondly remembered by his students as a person who would go the extra mile to help them achieve success. He loved his family, friends, hunting, fishing, camping, golf and tennis, and watching his eight grandchildren participate in various school and sporting events as well as untangling their fishing lines. Survivors include his wife of 52 years; three sons, David Lahnert and wife, Laurie, of Colorado Springs, Lance Lahnert of Amarillo, Texas, and Brant Lahnert and wife, Laurie, of Golden; a daughter Chris Lawson and husband, Pat, of Denver; eight grandchildren: Nikki, Lance and Meggie Lawson, and Tadd, Luke, Sarah, Philip and Abby Lahnert; two sisters, Lea Bender and husband, Dave, of Johnstown and Esther Niermann of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and nieces and nephews, and assorted golf, fishing, tennis and hunting buddies and numerous friends. All of us will miss him dearly. The family suggests memorials be to the Elmer Lahnert Memorial Fund, in care of Black Forest Community Church, P.O. Box 88156, Colorado Springs, CO 80908-8156.
