Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Monday, January 10, 2005 Amarillo William "Bill" Porter William "Bill" Porter, 80, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick and the Rev. Renae Haiduk officiating. Private family burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Porter was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Shreveport, La. He was first introduced to school bands and orchestras in Ferriday, La., where he played baritone and tuba. After graduation in 1941, he attended Southeastern Louisiana College, where he attended a year and a half before joining the Navy. He attended the U.S. Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C., and was assigned to the USS Wasp band. In 1946, he was stationed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., where he met Shirley Maxfield. They married and moved to Norman, Okla., where Mr. Porter received his bachelor of music education and master's of music education degrees from the University of Oklahoma in 1951. He then became the band director in Moore, Okla. The family moved to Amarillo in 1957 when Bill became the band and orchestra director at Sam Houston Junior High. He moved to Crockett Junior High in 1960, and in 1962, moved to Tascosa High School, where he remained until 1977. While at Tascosa, his orchestras were twice chosen as Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor groups, selected as outstanding orchestra at Tri- State and Greater Southwest Music Festivals and performed at Southwest Music Educators National Conference. He also conducted the marching, concert and stage bands. In 1978, he and Shirley moved to Richardson, where he conducted the orchestra at J.J. Pearce High School, and then in 1979, he assumed the leadership of the J. Frank Dobie High School Orchestra in Pasadena, where he served until retirement in 1987. After retirement, he and Shirley were executive directors of the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo. Throughout and after his teaching career, he shared his love of music with thousands of young people across the Southwest, as he also served as adjudicator and clinician for bands and orchestras in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. Bill attained many honors during his professional career, including president of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, State Orchestra chairman and vice president of TMEA. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Rebel Hall of Fame at Tascosa High School. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kay of Dallas and Brenda Wilkes of Amarillo; and three loving grandchildren, Richard Wilkes of Austin and Michael Wilkes and Kathyrn Wilkes, both of Amarillo. Osage St. Mr. Howard married Carolyn Walker on June 22, 1956, in Amarillo. He was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church, where he also served as an usher. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis Howard of Amarillo; three daughters, DeLynda "Dee Dee" Howard of Amarillo, Deborah Brown of Redmond, Ore., and Denise Kleinstiver of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Doyle Howard of Duncanville; and six grandchildren, Candace Brown and Colby Brown, both of Redmond, Joshua Morris of Las Cruces, N.M., Carmella Howard and Rachel Kleinstiver, both of Albuquerque, and Kaitlyn Howard of Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 10, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conrad Goligowski Conrad Goligowski, 81, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Harold Waldow officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Goligowski was born in Todd County, Minn., to Peter J. and Anna R. Goligowski, who were farmers in Minnesota. He served in the Army Air Corps in the 13th Airborne Division as a paratrooper during World War II. After participating in several major battles in the European Theater, he was honorably discharged from duty. Mr. Goligowski married Betty Robinson in August 1950 in Milwaukee. He and his wife moved to Texas in 1951 to escape the cold. Mr. Goligowski will be remembered as "Mr. Spudnut." For 11 years, from 1958 to 1971, "Connie," as everyone knew him, and Betty owned the Spudnut Shop on McMasters Street. He influenced the lives of many youngsters, teaching them responsibility and confidence by selling Spudnuts door-to-door. He and Betty also owned many properties and helped the lower income families of Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard, and his parents. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Craig Goligowski and wife, Patricia, and Brent Goligowski and wife, Brenda, all of Amarillo; and two grandsons, Patrick and Thomas. Yorke John Gunn, 83, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church Chapel. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Col. Gunn attended Calena High School in Calena, Ill., and University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He was the operations officer at Tinker Air Force Base. He was a pilot in World War II and served in the Atlantic, African and Pacific theaters. He served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a geologist and oceanographer for the Exxon Corporation before becoming an independent geologist. He married Margaret Mae Harris in Elizabeth City, N.C., on July 8, 1943, in First Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Fleege; a brother, William Gunn; and his parents. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sherie Lynn Gaultney of Amarillo; and a granddaughter, Ashley Braboy of San Antonio. She had been a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe P. Jefferson, in May 1974; her parents; a son, Freddie Davis; four brothers; and a sister. Survivors include two daughters, Essie Lee Adams and husband, Roosevelt, of Amarillo and Marva Lee Cook of Baton Rouge, La.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Mr. Brooks was a retired teacher of 41 years. He served in the Army during World War II with the antiaircraft division. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Kornerstone Funeral Directors. Mrs. Thompson was born July 14, 1912, in Tulia, where she grew up and graduated from Tulia High School. She married Skeet Thompson on July 8, 1931, in Clovis, N.M. They farmed in Tulia until Mr. Thompson died in May 1960. She then moved into Tulia, and she worked as an accountant for a number of years. She also worked at Bob Goodwin's Grocery Store, ran the Love Elevator at Kaffir and worked for the Tulia Livestock Auction. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Buell Lee Thompson; a sister, Betty Golden; and a grandson, Terry Lee Webb. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Jeep Webb of Borger; a daughter-in-law, June Thompson of Tulia; a brother, Wayne George of Tulia; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Johnson, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Hardeman County. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Childress Church of Christ with Trey Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 8, 1910. Eddie and the former Charlene "Dude" Gephart were married Jan. 6, 1933, in Hollis, Okla. He was a self-employed farmer for 45 years. He was a Mason of the Grand Lodge of Texas for 50 years, a member of the Childress A.F. & A.M. Lodge No. 695, and was also a member of Childress Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Bob, in 1969; six sisters; and four brothers. Survivors include his wife; a son, Tommy Johnson of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Lance Johnson, Leah Freeman, Cory Johnson and Chase Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Tierrah, Amber, Jordyn, Jake and Mallissa. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 10, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edgar Mae Mongole CLARENDON - Edgar Mae Mongole, 100, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Hansford Manor in Spearman. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Citizens Cemetery with the Rev. Don McDonald of First Presbyterian Church of Canyon officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors. Miss Mongole was born Feb. 6, 1904, in White Deer to John and Maggie Mongole, early pioneers of the Texas Panhandle, who farmed near White Deer, but later moved to Clarendon for their daughters to attend public schools. After graduation from high school, Edgar Mae attended several colleges and universities in Texas and elsewhere, including Peabody University in Tennessee. She was a graduate of Texas Tech. She was a resident of Clarendon most of her life, having taught in Clarendon schools 43 years. Edgar Mae and her sister moved to Palo Duro Retirement Village in Canyon in 1985, where they had many friends. She was always concerned for others, especially children. Survivors include her sister, Mabel, of Hansford Manor in Spearman; a number of cousins; and special caregivers, Lupe and Laurie Echevarria. Burial will be in Kenton Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Like was born July 4, 1920, in Des Moines to Isaac Like and Margaret Erma Lawrence Like. He graduated from Des Moines High School in 1938. Survivors include two daughters, Diana Sue Wheeler of Wewoka, Okla., and Cinda Ann Campbell of Mount Vernon, Iowa; a son, Everett Eugene Like of Folsom; a brother, Joel Like of Clayton; and seven grandchildren.
