Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick and the Rev. Renae Haiduk officiating. Private family burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Porter was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Shreveport, La. He was first introduced to school bands and orchestras in Ferriday, La., where he played baritone and tuba. After graduation in 1941, he attended Southeastern Louisiana College, where he attended a year and a half before joining the Navy. He attended the U.S. Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C., and was assigned to the USS Wasp band. In 1946, he was stationed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., where he met Shirley Maxfield. They married and moved to Norman, Okla., where Mr. Porter received his bachelor of music education and master's of music education degrees from the University of Oklahoma in 1951. He then became the band director in Moore, Okla. The family moved to Amarillo in 1957 when Bill became the band and orchestra director at Sam Houston Junior High. He moved to Crockett Junior High in 1960, and in 1962, moved to Tascosa High School, where he remained until 1977. While at Tascosa, his orchestras were twice chosen as Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor groups, selected as outstanding orchestra at Tri- State and Greater Southwest Music Festivals and performed at Southwest Music Educators National Conference. He also conducted the marching, concert and stage bands. In 1978, he and Shirley moved to Richardson, where he conducted the orchestra at J.J. Pearce High School, and then in 1979, he assumed the leadership of the J. Frank Dobie High School Orchestra in Pasadena, where he served until retirement in 1987. After retirement, he and Shirley were executive directors of the Greater Southwest Music Festival in Amarillo. Throughout and after his teaching career, he shared his love of music with thousands of young people across the Southwest, as he also served as adjudicator and clinician for bands and orchestras in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. Bill attained many honors during his professional career, including president of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, State Orchestra chairman and vice president of TMEA. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Rebel Hall of Fame at Tascosa High School. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kay of Dallas and Brenda Wilkes of Amarillo; and three loving grandchildren, Richard Wilkes of Austin and Michael Wilkes and Kathryn Wilkes, both of Amarillo. "Jim" Felts Jr., 55, of Amarillo died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Mount Olive Cemetery in Big Spring with Lorin McDowell officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Felts was born and raised in Big Spring. He moved to Amarillo in 1993 from Riverside, Calif. He served in the Air Force. Mr. Felts was a home painter for many years. He was preceded in death by a son, Chad Felts in 1995. Survivors include two sons, Chris Felts of San Diego and Jeremy Felts of San Antonio; his father, Jim Felts Sr. of Amarillo; his mother, Marion Slavens of Big Spring; a sister, Connie Fletcher of Austin; and a granddaughter. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 11, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conrad "Connie" Goligowski Conrad "Connie" Goligowski, 81, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005. Memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Harold Waldow officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Goligowski was born in Browerville, Minn., to Peter J. and Anna R. Goligowski, who were farmers in Minnesota. He served in the Army Air Corps in the 13th Airborne Division as a paratrooper during World War II. After participating in several major battles in the European Theater, he was honorably discharged from duty. Mr. Goligowski married Elizabeth Robinson on Aug. 19, 1950, in Milwaukee. He and his wife moved to Texas in 1951 to escape the cold. Mr. Goligowski will be remembered as "Mr. Spudnut." For 11 years, from 1958 to 1971, "Connie," as everyone knew him, and Betty owned the Spudnut Shop on McMasters Street. He influenced the lives of many youngsters, teaching them responsibility and confidence by selling Spudnuts door-to-door. He and Betty also owned many properties and helped the lower-income families of Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard, and his parents. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Craig Goligowski and wife, Patricia, and Brent Goligowski and wife, Brenda, all of Amarillo; a sister, Marie Price of Wisconsin; and two grandsons, Patrick and Thomas. Georgia St. Col. Gunn graduated from Galena High School in Galena, Ill., University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, and from the University of Oklahoma. He was the operations officer at Tinker Air Force Base. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He married Margaret Mae Harris, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Thomas Shelton-Harris of Sapulpa, Okla., in Elizabeth City, N.C., on July 8, 1943, in First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors. Mrs. Bagwell was born Jan. 5, 1912, to J.L. and Beulah Pafford in Armstrong County. She was the youngest of their children. She graduated from Claude High School in 1929 and earned a bachelor's degree from West Texas State Teachers College in 1933. She married Ralph Bagwell on Nov. 4, 1934, in Claude. They were engaged in farming southeast of Claude and lived in Armstrong County all of their lives. She was a homemaker, active in the community and First Baptist Church. She was a charter member of Unity Study Club. Her hobbies were reading and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 13, 1998; her parents; a brother; and four sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Goin and husband, Wendell, of Garden Ridge and Nancy Gillispie and husband, Don, of Claude; five grandchildren, Melanie Haines of Maryland, Lisa Johnson of Germany, Cheryl Sherrer of Amarillo, Joe Gillispie of Lubbock and Charles Gillispie of Claude; and 12 grandchildren. She served on many committees at her church, volunteered at Coldwater Manor Nursing Home in Stratford and was an avid contributor to Sherman County Library. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and SCOT Hall. She married Clifford Ellison on Oct. 6, 1945, in Stratford. They were engaged in farming and ranching. Mr. Peeples was born in Dalhart on Feb. 11, 1941, to Henry and Catherine Peeples. He was a third generation Dalhartan, being a grandson of pioneer families Dave and Nellie Childers and W.L. and Mary Bell Peeples. David graduated from Dalhart High School in 1960. He served in the Navy from 1961 to 1963. Upon discharge, he returned to Dalhart and worked for Pete Metcalf at Dalhart Butane. He married Barbara Fowler in 1965. He established Peeples Irrigation in 1979 which continues today with his son. He enjoyed the game of golf with his many friends and took great joy and pride in his children and grandchildren. He married Rachel Garcia in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Patty Peeples Wills. She married James Zant Scott on July 30, 1929, in Clovis, N.M. She was a sales clerk for Haygoods Department Store. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, gardening and reading. She received the 4-H Leadership Spur Award, and was a member of Harmony Homemakers Extension Club and First United Methodist Church of Floydada. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Nov. 8, 1984; and a granddaughter, Danja Walding. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in Vaughan Funeral Home Chapel with C.T. Cunningham, pastor of First Baptist Church of Alamo, officiating. Mrs. Grimes was born April 27, 1929, in Avoca, Jones County and was raised in Amarillo. After 58 years of marriage, she and her husband moved to the Rio Grande Vallley in 1991. Mrs. Grimes was football queen of Birdview High School. She enjoyed square dancing, hand crafts, sewing and her family. She was employed by Amarillo Savings and Loan, Ford Motor Co. and Cordorundum Corp. She will be missed and loved by many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosco and Nina Broom; two brothers, Johnny and Tea Broom; and a sister, JoAnn Broom. Survivors include her husband, Jack; a daughter, Linda Gordon and husband, Danny; a son, Jackie Kent Grimes and his friend, Linda McGee; two grandsons, Kevin Grimes and Shane Gordon and wife, Jennifer; a granddaughter, Mandy Townsend and husband, Charles; two great-grandchildren, Brinnan and Brianna Gordon; two brothers, Jack Broom and Don Broom, both of Amarillo; a sister, Geraldine Thompson of Joplin, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 11, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sister Alfreda Folan SAN ANTONIO - Sister Alfreda Folan, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. today in St. Joseph's Chapel at Incarnate Word Retirement Community. Mass will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel. Burial will be in the Convent Cemetery by The Angelus Funeral Home. Sister Alfreda was born in County Galway, Ireland, on May 8, 1914, to Michael and Bridget Folan. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1933, professing her first vows in 1938 and perpetual vows in 1943. She received a bachelors of science degree in nursing from Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word or UIW) in 1953. She devoted 34 years to serving the sick and infirm for a number of the congregation's medical ministries including Josephine Heitkamp Hospital in St. Louis and the Texas facilities of Santa Rosa (now CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital) and St. Frances Home in San Antonio, Spohn Hospital (now CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital) in Corpus Christi, St. Anthony's Hospital (now Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital) in Amarillo, St. John's Hospital in San Angelo and St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth. Remembered as an excellent obstetrics nurse, Sister Alfreda was also a pioneer in patient advocacy, becoming one of the first patient representatives at St. Joseph's Hospital when the position was introduced there in 1975. Survivors include her sister, Nora Folan of County Galway; a niece, Bridie O'Brien and husband, John, of County Galway; a cousin, Charles Chapman of Florida; and her Sisters in Christ.
