Lee Hicks F. Lee Hicks, 73, of Amarillo died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Raines of the church officiating. Private family burial will be in West Park Cemetery in Hereford by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Hicks was born in Hereford on Nov. 15, 1931, to Barnard and Medora Hicks. His early childhood was spent in Hereford but the family moved to Las Vegas, N.M., where he graduated from High School. After graduation, he served in the Navy during the Korean War. After his tour in the Navy, he returned to Texas and attended North Texas State University in Denton. He married Karen Suhr on Aug. 29, 1998. His lifelong interests have always been in the agriculture arena. He pursued the cattle feeding industry and worked in California and Texas in various feed yard operations. Eventually he was able to launch his own operation, Lone Star Feed Yard Inc. in Happy and for 26 years this was one of his passions. His lifelong interest and hobbies included fishing, hunting, traveling and a love of a good rodeo. He was a member of Safari Club International, Dallas Safari Club and Texas Cattle Feeders Association. His awards included Commercial Cattle Feeder of the Year 1975 and he earned the Grand Slam award from the North American Sheep Hunters Association. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Hicks. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Malcolm L. Hicks and wife, Heather, of Dallas and Geoff C. Hicks and wife, Betsy, of Westfield, N.J.; two stepsons, Chad A. Suhr at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Ill., and Jared L. Suhr of Amarillo; a brother, Robert L. Hicks of San Antonio; four granddaughters, Lauren and Julia Hicks of Dallas and Ella and Georgia Hicks of Westfield, N.J. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Bassett was born June 24, 1906, in Paris to Arthur S. and Marian G. Keel. She moved to Amarillo as an infant and spent the remainder of her life here. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great- great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Slade Bassett, In 1963. Mr. Herbert was born in Amarillo on June 18, 1927, to Thomas and Annie Herbert. He graduated from Amarillo High School and entered the Navy to serve in World War II. He worked for Diamond Shamrock and retired after 35 years of service. Jack became a volunteer for the VA Hospital, where he served for five years and enjoyed helping his fellow veterans. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Frankie. She married William Newton Perkins on June 14, 1936. They shared their lives for 67 years until his death in 2003. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; two brothers; and two sisters. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Llano Cemetery with Air Force military rites by Altus Air Force Base. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Rothkrug was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from Erasmus Hall in 1939. He served in the Army Air Corps as a B-24 navigator in the 98th and 43rd Bomber Groups, flying 80 missions in both the European and Pacific theaters, including the historic Ploesti bombing raid on Aug. 1, 1943. He married Patricia Burns of Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 5, 1946. He served in the Air Force for 22 years, retiring in 1963 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mr. Rothkrug earned master's degrees in business administration and history from West Texas State University. He owned and operated an accounting business, Whitehill Taxkeeping Systems of Amarillo. He taught for several years at Texas State Technical Institute and enjoyed substitute teaching in the Amarillo public schools. He was a member of Retired Air Force Officers Association and International B-24 Liberator Club. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mary Harrison of Simpsonville, S.C., and Ann Warnecke and Ellen Herring, both of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Whitehead, D.C., 58, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, in Grapevine. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Tubbs, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens by Morrison Funeral Directors. Dr. Whitehead was born to R.N. and Margaret Whitehead on Aug. 7, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa. Upon his father's graduation from Palmer College of Chiropractic, the family moved to Eastland and then on to Dumas in 1952. John graduated from Dumas High School and studied at Amarillo College and West Texas State University. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he enrolled in Palmer College of Chiropractic and graduated in 1969. He practiced chiropractic with his father and subsequently opened his own private practice. In 1986, Dr. Whitehead moved to San Antonio and then later to Grapevine-Southlake, where he had been practicing chiropractic until his death. He served on numerous boards and committees, both inside the chiropractic profession as well as in the public sector. Some of his most cherished were South Central region director for Palmer College Alumni Association, Texas Chiropractic Association board of directors and Texas Chiropractic College board of regents. He had been an active member with Texas Chiropractic Association for 35 years. In his younger years, he was active in coaching little league baseball and was involved in fundraising for renovations to the Dumas YMCA. He was an active member of Dumas Noon Lions Club, where he proudly enjoyed cooking and serving hamburgers at the annual Dogie Days Celebration. He spent his professional life dedicated to the care of his patients and his personal life dedicated to his family. He was beloved by his patients and family and was blessed with a brilliant sense of humor as well as compassion for his fellow man. Friends, family and patients will remember he was quick with a joke and a smile and unwavering in his quest for health for his patients. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie; two sons, Dr. Todd Whitehead and wife, Gerri, of Amarillo and Cpl. George Saenz serving in the Marine Corps, of College Station; a daughter, Erin Pingelton and husband, Jerod, of Dumas; five grandchildren, Ryan, Raegan and Reed Whitehead, all of Amarillo, and David and Jordan Pingelton, both of Dumas; two sisters, Judy Whitehead of Colleyville and Elizabeth "Betty" Levitt and husband, Gene, of Amarillo; and many nieces and nephews that he cherished. He lived in Amarillo before moving to Hereford 41 years ago. He served in the Army during the Korean War. While he lived in Amarillo, he worked for Smelter and Brown Drilling. When he moved to Hereford, he owned and operated Hereford Cesspool Service for 41 years. Mr. Pruitt was a member of Community Church in Hereford. He married Virginia Dale Stork, who preceded him in death in 1969 in Hereford. He later married Loree Mildred Ivins in 1971. He was preceded in death by his father, Dude Pruitt; his mother, Wilma Pruitt; three brothers, Tom Pruitt, Willis Pruitt and Jimmy Pruitt; a sister, Wanda Pruitt; and two grandsons, Brandon Shane Caster and Todd Lee Conner. She worked for Culberson-Stowers Chevrolet and Tejas Feeders as a bookkeeper for several years before her health caused her to retire. She moved to Lamar to be near her son. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Bunch- Roberts Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was a resident of the Guymon area since age 8. He was a meter reader and lineman for Southwestern Public Service. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 10, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Vernon J. Sand Vernon J. Sand, 75, of Canyon died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Ann's Catholic Church with the Rev. Phu Phan officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Holley Funeral Home. Mr. Sand was born in Moorhead, Minn., attending a one-room school and Ada High School while growing up on his grandfather's farm near Ada, Minn. He served in the Air Force as a radar maintenance technician from 1950 to 1953. He then received an associate's degree in applied science in radio and television technology from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1955. After graduation from MSOE he worked as a technical writer at several different companies around the country over a period of 35 years. He retired from Texas Instruments at Austin in 1991. During the first few years of his retirement, Mr. Sand wrote and published a book titled, "The Life and Times of Vernon and Renee Sand and Related Families," which is in several libraries around the country. He married Renee Lassauge in 1954 in Milwaukee, while attending MSOE. They had no children. They moved from Austin to the Palo Duro Retirement Village in Canyon in 1995. Survivors include his wife; two aunts, Marie Vilmo and Minnie Sip of Ada; and two uncles, Marvin Geiselhart of Halstad, Minn., and Donald Geiselhart of Fargo, N.D. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 10, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary Jane Reeves Mary Jane Reeves, 75, of Canyon died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry L. Meyer and the Rev. David Lowrie officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Reeves was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Denver to Joseph and Mary Jane Guiteras. She grew up in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Santiago, Chile, where she attended The American College. She graduated from Stephen's College and received a master of arts in Spanish from the University of Colorado. For three summers she was in charge of the language school at the University of Colorado and also studied Russian at Middlebury College in Vermont. She spent a year at the University of Innsbruck in Austria as a Fullbright Scholar and attended the universities of Madrid and Santander, Spain. She returned to Denver to teach languages at East High School. It was during this time that she met John Reeves. They were married in August 1959. Mary Jane continued to teach in the Denver Public Schools until 1970, when she, John and their three children moved to Canyon. She taught languages at Canyon High School, and for several summers she and John took groups of students to Europe. Mary Jane taught in the education department of West Texas State University for several years before accepting a position as gifted and talented coordinator at Region 16 Service Center, helping area school districts develop and strengthen their gifted and talented education programs. Among her many awards and distinctions was being named Texas State Educator of the Year. She retired in 1996 to spend more time traveling and to be with her children and grandchildren. She continued to tutor at Lakeview Elementary School, to help with Odyssey of the Mind program and to judge area speech tournaments. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1997 and fought a valiant fight that made her family proud. She shared with her family her lifelong love of traveling, learning, music and languages. The family would like to express their gratitude to the many people who gave their love and support during her last days. "Jim" Barron III, 57, of Angel Fire, N.M., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Trinity Church chapel with the Rev. Paul Jantzen officiating. Private burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park by Resthaven Funeral Home. Mr. Barron was born in Lubbock, raised in Spur, graduated from New Mexico Military Institute and attended Texas Tech University. Mr. Barron was involved in ranching in Texas and New Mexico, and as a ranch broker he sold ranches for Bennett & Barron Land Company and Barron & Company. He was active in local and national cattle organizations including Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and National Cattlemens Beef Association. He attended Trinity Church in Lubbock, Liberty Rock Church in Ralls and Angel Fire Baptist Church in Angel Fire. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, James S. Barron in 1996. Kendall Gelsthorpe, 27, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. Services will be at noon today in Winterrowd-Hagi Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Upchurch officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Ms. Gelsthorpe was born Oct. 14, 1977, in Amarillo, Texas. She attended Illinois Community College in Oglesby, receiving an associate's degree in science.
