Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Bankhead officiating. Private family burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. The family is thankful to our Father in Heaven that our mother died peacefully at home in her sleep. Mrs. Whittenburg was born Aug. 19, 1919, to Louis Palma McKee and Jewel Porter McKee on the family farm in Eastern New Mexico. She graduated from high school at 14 years of age and attended college at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales and West Texas State University in Canyon. At 17 years of age, as a senior with one semester of college remaining, she married Roy Robert Whittenburg in her parents' home on Feb. 14, 1937. Her death on Valentine's Day, 68 years later to the day, marks a very fitting conclusion to a life devoted to her husband and children, exemplified by her untiring leadership and guidance in all her children's educational endeavors and their many other activities as well as her hands-on loving care of the five generations touched by her life. Mrs. Whittenburg served on the executive committee of the board of Girlstown, USA (now part of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch) and served on the board and as president of Amarillo Bankers Wives Club. She was a member of Amarillo Junior League, Amarillo Council of Garden Clubs, Christian Women's Association and First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 29, 1980; an infant grandson; and an infant great-granddaughter. Survivors include seven children, Evelyn Coltrin and husband, Don, of Houston, Anne Johnston and husband, Murray, of San Antonio, and George Whittenburg and wife, Ann, Mack Whittenburg, Burk Whittenburg and wife, Carol, Lois Rowley and husband, George, and Roy Whittenburg Jr., all of Amarillo; a sister, Lois McKee King of Bartlesville, Okla.; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Bill and Mike Dees, her sons, officiating. Ms. Dees was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Tucumcari, N.M., to Emma and William Melvin Gambill. She married Beecher Dees on Dec. 17, 1932, in Frederick, Okla. Throughout her life she loved to oil paint. She was a loving mother and grandmother and instilled a love of music in all who knew her. She was a loving wife for 66 years and was a sweet Christian woman. She attended Gardener Street Church of Christ in Borger, the Church of Christ in Ozark, Ark., and Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; a son, Val Dees in 1999; and a granddaughter, Pam Dees in 1976. Burial will be at 1 p.m. today in Miami Cemetery in Miami. Mr. Barnes moved to Miami in 1974 from Tarzan. He graduated from Gotebo High School in Gotebo, Okla., in 1953. Mr. Barnes then served in the Army in Germany. He retired from Cabot Corp. in 1987 after 25 years. Mr. Barnes was a beekeeper and produced and sold honey. He also bred and exhibited Quarter Horses for many years. He loved going to the lake and fishing. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Miami. He was preceded in death by a brother, Theron "Sonny" Barnes in 2001 in Amarillo; and his father, Sanford O. Barnes in Hobart, Okla., in 1988. Ron was a mechanical engineer with Pantex. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He will be missed greatly and never forgotten. Amarillo Globe-News, Feb. 18, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elizabeth "Thelma" Phillips Elizabeth "Thelma" Phillips, 87, of Amarillo died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in North Amarillo Church of Christ with Dalton Key, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mrs. Phillips was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Caldwell to Horace and Cora Hall. She attended school in Calvert, where she was a star basketball player. Thelma had worked as a chair car attendant for the Santa Fe Railway Co. and a food supervisor for Calvert High School. She lived in Marlin, Amarillo and Los Angeles. She was the first female streamline street car operator for the City of Los Angeles and, while there, she also owned and operated a restaurant. After moving back to Amarillo, she worked for a prominent pioneer ranching family. Later, she moved to Navasota on the Mayes-Hall homestead, where she and her two sisters operated the Three Sisters Rodeo Arena. Failing health brought her back to Amarillo to be in the care of her loving daughter, Billie Gasaway. Survivors include three sons, Robert Hall and wife, Mary Lou, of Albuquerque, N.M., Choyce Phillips of Waco and Hollie Phillips and wife, Brenda, of Navasota; a devoted daughter, Billie Gasaway of Amarillo; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces. He lived in Red Springs for 45 years before relocating to Amarillo 25 years ago. He retired as a security guard from Pantex after 23 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, having served his country in the Army. Loyd was also a Mason and a member of Western Cowpunchers. Mr. Shuffield was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His family and friends will miss him greatly. Mrs. Wilson was born in Estancia, N.M., on May 5, 1933. She had been employed in the accounting department of Fort Bliss in El Paso. Chad Horton, chaplain at Bivins Memorial Nursing Home, officiating. Melissa Fields, her granddaughter, will read the eulogy. Burial will be in Groom Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Fields was born in Jack County on May 28, 1912, to James and Bonnie Helton. She had five older brothers and five younger brothers. Nettie grew up in Brice Area, south of Clarendon. Her family moved to Groom, where she graduated from Groom High School. After graduation she lived in Amarillo and attended Draughns Business College. On March 3, 1934, Nettie married Charles L. Fields in Groom. They were married 61 years before Charlie passed away in 1995. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Groom, held many positions in Eastern Star, and was one of the charter members of Thimblette Needle Club of Groom. Nettie loved gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting and knitting. She was infamous for making Christmas stockings that she gave to many friends and family members. She had a fascination with card games with her favorite being bridge. She loved her five grandchildren and four great- grandchildren dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and nine brothers, Bill, Tom, Newt, Ernest, Nath, Allen, Joe, Harrell and Claude Helton. He married Flora Lovato on May 14, 1956, in Portales, N.M. He was a self-employed welder and had lived in Dumas for 38 years. He was a member of Templo Elim Assamblea de Dios. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gilbert Lucero, Casey Lucero and Arthur Lucero; his parents; a sister, Valentina Lucero; and a son, Ralph Richard Lucero in August 2004. Mrs. Rutledge was born on May 11, 1920, in Lipscomb County to the late Mr. C.H. Vaught and Mrs. Viola Hinsdell Vaught. She attended grammar school at Liberty School in Lipscomb County. She was a graduate of Canadian High School. She then attended Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. She married Jack Rutledge in May 1942 in Arnett, Okla. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1981. She then married Byron Rutledge in July 1998 in Canadian. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was a longtime member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Lipscomb County and later First Baptist Church in Canadian. She was also a member of the Dorcas Sunday school class, Women's Missionary Union, delivered Meals on Wheels and was volunteered as a poll worker in local and national elections. Survivors include two sons, Jack Rutledge of Canadian and Carl Rutledge and wife, Bettye, of Flatonia; two daughters, Mary Colson and husband, Bill, of Dallas and Beth Rutledge Morgan of Canadian; two brothers, Bruce Vaught of Baldwin, Mo., and Bill Vaught of Kennewick, Wash.; six grandchildren, Carla Schaub of Lampasas, Jennie Ruth Rutledge of Georgetown, Leah Colson of Seattle, Amanda Heier of San Francisco, and Chaz Morgan and Joe Morgan, both of Canadian; four great-grandchildren, Kendal Conner and Jack Conner, both of Lampasas, Sabine Heier of San Francisco and Ellie Austin of Seattle; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially Ollie Rogers of Canadian, who was her dear friend for more than 60 years. Mr. Porter was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Enid, Okla. He graduated in 1941 from Spearman High School and attended the University of Colorado. He married Betty Douglas on June 25, 1954, in Gateway, Ark. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Spearman. He was former president of Spearman ISD board of trustees. He served in the Navy in China during World War II. He worked in Kairos Prison Ministry and was a member of American Ag Movement and Farmers Union. He was a farmer. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Doug Porter of Bourbonnais, Ill., William Porter of Fargo, N.D., and Raymie Porter of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two sisters, Elise Porter of Amarillo and Roseanne Haas of Pocatello, Idaho; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Stephens Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Cathy Hamrick officiating. Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo. Leota had lived in Spavinaw since 1978, moving from Amarillo. She was a homemaker. She married Blake Miller on Feb. 8, 1940, in Houston. Leota was of the Presbyterian faith and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing bridge. She was a wonderful, caring and loving wife and mother. She never failed to make a house a warm, inviting home. Leota devoted her life to helping friends and loved ones enjoy their lives and succeed in their personal endeavors. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 28, 1998. Survivors include a son, John M. Miller and wife, Gabi, of Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Medora Ann Williams and husband, Bob, of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
