Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church in Happy with the Rev. Tom Stribling and the Rev. Mike Kuhlman of the Arena Church in Happy officiating. Private family burial will be in Wayside Cemetery in Wayside by Holley Funeral Home of Canyon. Mr. Hamblen was born April 13, 1928, in Canyon to Alfred Sterling Hamblen and Eutha Mae Strawn Hamblen. He married Geraldine Darst on Oct. 2, 1954, in Canyon. He was retired from Swisher County Feedlot and was a longtime aviator. Mr. Hamblen served in the Army in Korea in the 279th Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Happy. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Eugene Hamblen. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Hamblen of Happy and Tracy Hamblen of Dallas; two daughters, Vicki Hamblen of Happy and Cathy Ledford and husband, Kenny, of Amarillo; two sisters, Harvey Canafax of Davis, Calif., and Carol Kilchriste of Las Vegas; and two brothers, Stewart "Guy" Hamblen and William H. "Sonny" Hamblen, both of Canyon. The family suggests memorials be to Arena Church, P.O. Box 56, Happy, TX 79042. "Pat" Messenger, 82, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Houston. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Channing Cemetery in Channing with the Rev. George Chambers of the United Methodist Church of Channing officiating. Arrangements are by Pat H. Foley and Co. Funeral Home. Mr. Messenger was born July 12, 1922, in Channing to Clyde and Helen Messenger. He attended school at Middlewell Community and Dumas High School. Pat enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in Italy during World War II. He married Victoria Skelton of Channing on Oct. 17, 1953. Pat was a land appraiser. He worked for Texas Veterans Land Board and Equitable Insurance. Pat also served on the board of directors for the Amarillo Production Credit Association. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Jerry Messenger; and a sister, Polly Goettsche. Survivors include a son, Jay Skelton of Houston; three sisters, Marcellete Ledgerwood of Dumas, Virginia Frazier of Amarillo and Beverly Barber of Portland; a brother, Neil Messenger of Garden City, Kan.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He lived in Amarillo most of his life. He graduated from Caprock High School. Mr. Wyble married Tammy Bell in 1999. He moved to Austin in 2002. He was a self-employed paint contractor for many years. Mr. Wyble was a member of New Light Christian Center Church in Austin. "Bill" Sorenson William D. "Bill" Sorenson, 83, of Amarillo died Sunday, May 15, 2005. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Davlyn Duesterhaus, chaplain at BSA Hospice, officiating. Mr. Sorenson was born in Omaha, Neb., and married Dj in 1942. He served in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was project manager for FAO, United Nations. Mr. Sorenson also briefly worked at the Amarillo Public Library and was a published author. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Burma L. Kroger and husband, Elwyn, of Lincoln, Neb., and Elizabeth J. Sorenson of Amarillo; a son, Timothy W. Sorenson and wife, Marie, of Dallas; six grandchildren, Isha, Bonnar, Megan, Dax, Tyler and Todd; and three great-grandchildren, Jegan, Keegan and Cathrynn Rebecca. Hughes St. Mrs. Terry was born in Ballinger on Dec. 30, 1926, to the late Robert and Ada Turner. She was a committed and dedicated member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a "Golden Girl," and a member of the mission and Sunday school ministry. Survivors include two sons, Williams Turner of Tucson, Ariz., and Bobby Terry of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven daughters, Maxine Reeves, Frankie Tinner and Gail Terry, all of Amarillo, Linda Terry of Pensacola, Fla., and Florence Carter, Jessie Westmoreland and Betty Terry, all of Colorado Springs; 29 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hays D. Wakefield Hays D. Wakefield, 75, of Amarillo died Saturday, May 14, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in South Georgia Baptist Church with Sherman Eastland officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Wakefield was born in Plaska and was a lifelong resident of Amarillo. He attended Amarillo High School. He married Jackie Eastland on March 6, 1964, in Amarillo. He went to work for Santa Fe Railway when he was 15 years old and retired as a railway supervisor-agent in 1987. After retirement he became involved in woodworking. He owned and operated a store in Western Plaza as well as Lizzie's Heart Things in Fritch. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Cash Wakefield and Jewel Hays Wakefield; a brother, Wayne Wakefield; and a nephew, Quain Palmer. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rock Wakefield and Derek Wakefield, both of Amarillo; two sisters, Raydell Palmer and Darlene Chesshir, both of Amarillo; a brother, Deral Wakefield of Denton; five grandchildren, Chad, Quincy, Khaki, Tennessee and Lizzie; and a great-grandson, Cash. Hughes St. Mrs. Barnes was born June 16, 1927, to Jim and Mary Crane in Clarksville. She married Leon Barnes in 1943 and they had eight children. She enjoyed traveling, gossiping with family and people watching. She was very spirited, giving and was loved by all. She was preceded in death by her husband; and a son, Leon Barnes Jr. I. Survivors include two sisters, Anna Mae Barnes of St. Louis, Mo., and Katherine Hearon of Denver; her children, Donald Hearon of Las Vegas, Lena Cofer of Fort Worth, Nora Jackson of Perris, Calif., R.V. Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Victory Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery East by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Slane was born in Muskogee, Okla., and had been a resident of Amarillo since 1968. He was a 1968 graduate of Amarillo High School. He married Marilyn Janet McGaha in Amarillo on Feb. 13, 1982. He was a truck driver for many years, working for Borden's Transport of Texas and also drove a school bus for Amarillo Independent School District. Mr. Slane was a published poet. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Megan JonNelle Slane of Amarillo; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Slane of Guymon, Okla.; a brother, Dana Michael Slane and wife, Charlene, of Guymon; two brothers-in-law, Herman Mark McGaha and wife, Beth, of Amarillo and Covey Joe McGaha and wife, Debbie, of Owasso, Okla. Bobby Bradshaw of the Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Cannon was born Dec. 3, 1909, in Marlow, Okla., to Louie and Mantha Williams Rogers. She worked for Underwood's for several years, and later was the first manager of Furrs Delicatessen in Amarillo. She retired at age 62 after years of service. She was a faithful servant of God, and loved her family with passion. She was a member of Harvest Life Center Assembly of God. The family would like to give a special thanks to Amarillo Nursing Home for their care and love to Leao and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven sisters; six brothers; a daughter, Juanita Foster; and a granddaughter, Suzanne Oakley. Mrs. Grewell was born Dec. 20, 1917, to Minnie Louise and Forest Lee Hall in Milford. She graduated from Memphis High School and attended WTSU. She married C.S. McGuire and was later remarried to Chuck Grewell. She was an employee of Hugo Lowenstern Co., a payroll clerk at Reese Airforce Base in Lubbock, and a librarian aide at Amarillo High School. She was a member of Unity Church on the High Plains. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Casida and husband, Jerry; a grandson, Chris Casida; and other survivors include Noel and Pam Clifton, Gary and Linda Grewell, Dwight Carver and Vicki Clifton. Mrs. Gonzales was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Summerfield to Cruz Luna and Lena Aragon Luna. She married Romaldo Gonzales on March 7, 1945, in Canyon. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Helen Hernandez of Canyon; four sons, David Augustine Gonzales of Pine Bluff, Ark., Joseph and Raphael Gonzales, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Martin Gonzales of Canyon; two brothers, Louis Luna of Canyon and Eugene Alderete of Amarillo; two sisters, Stella Andrada of Canyon and Lois Alcorta of Amarillo; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Green was born Feb. 28, 1934, in Brownfield. He had been a Dumas resident since 1954. He married Oma Lee Emery on Nov. 28, 1953, in Brownfield. He retired from the State of Texas Highway Department in 1994 after 39 years in maintenance. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jerry Lee Green and wife, Patty, and James "Sweetie" Green and wife, Laurie, all of Dumas, and Randal Green of Amarillo; a daughter, Sharon Kay Bassham of Dumas; a brother, Troy Green and wife, Doris, of Seminole; a sister, Ouida Howell of Brownfield; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Harshman was born March 31, 1951, in Peru, Ind. He married Margarita Harshman on Jan. 19, 1992, in Oklahoma City. Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 30, 1942, in Los Angeles. She had lived in the area since 1949, moving from El Paso. She graduated from Perryton High School in 1960. She was a postal clerk for the post office in Perryton for 36 years. She was a member of the Crisis Center board of directors and Perryton Archeology Club. Kristine loved nothing better than getting in the kitchen and cooking lots of good food for her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook. She was "Nana" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved them all. She was preceded in death by her father, Terry C. Yates.
