Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Central Church of Christ with Dan Bouchelle, Bob Crass and Glenn Walton officiating. Private family burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Sneed was born in Yellow Mound in Eastland County on Jan. 11, 1922. He was surrounded by siblings - seven brothers and two sisters. All the boys were at least 6 feet 4 inches tall, with Paul reaching 6 feet 7 inches. The family eventually moved to the West Texas town of Idalou, where the Idalou Wildcats enjoyed an era of basketball success centered around the Sneed brothers. Paul graduated from Idalou High School and went on to Abilene Christian University with a basketball scholarship. His college career was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army. He served for 18 months in France and Europe and then was reassigned to the Army Men's Chorale. For the last 18 months of his service, he toured with the Chorale singing for U.S. troops and foreign leaders. The most memorable event was when the Chorale performed for Charles de Gaulle with Mickey Rooney serving as the emcee. Paul was decorated with the Bronze Star. After the Army, Paul returned to ACU to complete his college studies. It was then that he met the love of his life, Judy Beth Simpson. He and Judy were married on Aug. 17, 1947, in the parlor of ACU's Zellner Hall. Earning his bachelor's degree in education in 1948, Paul began his teaching career with Galena Park ISD in that fall. He taught algebra and coached basketball for 12 years. Paul also earned his master's degree in education while working at Galena Park. It was at Galena Park that he served as a deacon at Galena Park Church of Christ, where he coordinated the education program. That experience paved the way to his full-time career in ministry, which would span 45 years. Paul's first ministry job was with North Loop Church of Christ in El Paso. He worked there for two years before moving to Lubbock, where he worked with Vandelia Village Church of Christ for three years. At Vandelia, he served as the minister of education as well as the interim preacher for one year. In 1965, he moved to Amarillo to work with Central Church of Christ. He served as the minister of education, but is most remembered for his compassionate ministry as he visited hospitals and served bereaved families for almost 40 years. During his hospital ministry, he worked with Sister Olivia at St. Anthony's Hospital in establishing the very first Amarillo hospice. In 1988, Paul retired from full-time work at Central, but continued his ministry of hospital visitation. At this time, he also worked part-time with Schooler-Gordon Funeral Home and later with Schooler Funeral Home. Paul's presence with people and families during times of illness, pain or sadness is what has endeared him to thousands of people. There are countless families that have been blessed by Paul as he was on hand for baptisms, marriages and funerals. In February this year, Paul entered the hospital. From the hospital, he moved to Bivins Memorial Nursing Home, where he spent his last two months. Melvin was, in my eyes, the strongest, most handsome and funniest man that I have had the honor of having as my Dad. Melvin Frank Belt was born to H.A. "Jack" Belt and Nora Belt in Kirkland, Childress County, Texas, on July 22, 1924. He spent most of his young life working on ranches and cotton farms in and around the Kirkland area and around Amarillo, Texas. Dad met my mother, Jean Juett when he was 9 years old and she was 10, when his dad went to work on the farm owned by my mother's family just outside Amarillo. Dad joined the Marine Corps during World War II and fought in the Pacific. One of his proudest moments was when he witnessed the infamous raising of the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima. He told of the tremendous cries of joy that rang out when the small flag rose and how, a few hours later, the larger flag was raised. When Dad returned home on leave during the war, he married Jean Juett on March 9, 1946. Dad always felt fortunate that the war ended before he had to return to duty. Dad and Mom spent all of their free time hunting, fishing and camping together. Dad went to work for the Bureau of Mines at the Helium Plant in Amarillo in 1957. He transferred to the Helium Plant in Shiprock and moved his family in February 1962. He worked for the Bureau of Mines until the closing of the Shiprock Plant, transferring to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he retired in 1990 with 35 years of government service.
