Garner Robert E. Garner, 67, of Amarillo died Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Graveside services were held Saturday in Sharp Cemetery in Rockdale. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo with Dr. Jim Bankhead and Max Brown officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Garner was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Milam County. A graduate of Sharp High School, Garner received his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University and his law degree from Baylor University School of Law. His 45-year law practice began in Lubbock, and in 1977, he moved to Amarillo. He was a partner of Whittenburg, Whittenburg, Garner & Stein at the time of his death. Garner was certified as a civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and certified in civil trial and personal injury law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. In December 2003, he was honored by the Panhandle Trial Lawyers Association as its first recipient of the Temple Houston Award in recognition of his skills and successes as a trial lawyer. During his career, Bob Garner represented people of all walks of life and various businesses. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Walden Garner; his children, Synde Garner and Ronald Matschek, Robert Kyle Garner, and Jennifer Garner and Tim Nicholson, all of Amarillo, and Jan Garner Tankersley of Lubbock; eight grandchildren, Carter, Kelsey, Camron and Casen Matschek, Avrey and Allye Tankersley and Dolan and Margaret Nicholson; and five sisters, Mildred Holcomb and Martha Garth and husband, Don, all of Lubbock, Bonnie Dark and husband, Clayton, of Lufkin, Helen Abel and husband, Henry, of Buckholtz and Beverly Key and husband, Norman, of Austin. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176-0001. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eugene "Gene" Jenkins Eugene "Gene" Jenkins, 59, of Amarillo died Friday, May 27, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Bill Meyer of Victory Church officiating. Mr. Jenkins died Friday after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Jenkins was born Nov. 14, 1945, in Camden, S.C. He was a veteran in the Army, serving in Vietnam. He was a fuel transport driver and a Lutheran. He married Beverly Christopher on Sept. 24, 1965, in Hampton, S.C. Mr. Jenkins was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife; two sons Bryan E. Jenkins and Christopher W. Jenkins and wife, Trena, all of Amarillo; two daughters, Cynthia D. Post and husband, Robert, of Amarillo and Kimberly L. Harris of Arlington; his mother, Sara Lou Murphy Jenkins of Elkhart, Kan.; two brothers, Raymond Jenkins and wife, Judy, of Elkhart and Allen Jenkins of Puyallup, Wash.; and seven granddaughters. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Dr. Charles Jones officiating. Mr. Sanders was born Aug. 16, 1935, the son of Cecil and Bell Sanders of Mineral Springs, Ark. He moved to Amarillo in 1955 while serving in the Air Force, later transferring to the Army. After active duty, he remained in the Army Reserve, retiring in 1995. George was employed at BWXT Pantex and served as secretary/treasurer of the Guards Union, retiring after 26 years. While raising four sons, George was involved in Kids, Inc., coaching many winning teams. He was also a member of the Southern Basketball Officials Association and traveled to many area Panhandle towns refereeing basketball. George married Donna Gilbert of Amarillo on July 17, 1993, and after retirement, they spent several years traveling and living part-time in South Texas. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Mike and wife, Pam, of Lewisville, and Perry and wife, Brenda, Kyle and wife, Rhonda, and Craig and wife, Tamra, all of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with Dr. Johnny Funderburg, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Call was a longtime resident of Pampa, where she and her husband owned and operated Call's Photography Studio for 33 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Business and Professional Women's Sunday School Class. Box 621, Pampa, TX 79066-0621. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Margaret Helen Pyron Sparks PANHANDLE - Margaret Helen Pyron Sparks, 83, formerly of Panhandle, died Friday, May 27, 2005, in Malakoff. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Panhandle Cemetery with Barbara Nichols, youth minister, officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mrs. Sparks was born March 8, 1922, in Amarillo to Chester and Ida Belle Tucker Pyron Sr. She graduated from Panhandle High School in 1939 and Texas Christian University in 1943 with a degree in public school music. She served in World War II as a civil air traffic controller. She married Nolan Sparks on March 30, 1945, in Panhandle. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church of Panhandle, where she was both a pianist and choir member. She was a charter member of the Athenaeum Womens Club in Panhandle. She loved her piano, dancing, bridge, golfing and spending time with all her childhood friends from Panhandle. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Chester M. Pyron Jr.; and a daughter, Pattie Sue Sparks. Survivors include her husband of Star Harbor, and a son, Chester Sparks of Star Harbor. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere Dr. Prentis Byon Vaughn MIDLAND - Dr. Prentis Byon Vaughn, 54, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Vaughan's Funeral Home Chapel in Boerne with Bubba Stahl, pastor, and Tom Lanier, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Mission Park North in San Antonio. Born in Kingsville on Sept. 6, 1950, Dr. Vaughn was the son of Tip Herndon Vaughn and Lorena Stahl Vaughn. A former resident of Boerne, Byon and his family had lived in Midland for two years, where they were members of Christ Church Midland (Anglican Communion). Dr. Vaughn was an emergency room physician at Odessa Regional Hospital and a physician at West Loop Family Medicine. He was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (fellow), the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Ector County Medical Society. Dr. Vaughn received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1975. Commissioned as a captain in the Army in 1973, he was the first graduate of an emergency medicine residency program in the state of Texas. Promoted to the rank of major in 1978, he was honorably discharged in 1983. During his military service, he received the Expert Field Medicine Badge and the Flight Surgeon's Badge and was the founder and program director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at Darnell Army Hospital, Fort Hood. He was also the medical director for numerous other EMS organizations around the state. Among his many honors, he received the Surgeon General's Physician Recognition Award as Outstanding Physician of the Year in 1980; the Army Soldier's Medal in 1981; the Louis Livingston Seaman Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States in 1981; the Army Achievement Medal in 1982; and the Army Meritorious Service Medal in 1982. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Charles and Tip Vaughn. Survivors include his wife, Laura Armstrong Vaughn; four children, Kelly Vaughn Tomasini and husband, Justin, Brett Vaughn and wife, Niki, Chelsea Vaughn Hines and husband, James, and Zachary Vaughn; three grandchildren, Justin Tomasini Jr., Austin Tomasini and Loring Tomasini; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kelye and Mark Odell; a sister-in-law, Nancy Trant Vaughn; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park in Mesa. Arrangements are by Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park & Funeral Care in Mesa. Mr. Johnson was born in Chicago to Martin and Mathilda Johnson on Oct. 3, 1928. He spent all of his childhood years in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in engineering, followed by his Professional Engineers Certificate. In 1952, he served in the Army, where he was sent to helicopter school. Upon his honorable discharge in 1954, he returned to Chicago, where he obtained a lifelong position with NGPL of America. Dale retired to Amarillo, Texas, in 1988. In 2004, Dale and Mary moved to Mesa, where he will be laid to rest. He and Mary were married 46 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, Darryl and wife, MaryAnne; a daughter, Vicki; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Carly, Brandi, Steven and Lisa. The family suggests memorials be to the heart or lung associations. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Mexico Herman Joe Carlson TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Herman Joe Carlson, 67, died Friday, May 27, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Dunn Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Carlson was born Dec. 26, 1937, in Fort Madison, Ill. He had been a resident of Tucumcari since 1945. He graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1956 and was a member of the Rattler Hall of Fame. He served in the Navy for four years as a submariner on the USS Raton submarine. He was a volunteer fireman for Rural District 1 and 2 for more than 30 years. He was a member of Center Street United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman "Swede" Carlson and Madeline Carlson. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; three daughters, Alicia Greenwood and husband, Paul, of Artesia, Suzie Howsmon and husband, Michael, of Bushland, Texas, and Cristy Henderson and husband, Shannon, of Canyon, Texas; seven grandchildren, Caitlyn, Kelli and Tyler Greenwood, Noah and Ryan Howsmon and Carlee and Scott Henderson; and a sister, Charlotte Williams and husband, James, of Los Lunas. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alma Allen CLAYTON, N.M. - Alma Allen, 82, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines with the Rev. Richard Parker, pastor, and Jerry Valenzuela, youth pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Des Moines Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mrs. Allen was born Dec. 1, 1922, in Des Moines to Clint Snider and Mahala Helen Bryson Snider. A lifelong resident of Union County, she worked for 17 years as a cafeteria cook and as town mayor in Des Moines. Survivors include a son, Clinton D. Allen of Canon City, Colo.; two daughters, Bobbie Like of Clovis and Sarah Leis of Des Moines; a sister, Hada Templeton of Hendersonville, Tenn.; three brothers, Ernest Snider of Penrose, Colo., John Snider of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Jerry Snider of Albuquerque; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
