Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with Jim Blackmon, minister of Church of Christ in Hereford, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Arnold was born in Lockney. She married Buford Arnold in July 1933. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1985. She was a homemaker and was a member of Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Kerry Arnold and wife, Sharon, of Amarillo; two brothers, James C. Shaw of California and Derrel Shaw of Houston; three grandchildren, Steve Arnold, Chris Arnold and Angie Hickey; and three great- grandchildren, Nicole Arnold, Cora Hickey and Darby Hickey. Box 950 Amarillo, TX 79176. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Lee Saylor Jim Lee Saylor, 43, of Amarillo, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Gruver. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Saylor died Thursday after a lengthy illness in Gruver. Jim was born May 19, 1962, in Amarillo. Being an Army brat, he attended many schools, but his favorite was in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was involved in drama classes in high school and loved music. He taught himself to play drums and was teaching his son, Zachary, also. He served in the Navy before making his home in Amarillo in 1982. Jim was a devoted and loving father. He will always be loved and missed. Survivors include his wife, Dana; three children, Zachary, Roman and Mariah; his father, Robert Saylor of Amarillo; a brother, Robert A. Saylor of Amarillo; two sisters, Connie Lobaugh of Burkburnett and Christy Craft of Amarillo; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, Olivia's Angels, P.O. The family will be at 4009 Tucson Drive. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Don A. Smith GROOM - Don A. Smith, 71, died Thursday, July 7, 2005. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Groom Cemetery with the Rev. Weldon Rives of Groom United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo. Mr. Smith was born in Hereford on June 30, 1934, to Orville and Nettie Smith. He graduated from Stinnett High School. He married Margie Ehrhart on July 26, 1955, in Clayton, N.M. Mr. Smith was a self-employed farmer and rancher in Groom. He was a member of Groom United Methodist Church. He had a great love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was avid about attending their sports activities. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 27, 2001. Survivors include three daughters, Vicki Hammons and husband, Eddie, of Amarillo and Sandra Britten and husband, Jigger, and Sherri Wieberg and husband, Nathan, all of Groom; two sisters, Reba Thompson of Stinnett and Barbara Chumley of Stratford; four grandchildren, Jamie Smith of Amarillo and Trey Britten, Staci Treadwell and Maddie Wieberg, all of Groom; and four great-grandchildren, David, Tyler, Hali and Graci. Box 217, Groom, TX 79039. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alvin Ward Wingo SHAMROCK - Alvin Ward Wingo, 69, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Wheeler. Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Lowe, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery in Wheeler by Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Wingo was born Dec. 2, 1935, to Ward Wingo and Iola Forrest Wingo. Mr. Wingo grew up and graduated from high school in Vici, Okla. He married Delma Andrews on Oct. 11, 1957, in Rocky, Okla. He moved to the Shamrock area in February 2000 from Forney. Mr. Wingo had been a State Farm Insurance agent for 35 years in the Dallas area. He was a member and very active in the Texas Independent Bird Hunters Association and the National Shoot to Retrieve Association. He was an avid bird hunter, was involved with field trials and in later years, he enjoyed golfing. He was a 1958 graduate of Oklahoma City University and a member of the Marine Corps Reserves. Mr. Wingo was a member of First United Methodist Church of Heath from 1972 to 2000 and was very active in many offices and the church choir. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Susan Carol Wingo on Dec. 9, 1991. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Alvin Ward Wingo Jr. of Forney and Eldon Ray Wingo of Amarillo; two brothers, Keith Wingo of Oklahoma City and Don Wingo of Seagraves; a sister, Kathryn Epperson of Oklahoma City; and four grandchildren, Keenan Ward Wingo, Wesley Ray Wingo, Tyler Bryan Wingo and Raven Faye Wingo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dario Castillo Sr. PLAINVIEW - Dario Castillo Sr., 50, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, in Lockney. Mr. Castillo was born Dec. 19, 1954, in Carrizo Springs to Aurielo Castillo and Elena Hernandez Castillo. He married Crestina Ramos on Nov. 22, 1980, in Plainview. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Maria Castillo of Plainview; three sons, Dario Castillo Jr., Andrew Castillo and Anthony Castillo, all of Plainview; five sisters, Maria Luna of Seminole, and Petra Gonzalez, Ilda Vasquez, Norma Hernandez and Alomar Ovalle, all of Floydada; three brothers, Aurielo Castillo Jr. of Floydada and Cruz Castillo and Pete Castillo, both of Plainview; his mother of Floydada, and three grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Verdalee Page Cooper PAMPA - Verdalee Page Cooper, 93, died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Canadian. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Wheeler Cemetery in Wheeler with the Rev. Dr. Earl Cooper and the Rev. Dr. Mert Cooper officiating. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church in Pampa. Arrangements are by Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian. Mrs. Cooper was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Wheeler County to the late Mr. James Amos and Mrs. Madge Page. She was a graduate of Wheeler High School and attended Baylor, McMurry and West Texas Normal. She taught school in Wheeler as an 18-year-old. She married Marvin Ellis Cooper on Christmas Day 1930. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1998. Much of their life was spent in Pampa, where Verdalee worked for 25 years at the Purviance Clinic as office manager. Verdalee was a voracious reader and daily crossword puzzler, but one of her proudest accomplishments besides educating three boys, was attaining the status of life master in duplicate bridge. She was a fierce competitor and mentor for many years. She was also a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Pampa, where she taught Sunday school for many years. In December 1997, Verdalee and Marvin moved to Amarillo to reside at Craig Retirement Center. Survivors include three sons, Lt. Col. David Cooper and wife, JoAnn, of Canyon, the Rev. Dr. Earl Cooper and wife, Penny, of Yuma, Ariz., and the Rev. The family suggests memorials be to the Wellington Cemetery Association. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jimmy Dale Shults CLARENDON - Jimmy Dale Shults, 55, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005. Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday in Robertson Funeral Directors Chapel of Memories with Tracy Wayne Richardson, a family member, officiating. Burial will be in Rowe Cemetery in Hedley. Mr. Shults was born Oct. 15, 1949, to J.D. and Margie Gregory Shults in Hall County. He attended schools in Memphis and Hedley. He served in the Army as a medic. He was an expert drilling and completion hand in the oil field and began his career, which spanned more than 30 years, with Ford Tool Co. in Perryton. He was production superintendent for McDay Energy Corp. at the time of his death. Mr. Shults always had a positive, can-do attitude with a happy demeanor that spilled over to all those around him. He could play almost any string instrument by ear and loved to entertain anyone who would listen. He was a cowboy at heart all of his life and had a deep love for horses, saddles, cattle, farming, a nice row of cotton and anything else associated with that lifestyle. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Cyndi Peril Shults of San Antonio; a daughter, Shana M. A lifetime resident of the Clayton area, Raymond graduated from Clayton High School in 1956. He married Catherine Bargas Fernandez on Jan. 6, 1962, in Dalhart, Texas. He worked for Southwest Metal Works in Clayton for almost 41 years and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bernie Fernandez on Dec. 1, 1991; and a granddaughter, Erica Danielle Barreras on April 25, 2003. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the family lounge of Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. Mr. Rowntree was born July 8, 1920, in Lockney to J.R. and Muriel Jarboe Rowntree. He passed away July 4 in Austin. He grew up in the Texas Panhandle and graduated from Amarillo High School. He attended West Texas State University, leaving his studies to serve the Navy during World War II as a Navy pilot and flight instructor in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning from the war, he resumed studies at WTSU, graduating with a degree in business administration. He married Audrey Estopinal in 1946 and went on to have a successful career in the wholesale hardware business in Amarillo and Dallas. At the time of his death, Bob was a resident of the Clairmont Retirement Community in Austin and was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church. Special thanks go to the caring staff of The Clairmont and the great friends he made there who greatly enriched his life since his move in March 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings; and his wife of 57 years, Audrey E. Rowntree. Survivors include a son, Dr. Robert J. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. On a stormy, autumnal equinox Sept. 23, 1910, in Commerce, Mary Rutillia "Marue" O'Neil was born at home and put into a wood-burning oven to make her entry into this world warmer and happier. She obtained her bachelor of arts and master of arts from East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M at Commerce. Along the way she traveled to 46 states, Canada and Mexico, summer schools at East Texas, Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin. During the depression she was hired for numerous teaching jobs, eventually ending up in Amarillo. There she met "The Man of Her Dreams," Herbert Lee Miller, whom she married. They lived in Amarillo for 40 years, and then they moved to Dallas in 1984 to be near their grandchildren. She received numerous teaching awards during her career and served as a docent at the Amarillo Museum of Art. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, P.E.O., as well as Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo, and Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. The family would like to thank her loving caregivers, Lucy, Anna, JoAnne and Maudrie, without whom we could not have honored her wishes to remain at home. Also, we would like to thank Ryanne and Jackie, her hospice caregivers. When asked about her life, Marue said she had no regrets: "Above and beyond the happiness I shared with my family, I had the satisfaction of awakening the joy of learning, and the teaching of reading to little children-all this and heaven too." She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Herb, and her cherished granddaughter, Maran Rauscher. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Nita and David Smith, and Malee and Monroe Helm; five grandchildren and their spouses, David and Heidi Smith, Tolly and Mark Salz, Patrick and Melissa Smith, Randal Rauscher and Howard Rauscher; three great-grandchildren, Michael Patterson, Marshall Salz, and Mary Carolyn Smith; a brother, Tom O'Neil and wife, Lucille; and numerous nieces and nephews.
