Ensign Virginia L. Ensign, 84, of Amarillo died Sunday, July 17, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Robison Chapel of the Plains at First Christian Church with Dr. John Bridwell, minister emeritus, and the Rev. Jerry Kirkpatrick, interim minister, officiating. Private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Ensign was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Clinton, Okla. She moved to Visalia, Calif., with her parents in 1936. She graduated from Visalia High School in 1938 and attended Fresno State College. While in high school, she met M. Howard Ensign who would later become her husband. Upon graduating in 1942, she taught school in Wasco, Calif., for a year. On Feb. 5, 1943, Virginia married Howard, who was stationed in Lincoln, Neb. She and her husband moved to Amarillo in June 1944 when Howard was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base. Virginia taught instrumental music in the Amarillo Public School System for 27 years, retiring in 1979. Virginia was an active member of First Christian Church and belonged to the Friendship Class. She was an active participant, playing her violin for the Amarillo Symphony from 1944 through 1975, was a member of Amarillo Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Top-O-Texas Airstream Club. Survivors include her husband; a son, Don L. Ensign of North Andover, Mass.; a daughter, Vicki L. Nierlich of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Trinity Baptist Church with Tracy Ward officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mrs. Luke passed away unexpectedly Sunday after suffering a brain aneurysm. She was born in Dimmitt and was a lifelong resident of Amarillo. She was in the first graduating class of Tascosa High School. She also attended West Texas State University. She has been in the insurance business for more than 20 years and has worked with A+ Insurance for the past 10 years. Mrs. Luke attended Trinity Baptist Church and volunteered with Make-A-Wish for many years. She was a member and past president of Billiards Congress of America. Survivors include two daughters, Kristy Lewis and husband, Craig, and Liz Walker, all of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Caroline Lewis of Amarillo; and two grandsons, Grant Lewis and Ryan Walker, both of Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Washington Avenue Christian Church with Jim Shelburne, senior pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St. Mrs. Purviance was born in Owensville, Mo., to Paul and Eva Drewel on April 19, 1932. She married Charles Purviance on April 21, 1951, in Belle, Mo. Wilma was always helping others before herself, she was always a caring and understanding wife and mother to her husband and five children. Throughout her life she was an Army wife, an Army mom of two and a Marine mother-in-law. She was always top-notch to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was very proud of her country and God. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church for many years and was a member of Priscilla Circle Women's Group. Wilma was also an elf with the Eveline Rivers Christmas Project for the last 15 years. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Lisa from Vista Care for the wonderful care she gave to their wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters. Mrs. Davenport was born in Hedrick, Okla., on Oct. 31, 1925. She graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University. She was a very devoted Christian wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by five brothers; her parents; and her husband, Robert I. Davenport. Survivors include two sons, Joel Thomas Davenport and wife, Cindy, of Kemp and James Mark Davenport and wife, Denise, of Amarillo; a sister-in-law, Wanda Thomas of Amarillo; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special family members, Gene and DeLois Young. She was a member of United Pentecostal Church Northside. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Davis; her parents; and her husband, Duwayne Leonard Davis. Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery. Mr. Hacker was born March 15, 1911, in Parrott and had lived in Amarillo since 1953. He worked and retired from Amarillo Hardware after 31 years as a purchasing agent. He then worked for McKechnie & Sons for 10 years. He married his wife, Clema, on Dec. 18, 1928, in Clovis, N.M. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Weldon Hacker of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Keri Hacker of Amarillo; a grandson, Kenneth Hacker of Amarillo; two great- grandsons, David Hacker and John Hacker, both of Amarillo; and a stepgranddaughter, Becky Bagwell and family of Amarillo. She graduated a year early from high school, receiving an Ace Scholarship from Amarillo. Mrs. Stanton had been a resident of the Pampa and Lefors communities. She married Clark Stanton on Feb. 10, 1950. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Stanton Graves of Muleshoe; a sister, Mildred Lewis of Pampa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Ave. J., Muleshoe, TX 79347; or a favorite charity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gene Ledbetter DUMAS - Gene Ledbetter, 73, died Saturday, July 16, 2005. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Benjamin D. Seller, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Ledbetter was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Silverton to Elden and Gladys Ledbetter. He had resided in Dumas since 1959. He was stationed in Tulle, Greenland, while serving in the Army from 1952 to 1954. He graduated from West Texas College with a bachelor of science degree in 1957 and a master of education degree in 1962. On Aug. 24, 1967, he married Carolyn Lee Monroe in Amarillo. He completed 43 years in education before retiring in 2000. He taught one year in Moran and one year in Friona. The next 41 years were spent with Dumas ISD. He taught English at Dumas High School and later served as assistant principal. He was principal at Morningside Elementary in Dumas for the last 23 years of his career. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Texas Elementary Principal and Supervisors Association, from which he received the Man of the Year Award in 1997. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Dumas. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sha Burdsal and husband, John, of Midland; a son, Clay Ledbetter and wife, Cathy, of Corvalis, Mont.; two sisters, Margaret Charter and husband, Jim, of Sanger and Jody Bebout and husband, Jack, of Dumas; five grandchildren, Hayden Burdsal, Camdon Burdsal, Cody Ledbetter, Garrett Ledbetter and Chloe Ledbetter; many nieces and nephews; and his wonderful caretakers at Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Garrison worked for Electrical Power Companies for 41 years, retiring from the Deaf Smith Electric Co-op in Hereford in 1999. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church with Bill Woodard, her nephew, and the Rev. Walter Reed, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mrs. Naugle was born Oct. 3, 1907, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Prior to moving to Sunray in 1985, she lived in Stratford all of her life. She married Willis Naugle on Aug. 17, 1929, in Guymon, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband; and two sons, Richard Naugle and Baby Naugle. Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Davis and Dean Carroll, LaNell Blades and husband, Alton, and Malynda Hurd and husband, Tom; a son, Glen Naugle and Carol Robbins; a sister-in-law, Ruth Naugle; a brother-in-law, Basil Naugle; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great- great-grandchildren. Services were at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment was in Sunset Mausoleum No. 2. Mr. Ward was born Sept. 6, 1913 in Erick, Okla. He was a public school teacher and superintendent of schools in Olustee, Okla. Survivors include three children, Eddie J. Ward, Thomas R. Ward and Sue Howell; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
