Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Stephen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jim Smith, senior pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Heflin was born May 29, 1922, in Danville, Ala. After graduating from high school in 1939, he attended Franklin College in Indiana. In 1942, he interrupted his college education to join the Army Air Corps. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Franklin College, receiving his baccalaureate degree in 1948. After working in Tennessee as an investigator for the Civil Service Commission, he attended Peabody College and Vanderbuilt University, where he received his master of arts degree in history. During these graduate studies he served in research and teaching fellowships, positions which continued as he completed the work for his doctoral degree at Vanderbuilt. In 1957, he accepted a teaching position in the department of history at West Texas A&M University, a position which spanned three decades and continued until his retirement. During his teaching career at WT, he earned the respect both of his colleagues and his students as evidenced by awards in teaching excellence, favorite professor and, upon retirement, professor emeritus of history. He contributed his talents in many ways to the quality of the wider university campus, but most especially by his leadership in organizing a chapter of Phi Delta Theta, a national social fraternity that he had joined as an undergraduate student at Franklin College. He served as faculty advisor to the WT campus chapter until his retirement. Mr. Heflin married Patsy Blair Morris in 1973. She shared his love of travel, especially in the British Isles. Both were active in church activities at St. Stephen United Methodist, serving in many leadership positions until her illness and death. In 2003, he moved to Craig Methodist Retirement Community, where he lived until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife; and a stepson, Kelly Blair Morris. Survivors include a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lockhart and husband, John, of Hartselle, Ala.; two nephews, Tim Lockhart and wife, Anne, of Norfolk, Va., and Drew Lockhart and wife, Leslie, of Huntsville, Ala.; a niece, Abigail Lockhart of Lilburn, Ga.; a stepson, John Miller Morris of Austin; and a stepgranddaughter, Erin Claire Morris of Austin. The family suggests memorials be to the Frank and Patsy Heflin Scholarship Fund at WTAMU in Canyon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yarisbeth Rodriguez Molina Yarisbeth Rodriguez Molina, 1, of Amarillo died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road. Mass will be at a later date in El Encina de la Paz, Durango, Mexico. Burial will be in El Encina de la Paz. Survivors include her parents, Alonzo and Sandy Rodriguez of Amarillo; her grandparents, Enriqueta Rodriguez and Lazaro Rodriguez, both of Cactus, and Hermelinda Molina and Juan Molina, both of El Encino de la Paz; and two aunts, Gloria Ruiz Molina and Lucy Molina, both of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen Phillips Stephen Phillips, 49, of Amarillo died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Jubilee Apostolic Church with Royce D. Elms, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery by N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Phillips was born in Bossier City, La. He moved to Amarillo in February 2005. He was employed as a painter with Mike Murphy Painting Contractors. He was a member of Jubilee Apostolic Church. Survivors include his mother, JoAnn Frost of Amarillo; his father, Robert Phillips of Arcadia, La.; a brother, Larry James Phillips of Arcadia; a sister, Kathy Littlejohn of Clovis, N.M.; his grandmother, Lila Phillips of Freeport; and an uncle, Grady Robbins of Amarillo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere Mildred Prince WHITNEY - Mildred Prince, 89, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial will be in Hillcrest Garden of Memory in Hillsboro. Mrs. Prince was born March 23, 1916, in Fredericktown, Mo., the daughter of Mark and Lenna Conley. She graduated from Texas Womans University with a bachelor of science degree. Her first teaching job was in El Paso, where she married the principal, Horace Prince, in 1939. She was also a home demonstration agent for Southwestern Public Service Co. in Amarillo. Mildred retired in 1985 and lived in Amarillo before coming to the Whitney area in 1996. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Survivors include her children, D'Anne Thompson and husband, Don, of White Bluff, John Prince and wife, Jonie, of Lodi, Calif., Nancy Prince of Laveta, Colo., and Sally Smith and husband, Robert, of Altus, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Canterbury Villa Nursing Home, secure unit landscaping, 1725 Old Brandon Road, Hillsboro, TX 76645. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Susie Lavada Rhoades SULPHUR SPRINGS - Susie Lavada Rhoades, 64, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Central Baptist Church. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park by Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mrs. Rhoades was born May 10, 1922, in Canadian. She married Cleo W. Rhoades on June 1, 1941, with $30 in their pocket and love in their hearts. Susie and Cleo had three children, Kenneth and twins, Linda and Wanda, who were born while Cleo was serving in the Navy. Susie had all the action she could stand at home with three small children. After World War II, they moved to Borger where they lived until 1989. Amarillo became home from 1989 to 2000 before they settled in Sulphur Springs. Many friends were made during this earthy pilgrimage. She now enjoys the opportunity to reunite with those friends that went before her. Susie was very proud of her children, her grandchildren and her great- grandchildren. She loved being a wife, a mother and a grandmother. She accepted Christ as her Savior in 1950, and being a Christian and a faithful member was an important part of her life. When her husband of 64 years became ill with Alzheimer's, her role as a loving wife changed from a supportive mate to one of a full-time caregiver. She was unable to attend church regularly, but on Aug. 13, she became a member of the heavenly choir. Her spirit is with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Josephine McCoy Strawbridge; two brothers; five sisters; and a great-grandchild, Gage Burleson. Survivors include a son, the Rev. Kenneth Rhoades and wife, Patsy, of Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Linda Sprowls and husband, Robert, of Amarillo and Wanda Hysmith and husband, Mel, of Fort Worth; her grandchildren, Stephen and Laurie Rhoades, Corey and Heather Hysmith, Kimberly and Tim Burleson, Cheryl and Paul Frye, Kari and Jason Kosanke and Amanda and Rod Robeson; her great- grandchildren, Brittney Rhoades, Colleen Rhoades, Jennifer Rhoades, Nicole Rhoades, Makayla Frye, Nathan Frye, Madelyn Frye, Colton Hysmith, Daisy Robeson, Keaton Burleson, Kaki Burleson, Karson Kosanke and Kyler Kosanke; and two sisters, Eunice Seay and Idamae Sincliar, both of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be to the building fund at Central Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Melvin Hansel Turner GIDDINGS - Melvin Hansel Turner, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Clayton officiating. Burial was in Giddings City Cemetery by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home. Mr. Turner was born Sept. 10, 1923, in Howe, Okla., the son of Aubry and Ina (Shearer) Turner. He married Emily Carter on Aug. 30, 1946, and was an engineer in the oil industry. He managed Turner Wireline Service Co. He was also an Air Force veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren, Tiffany Turner and Zachary Whitmire. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra Turner of Fredericksburg and Sterline Marcum and husband, Marlin, of Post; a son, Alan Turner and wife, Pam, of Giddings; five grandsons, Bill Whitmire and wife, Raychel, of Cameron, Matthew Whitmire and wife, Deanna, of Keller, Benjamin Marcum and wife, Katie, of Virginia Beach, Va., Stephen Marcum of Post and Nathan Turner and wife, Liz, of Brayn; two granddaughters, Erica Betts and husband, Jeff, of Oklahoma and Emily Marcum; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Roberson and husband, Joe, and Falba Evans and husband, Charles, of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Henry Earl Morris PAMPA - Henry Earl Morris, 67, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Hobart Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Powell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Morris married Deloris Minnick on April 29, 1963, in Pampa. He was a member of Hobart Baptist Church and was a volunteer for the Salvation Army. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Debra K. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Brown Funeral Directors Chapel of the Fountains with Scott Maze, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Nicholas was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Lamar County. She married L.C. Nicholas on Jan. 27, 1940, in Paris. Survivors include two daughters, Lynda Schroeder of Borger and Deloras Cooper of Deer Park; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rena E. Row MEMPHIS - Rena E. Row, 93, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Travis Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnnie Snider officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Hughs Funeral Home. Mrs. Row was born Dec. 29, 1911, in Pottsboro. She married J.C. Row on March 29, 1945, in Vernon. Survivors include two sons, Jackie Row of Memphis and Rex Row of Joshua; a daughter, Jerry Roye of Cleburne; a sister, Helen Blakley of Vernon; five grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren.
