Thurston Sandford J. Thurston, 81, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St., with the Rev. James Crawford of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Thurston was born July 10, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived in Amarillo for the past 50 years. He married Esther Gallardo in 1959 in Clovis, N.M. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army with the 82nd Airborne Paratroopers. He was very proud to have served his country and was a member of the DAV. He enjoyed fishing and loved his grandchildren and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Sandy Thurston and Sarah Munoz, both of Amarillo, Shari Aragon of Duncan, Okla., Sally Frohling of Atlanta and Susan Harwood of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Jay Thurston of Amarillo; two sisters, Leotta Pullman of Muscatine, Iowa, and Lois Marolf of Moscow, Iowa; a brother, Edgar Kublik of Wilton, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. Swafford, 85, of Amarillo died Friday, Oct. 21, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Jeff Bearden officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Swafford was born April 1, 1920, in Claude to Raymond T. and Eva Lou Swafford. He was a member of the local carpenter's union and First Baptist Church and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Goldie Weeden and Rosa Lee Simpson. Survivors include three daughters, Carol Davy and husband, Thomas, of Lake Mary, Fla., Terry Tyler and husband, Keith, of Amarillo and Kim Linehan and husband, Michael, of Fort Worth; a brother, Robert L. Swafford and wife, Vivian, of Okmulgee, Okla.; five sisters, Mary Lou Usrey and husband, Wilson, of Deer Park, Edith Blanton of Seminole, Marguerite Ballew of Lake Elsinore, Calif., Betty Milton of Midland and Julie Collins and husband, Patrick, of Kilgore; five grandchildren, Tracy Brandes and husband, Aaron, of Dallas, Leigha Houk and husband, Mickey, and Lindsey Tyler, all of Amarillo, and Ashley Linehan and Austin Linehan, both of Fort Worth; four great- grandchildren, Noah Houk, Gracelyn Rae Houk and Savannah Tyler, all of Amarillo, and Tyler Brandes of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope Ingold Eaton Hope Ingold Eaton, 77, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005. Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Children's Chapel with the Rev. Clifton Mann, rector, officiating. Mrs. Eaton died Saturday in Amarillo after a brief illness. Born Margaret Hope Ingold on Aug. 16, 1928, in Detroit, Hope married Paul Eaton, a World War II Navy veteran, in 1951. They honeymooned in New Orleans on their way to their new hometown of Roswell, N.M. Hope had never been west of Chicago and was not sure at first about living in the wide-open desert of southeastern New Mexico. She grew to love the Southwest and especially her new friends. She worked as a secretary supporting her husband while he established himself as a lawyer in Roswell. Hope was active in social and community affairs in Roswell and made many lifelong friends. She was a devoted, loving and full- time mother to her three children, who were born in 1952, 1954 and 1957. The Eatons moved to Amarillo in 1979, when Paul established a branch of the Hinkle, Cox, Eaton law firm here. Hope graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She remained a loyal Wolverines football fan, wearing her Michigan sweater and cheering her team on game days. She also treasured her membership and friends in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Prior to her illness, she had arranged a reunion in Michigan this month with friends she had known since kindergarten. Hope enjoyed reading, listening to music, playing bridge, doing word puzzles, traveling with her husband and spending time at her New Mexico mountain cabin. She also loved her dogs. She was preceded in death by her husband in February 2004 in Amarillo. Survivors include two sons, Scott Eaton and wife, Kathleen, and Bob Eaton and wife, Kathryn, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Elizabeth Eaton Doyle and husband, Tim, of Rice Lake, Wis.; a brother Dr. John Ingold and wife, Sally, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; and six grandchildren, Albert Eaton, a 2005 U.S. Naval Academy graduate now serving in the Marines, Park Eaton, a 2005 graduate of the University of Southern California, Christopher Eaton, Michael Eaton, William Eaton and Emma Eaton, all of Albuquerque. Tony McCollum, pastor at First United Methodist Church in Madisonville, and the Rev. Greg Oberg, associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Pearland, officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. McCollum was born Sept. 17, 1912, in Maxwell, Okla. She graduated from Apache High School in Apache, Okla., in 1930, and Cameron Junior College and Southwestern State at Weatherford, Okla., receiving degrees from both schools. Before her marriage in 1941, she taught school. She was a homemaker and a charter member of North Amarillo Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school. She volunteered at Meals On Wheels and BSA Hospice. Mrs. McCollum was a member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Artie McCollum in 1994. Survivors include a daughter, Nelda Bean and husband, James E., of Amarillo; a son James E. McCollum and wife, Kitty, of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Rilla Gonzales, Aaron Bean, Will McCollum, Tony McCollum, Browning McCollum and Georgia McCollum Oberg; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Bell was born Feb. 20, 1939, in Hereford to Aubrey and Ermel Bell. He married Pat Mason in 1982. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two sisters. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Tyler was born Feb. 19, 1937, in Branch, Ark., to Robert and Jewel Boydston. On April 21, 1952, she married her childhood sweetheart, Melvin Tyler in Carrizozo, N.M. Melvin and Wanda moved to Amarillo in 1955 and have resided in Randall County since that time. Wanda cherished her family and many friends. She attended Bethel Assembly Church. She was a devoted Christian and a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother known affectionately as "Nan." She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to thank BSA Hospice for all their help and support. Byars, 92, of Amarillo died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005. Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bandera Cemetery in Bandera with Martin Smith officiating. Arrangements were by Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera. Mr. Byars, formerly of Bandera, was born Jan. 24, 1913, in Greer County, Okla. He was a salesman for a fruit company and a house parent at the Medina Children's Home. He was a member of Bandera Church of Christ and later North Amarillo Church of Christ. He married Ila Mae Stark on June 7, 1933, in Clovis, N.M. She preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 1988. He was a loving, caring man. He loved his Christian families in Shamrock, Bandera and Amarillo. He loved to fish and taught his grandson. They had many happy hours on the fishing banks. He was also preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers; two sisters and two grandsons, Mark and Donald Eugene. Survivors include a daughter, Ila Jean Dodgen of Amarillo; and three grandchildren, Allen Coleman, Gloria Coleman and Stephanie Coleman.
