"Bill" Cox Dr. William R. "Bill" Cox, DVM, 59, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Kevin Oakley of Mescalero Baptist Church officiating. Dr. Cox was born Aug. 24, 1946, in Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1965. He went on to receive a bachelor's and master of science from West Texas State University. In 1973, he graduated from Texas A&M University with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. In 1973, Bill moved to Independence, Kan., to practice with Dr. Robert Hayes. In 1974, Bill returned to Amarillo to open his private practice on South Western Street. Cox Veterinary Services served Amarillo and the surrounding communities for more than 30 years. He was beloved by his family and will be sorely missed by his numerous friends. Bill was a horseman his entire life. In the early '70s, he was a member of the Randall County Sheriff's Posse. Over the years, he had been an active member of the American Quarter Horse Association, American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He was one of the founding members of the Texas Quarter Horse Association and served on the board of directors. Raising a good racehorse was one of the true joys of his life. Bill was also an avid runner and tennis player. He won or placed highly in countless charity footraces in the Amarillo area over the years and was a member of the 1999 "National Champion" Tascosa Country Club Tennis Team. He was preceded in death by his father, W. Ronald Cox; his mother, Mary Prien Cox; and a sister, Penny Cox. Survivors include a son, Ronald A. Cox and wife, Roper; two grandsons, Rhoan and Rowdy Cox; a sister, Becky Salazar; and his fiance, Debora Sietz. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ester Jonas Ester Jonas, 62, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005. The family held a private service. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Jonas was born Jan. 21, 1943, in Amarillo. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Richard Jonas of Denver; three daughters, Jena Binnet, Michel Cloar and Shanna Bellar, all of Peru, Ind.; two sisters, Jessie Velasquez of Amarillo and Sara Starr of Virginia; a brother, Felix Rodriquez; and seven grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- William Joe "W.J." Fellers William Joe "W.J." Fellers, 90, of Amarillo died Friday Oct. 28, 2005. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick, associate pastor, and Jim Fox, Vista Care Hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Fellers was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Vernon and graduated from Hereford High School. He married his wife Lucille on March 6, 1938, in Clovis, N.M. "W.J." enlisted in the Army, earning the rank of major, and served in the Northwest Territory during World War II. "W.J." was a founding partner of Leon C. Hoyt and Co., a CPA firm. He later formed his own company, working in the Coble Building. He earned an award from the state of Texas as being one of two of the oldest practicing CPAs. He also co-founded Texas Energies and participated in the oil and gas business for several years. He was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Fellers of Amarillo; a daughter, Nancy Brent of Amarillo; a brother, John D. Fellers of Auburn, Ala.; two grandchildren, Jay Brent and wife, Chonda, and Julie Brent, all of Amarillo; and a great-granddaughter, Jordan Brent. Box 447, Amarillo, TX 79178. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Faye Pickett Faye Pickett, 89, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with Bill Probasco officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Pickett was born Aug. 16, 1916, in West Plains, Mo., to Isaac and Georgia Turner. She married Dick Pickett on Jan. 28, 1934, in Amarillo. After her husband's stroke in 1969, she retired from Blackburn's and devoted her life to taking care of him and her family. They lived in Amarillo until the mid-1970s, when they moved to Mena, Ark. They enjoyed many happy days at their cabin in Red River, N.M., with their friends and family. She took history classes at Polk County Community College until 2002 and was a member of Grace Bible Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, and a daughter, Edith Ann Harrington in 2001. Survivors include a brother, Roy Turner and wife, Virginia, of Amarillo; three grandsons, Mike Harrington and wife, Brenda, and Matt Harrington and wife, Tammy, all of Amarillo, and Mark Harrington and wife, Mila, of Fort Smith, Ark.; and three great-grandchildren, Dustin, Amanda and Ashley. Shields GUYMON, OKLA. - Myrtle B. Shields, 93, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Straight First Christian Church with the Rev. Kenny McKinley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home. Mrs. Shields was born March 6, 1912, north of Guymon in the Eula community. She was a charter member of Straight First Christian Church. Survivors include a son, Gary Shields of rural Guymon; six grandchildren; a brother, Leo Hinds of Amarillo, Texas; and a sister, Bernice Whittington of La Mirada, Calif. Mr. Bryant was born July 4, 1937, to Roy Bryant and Alma Spencer Bryant in Albuquerque, N.M. He married Wanda Nell Newman on Aug. 7, 2000. Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Kandi Walker of Elk City; a stepgranddaughter; a brother, the Rev. Paul Bryant of Atlanta; and three sisters, Ima Jean Adkins, Francine Estes and Barbara Lowe, all of Elk City. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Robert Akin OLTON - Robert Akin, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, in Lubbock. Mr. Akin was born June 13, 1926, in Chickasha, Okla. He married Liz Dosher on Dec. 15, 1946, in Olton. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Laura Huckabee of Austin; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Colwell was born June 22, 1928, in Quail to Iry Colwell and Etta Feemster Colwell. He married Ruby Cochran on March 24, 1952, in Mangum, Okla. Survivors include two sons, Gary Colwell and Larry Colwell, both of Wellington; three brothers, Luke Colwell of Little Rock, Ark., Earl Colwell of Tulsa, Okla., and A.D. Colwell of Fort Worth; a sister, JoAnn Smith of Fort Worth; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Merle Hendrix Neusch PANHANDLE - Merle Hendrix Neusch, 92, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in Lubbock. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Panhandle with the Rev. Bill Fuller, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Monahans City Cemetery in Monahans with the Rev. Craig Rhoton officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mrs. Neusch married James Hendrix on June 26, 1934, in Pecos, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1972. She married Francis Neusch on July 19, 1983, in Panhandle. Survivors include her husband; a son, James M. Hendrix of Grand Prairie; two daughters, Joy Turner of Lubbock and Dixie Pace of Lancaster; three stepsons, Edwin Neusch and Leonard Neusch, both of Amarillo, and Vernon Neusch of Panhandle; five stepdaughters, Amelia Bellar, Noreen Edwards and Diane Whitaker, all of Amarillo, and Mildred Roberson and Barbara Hammer, both of Panhandle; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great- grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis with the Rev. Johnny Snider, pastor of Travis Baptist Church in Memphis, officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mrs. Hightower was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Lakeview, Hall County, and had been a resident of Hall County most of her life. She married J.H. Murdock Jr. in 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1961. She then married Delbert High- tower in 1965, and he preceded her in death in 2001. She had worked at various places throughout her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Travis Baptist Church in Memphis. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; a brother; a sister; and a son. Survivors include a daughter and special son-in-law, Patsy and Charles Black of Dumas; a son, John "Skipper" Murdock of Dumas; a sister, Dorothy Anthony of Lubbock; two brothers, Bo Moreland of Bryan-College Station and J.T. Moreland of Lowell, Ark.; a special person in her life, Connie Murdock of Memphis; five grandchildren, Tracie and Steve Shillings of Amarillo, Stacie Murdock of Granbury, Corey Murdock of Memphis and Hunter Murdock of El Reno, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney and Justin Shillings and Aaliyah Chavera, all of Amarillo, and Riley Murdock of Memphis.
