Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cox Funeral Home Benton Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Sherman Eastland, chaplain of Northwest Texas Healthcare Systems, officiating. Mr. Kemp was born and raised in Hereford and was a graduate of Hereford High School. He was a veteran of the Army. He married Robbie Edwards in 1967 in Plainview. He lived in Amarillo for more than 20 years. Mr. Kemp was a dedicated husband, dad, grandfather, son and brother who worked hard to provide for his family. He enjoyed reading, movies, traveling and playing the harmonica. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his father, Clois A. Kemp in 1994. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jason Kemp and wife, Faith, of Austin; a daughter, Elisa Mott and husband, Robert, of Amarillo; his mother, Margie M. Ray of Amarillo; his grandmother, Helen Watts of Hereford; and a brother, Michael C. Kemp and wife, Kathy, of Amarillo. He is also survived by a brother, J.D. Ray of Amarillo, and two sisters, Teresa Compton and Sam Tignor, both of Bushland. He is "Grandpa" to and survived by three grandchildren, Robert Mott Jr. and Andrew Mott, both of Amarillo, and Nicholas Kemp of Austin. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mary E. Pestor Mary E. Pestor, 86, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Pestor enjoyed oil painting, golfing and listening to hymns. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and her parents, Silas and Lena Land. Survivors include a son, Herbert C. Pestor III of Amarillo; a daughter, Rebecca S. Johnson of Richardson; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the American Heart Association. Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bobby Dean Sterling Bobby Dean Sterling, 76, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery in Muleshoe with the Rev. Bob Burris officiating. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home of Muleshoe. Mr. Sterling was born June 18, 1929, in Bailey County. He worked in the construction trade during his life and was a loving brother and friend. Survivors include four sisters, Odie Sitzes of Tyler, Hazel Ball of Muleshoe, Margie Kemp of Lubbock and Betty Casteel of Dallas, and a brother, E.J. Sterling of Littlefield. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Irene K. Sparks CANADIAN - Irene K. Sparks, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Monte Kreis officiating. Her granddaughter, Sheila Childers, will provide the music. Burial will be in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery by Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian. Mrs. Sparks was born Oct. 9, 1916, in Boone, Neb., to the late Mr. Fred Becklam and Mrs. Mabel Kennedy Becklam. She married Elmer E. Sparks on Jan. 24, 1935, in Columbus, Neb. The two farmed for a few years during the brutal drought of the 1930s. By 1944, they were both working for Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. Mrs. Sparks did clerical work. In 1946, they moved to the Home Ranch near Glazier. Mrs. Sparks participated fully in its operation. She helped plant an oasis of trees to create the paradise she and her husband envisioned and found the time to enjoy a bit of oil painting. In 1966, the family moved to Canadian. Mrs. Sparks served for several years as a bookkeeper for George's Texaco. She also worked tirelessly to support her husband's efforts on behalf of the Hemphill County Historical Survey Committee, editing and sometimes illustrating his work. After her husband's death on Aug. 26, 1985, she traveled often with tour groups. She continued to pursue several artistic interests, including china painting. She was a past member of the Arts and Crafts Club. Mrs. Sparks was revered by her family for her enduring moral support and for her sincere and informed interest in the lives of all of her descendants. In May 1997, the following comments about her were written by Chelsea Hand at the age of 15 and chosen for publication in the Amarillo Globe-News, "I would clone my great-grandmother... she never puts anyone down. She is a wonderful, cheery, optimistic, uplifting person. The world needs more like her." She was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Fred Sparks, and three sisters, Mabel Becklam, Iona Ogden and Freda Ogden. Survivors include three daughters, Claudette Hand of Canadian, Milly Lippke and husband, Hagen, of Uvalde and Carolyn Welch and husband, Jim, of San Antonio; seven grandchildren, Scott Hand and wife, Teresa, of Dalhart, Wayne Hand and wife, Beverly, of Seguin, David Lippke and wife, Tina, of Bluemont, Va., Sheila Childers and husband, Leonard, of Kingwood, Carl Lippke and wife, Shannon, of Conroe, Matt Welch and wife, Brynn, of Austin and Robert Welch of New Boston; and 17 great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Mr. Hunt was a native of Vernon. He retired as a mechanic for Phillips Petroleum after 21 years and served in the National Guard for eight years. Survivors include his wife, Jane; a daughter, Stacey Nivens of Borger; and two grandsons. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- A.J. Womble Jr. DALHART - A.J. Womble Jr., 78, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church with Leon Laney, pastor of Spiritual Life Center, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home. Mr. Womble was born Aug. 31, 1927, to Arthur J. and Ella Clowers Womble in Morse. He was raised in Morse. He moved to Dalhart in 1946, and on March 7, 1949, he married Jean Williams in Clayton, N.M. Mr. Womble farmed in the Dalhart area for years and was an accomplished pilot and mechanic. His favorite pastime was fishing. He will be remembered by his family as a great husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Allen Joe Womble, Gary Lee Womble and Rick Womble, all of Dalhart; two daughters, Jan Prater of Dalhart and Sherry Truelock of Logan, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Hahn of Pampa and Marceil Barber of Oklahoma City; and very special friends, Dorothy and Dwight Dowell. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Silverton Cemetery. Arrangements are by Myers-Chancellor Funeral Home. Mrs. Sweatt passed from this life Oct. 28, at her home in Silverton. Melva Jean was born in Loyal Valley on April 11, 1927, to Robert and Lena Rhea. She was one of 10 children. Throughout her life, she loved and was very close to her six sisters and three brothers. She was of a generation that is tough, not afraid of work or the challenges life gives us. She always had a smile, a giving spirit and time to visit. Melva Jean was married to E.H. Sweatt for 39 years until his death in 1990. They had resided in Eldorado and Pitchfork Ranch in Guthrie and retired to Silverton in 1987. Survivors include a daughter, Carla Sweatt of Silverton; a son, Tirk Sweatt and wife, Cindy, of Shamrock; three grandchildren, Trae, Sarah and Luke Sweatt; a brother, Donald Rhea of Seattle; and four sisters, Opal Woods of Cleveland, Ga., Daphene Lytle of Stigler, Okla., Wanda Morris of Barksdale and Shirlene Vines of Canadian. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church with the Rev. James McGowan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mrs. Ortiz was born March 17, 1913, in Barney to Jose Jaramillo and Maria Virginia Lovato Martinez. A lifelong resident of Union County, she was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton. Survivors include four daughters, Bertha Ojeda, Viola Gonzales and Ruby Kocer, all of Albuquerque, and Frances Naranjo of Clayton; six sons, Gilbert Ortiz of Albuquerque, Alfred DeHerrera of Santa Fe and Louis DeHerrera, Joe DeHerrera, George DeHerrera and Michael DeHerrera, all of Clayton; a brother, Candido Martinez of Loveland, Colo.; 40 grandchildren; and a number of great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home. Mrs. Barbieri was born May 5, 1909, to Aurelio and Adel Monti Clerici in Como, Italy. She married Guido Barbieri on Oct. 31, 1930, in Union City, N.J. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Winslow of Clovis; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charlene Graef Phillips CLOVIS, N.M. - Charlene Graef Phillips, 69, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in Amarillo, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today in The Chapel with Bruce Darrington officiating. Burial was in Mission Garden of Memories by Muffley Funeral Home. Mrs. Phillips was born Sept. 1, 1936, to Clayton C. and Edith Williams Graef in Olton, Texas. She married Gene Phillips on March 17, 1955, in Olton. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sandy Davis of Clovis; five sons, Jerry Dwayne Phillips of Plainview, Texas, Bobby Glen Phillips and Charles Ray Phillips, both of Amarillo, and Steven Eugene Phillips and Johnathan Derek Phillips, both of Clovis; her mother of Clovis; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Grady High School Gym with Otho Rogers officiating. Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home. Dayna was born June 20, 1988, to Johnny and Fern Jenkins Tredway in Clovis. She was a student at Grady High School and of the Christian faith. Survivors include her parents of Clovis; two sisters, Audra Tredway and Jonie Neumeister, both of Clovis; a brother, Josh Tredway of Clovis; and her grandmothers, Juanita Tredway of Clovis and Mildred Sain of Melrose.
