Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News Obituaries Friday, November 11, 2005 Amarillo Rachel S. Aikman Rachel S. Aikman, 74, of Amarillo died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Clifton Mann, rector, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Born in Tulsa, Okla., to Bess and Cal Stockton on March 6, 1931, she graduated from Will Rogers High School and attended the University of Oklahoma. While at the university, Rachel began a long and enjoyable association with Chi Omega. Swept off her feet by Robert E. Aikman, her "mejor amigo," they married May 19, 1950. They lived in Bartlesville, Okla., and Jackson, Miss., before moving to Amarillo in 1956, where she resided until her death. Mrs. Aikman was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, enthusiastically sharing in the work of the Altar Guild and Daughters of the King. She frequently employed her gift of Christian kindliness to welcome newcomers and comfort the sick and grieving. A woman of boundless energy, Rachel found time to dedicate her considerable talents to the Amarillo Junior League, the Garden Club, and Amarillo Art Alliance, as well as the Symphony Guild, P.E.O. Chapter CV, Bible study, and the Speech and Hearing Center. In 1981, Mrs. Aikman founded Caledonian Market Inc., an interior design firm, and her impeccable taste reflected cultured grace and a deep appreciation for all that is elegant and beautiful. Her designs were influenced by her vibrancy, warmth, and charm, and provided a backdrop for the refined hospitality for which she was well known. Rachel took great pleasure in the arts, and particularly enjoyed music and dancing (especially at weddings). Often the last to leave the dance floor, she will always be remembered for her portrayal of a cheerleader in "Fascinatin' Rhythm," the 1962 Junior League production of FabuLas Vegas. An avid bridge player, Rachel was tenacious and resolute, playing with disarming reserve. A global traveler, Mrs. Aikman left a legacy of Christian love in her footsteps. Her gentle spirit touched the hearts of all whom she met, and she never learned the meaning of the word "stranger." Rachel believed in the inclusiveness of the extended family, and her welcome knew no bounds. She found greatest fulfillment, however, in her four children, and her firm, quiet courage shone like a beacon to them. Survivors include a son, Jim Aikman and wife, Carrol, of Oklahoma City; three daughters, and their husbands, Melanie and Lea Crump and Lucia and Mike Gray, all of Midland, and Amy and Larry Roberts of Canyon; a daughter-in-law, Tina Aikman of Dallas; grandsons and their wives, Matt and Leah Gray of Houston, Rob and Victoria Aikman and Will and Sarah Crump of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Bill and Edee Aikman of Canyon; granddaughters and their husbands, Kate and Luke Olson of San Antonio, Lucia Lea and Sam Kim of Bellevue, Wash., Lainie and David Reuter of Reno, Nev., and Rachel and Andy Chandler of Lubbock; grandsons Michael Gray of Houston, Andrew Roberts of Canyon, Andrew Crump of Midland, and Jack Aikman of Oklahoma City; granddaughters, Meredith Aikman, Kathryn Aikman, and Jennifer Roberts, all of Dallas, and Katy Minten of San Antonio; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Gray, Nolan Reuter, and Gideon Kim, who were a source of great gratification and delight. Mr. Aikman was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Oklahoma City to Claud "Pappy" and Gladys "GiGi" Aikman. He attended Menlo School and graduated from San Angelo High School and the University of Oklahoma, where he pledged Phi Gamma Delta. He married his best friend, Rachel Stockton on May 19, 1950. A leader in the oil and gas industry for more than 50 years, Mr. Aikman began his career in 1952 as a petroleum landman for Cities Service Oil Company. The youngest District Land Manager in the history of the company, he moved to Amarillo in 1956. In 1960, Mr. Aikman and other family members formed Aikman Brothers Corporation. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Aikman actively participated in the management of the following companies: PanCanadian Petroleum (formerly Mana Resources Inc.), Dorchester Gas Corporation, Dorchester Exploration Inc., Energy Resources Corp., OGP Energy Companies Inc., Provident Trade Co., Lazy G Ranch Inc., and WhamTech Inc. From 1990 until his death, he served as a director of Range Resources Corporation. His enthusiasm for, and dedication to, the oil and gas industry are reflected in the variety of his memberships, including the Panhandle Producers and Royalty Owners Association, Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association, Panhandle Petroleum Landman's Association, and American Association of Petroleum Landmen (of which he was a founding member). Though later involved primarily in management, he never lost his love for the "nitty- gritty" of the business, maintaining his status as a Certified Petroleum Landman (CPL) until his death. Mr. Aikman cherished his personal relationships, and found great delight in meeting "oil cronies" and other friends, at the Dallas Petroleum Club, the Dallas Country Club, and the Amarillo Country Club. Mr. Aikman was long a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and his deep bass voice resonated lustily throughout the church when he sang with the choir in praise to God. His kindness, beneficence and moral strength were firmly rooted in his relationship with Christ. He loved God completely and people sacrificially. Social by nature and habit, Mr. Aikman exuded conviviality and affability, motivated always by a desire to model Christ. Liberal in forgiveness, he sought strength through humility. He found greatest pride, however, in his four children. Survivors include a son, Jim Aikman and wife, Carrol, of Oklahoma City; three daughters, and their husbands, Melanie and Lea Crump and Lucia and Mike Gray, all of Midland, and Amy and Larry Roberts of Canyon; a daughter-in-law, Tina Aikman of Dallas; grandsons and their wives, Matt and Leah Gray of Houston, Rob and Victoria Aikman and Will and Sarah Crump of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Bill and Edee Aikman of Canyon; granddaughters and their husbands, Kate and Luke Olson of San Antonio, Lucia Lea and Sam Kim of Bellevue, Wash., Lainie and David Reuter of Reno, Nev., and Rachel and Andy Chandler of Lubbock; grandsons Michael Gray of Houston, Andrew Roberts of Canyon, Andrew Crump of Midland, and Jack Aikman of Oklahoma City; granddaughters, Meredith Aikman, Kathryn Aikman, and Jennifer Roberts, all of Dallas, and Katy Minten of San Antonio; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Gray, Nolan Reuter, and Gideon Kim, who brought him endless entertainment and great joy.
