Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Ken Ball, pastor of Perryton Community Church and the Rev. Graham Harvey, pastor of Primera Iglesia Bautista, officiating. Military rites will be by D.A.V. Chapter No. 26. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Archie was born July 24, 1932, in Wellington. He served in the U.S. Army in the Rainbow Division and fought in World War II. He worked for Pantex for 34 years. He was a fixture at the Tri-State Fair where he had a food booth selling nut bars and deep-fried ice cream for 47 years. He helped make many children smile while he owned and operated Archie's Sno Ball Stand for many years. He married Lillian Hawkins on July 6, 1941. He was known by his loving family as "Pawpaw." He was deeply devoted to spending time with his family, especially his wife. He loved to collect hats and walking canes, but nothing compares to his love of traveling. He and his wife traveled extensively. They enjoyed spending their winters in the valley and their springs in Canada and Alaska. And the trips with their grandkids were even more special to them. He was preceded in death by a brother, Pressley Ashton. Helen Betty Barefield was born Dec. 6, 1940, in Port Lavaca. She was the fourth child born to Daniel and Minnie Stafford Brown. She attended public school in Port Lavaca. She married Erris D. Barefield on Sept. 19, 1961, in Port Lavaca. They moved to Amarillo in March 1963. Helen was a longtime employee of the Pantex Plant. Survivors include her husband, Erris D. Barefield; a daughter, Mysia F. Barefield of Houston; a son, Carlos D. Barefield of Little Elm; a stepson, Trent Baxter of Jackson, Miss.; and four grandchildren, Hailey D., Cassandra Harrison, Keiarra Barnes and Trevalla Eggleston. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Tim Triplett, pastor of Rock Chapel, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Brown was born March 21, 1921, in Newport and moved to Amarillo in 1937. He joined the U.S. Army on March 25, 1943, and was discharged on Feb. 22, 1946. He worked for Pantex for 26 years. At the time of his retirement in 1982 he was an assembly supervisor. He was loved by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Brown, in 1975; four brothers, Ernest Brown, Olin Brown, Hollis Brown and Dewell Brown; and two sisters, Alma Mitchell and Elva Buchanan. Grier in 1942 in Amarillo. She worked as a receptionist in several medical offices in Amarillo. She was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church and active member of Phi Beta Sigma Sorority. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Chris Coberley was born Dec. 21, 1968, in Pampa to Chancie and Nancy Margret Coberley. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1987, where he was active in the debate club and baseball team. Chris joined the Army in January 1988 and was trained as a Military Police Officer. He was stationed in Germany where he met his wife, Vera Hohmann, and they were married in 1991. After Chris's four-year tour of duty, they moved to Amarillo. Chris attended the 62nd Panhandle Regional Police Academy in 1992. He then went to work for the Randall CountySheriff's Office where he was a deputy for nine years. In 2001, Chris was employed by McCoy Meyers as a computer programer. He graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Samuel Young Stennis was born March 4, 1917, in Carlsbad, N.M., to Sam and Jeannie Stennis. The family moved to Dallas when he was 6 and later moved to Pampa, where he graduated from Pampa High School. He received a degree in metallurgy from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. He joined ASARCO zinc smelter in 1939 as a chemist and later held the position of plant manager beginning in 1968 until it closed in 1975. He then became an assistant to the ASARCO copper refinery manager until he retired in 1982. He was active in a variety of organizations, including the Amarillo Board of City Development, which he chaired in 1978, and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, where he served as a director and member of the industrial committee. He is a past president of the Amarillo Rotary Club and Amarillo Growth Association. He was active in Kids Inc., Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, West Texas Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Texas Association of Business and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. As a leader of the Amarillo job matching fair for six years, he helped match more than 1,500 unemployed or underemployed workers with positions in area business. As Chairman of the Mid-Continent Foundation Board of Texas State Technical Institute, he helped raise more than $35,000 and about $20,000 in equipment to develop a machinist training program at the school. In 1981, Stennis was named the "Texas Volunteer Industrial Developer of the Year." Burial will be in Castro Memorial Gardens in Dimmitt by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home. Mrs. Bowden was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Gunsight. She married L.B. Bowden on June 13, 1942, in Clovis, N.M. She was very active in First Baptist Church of Sunnyside since 1947, serving as a Sunday school teacher, WMW Director, Church Clerk, Librarian and Historian. Teeny was the Sunnyside News Correspondent for many years. She was a charter member of the Plains Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a charter member of Texas Baptist Committed and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. She was very active in Castro County Historical Commission, being a member and chairman since 1979. She was also a member of the Castro County Genealogical Society. Teeny helped with restoring the Castro County POW Chapel, and gathering information and establishing the historical markers in Castro County. She was awarded the "Citizen Through the Years" plaque by the Dimmitt Chamber of Commerce in 1983. She published two books, "This Land We Hold" in the mid-'50s and "Loudder and Loudder" in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.B. Bowden, on April 29, 1988; her parents, William Ernest and Nora Lee Loudder; and a brother, Leslie Loudder. Survivors include a brother, Alton Loudder of Littlefield; a sister, Verba Sadler of Sunnyside; and a very special friend, Clara Vick of Dimmitt. Mr. Kennon was born Jan. 19, 1954, in Memphis to Lawrence Kennon Sr. and Abbie Gober Kennon. He married Ann Symons on July 11, 1994, in Clovis, N.M., and was a master carpenter. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 9, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Travis Fedric Spurlock STRATFORD - Travis Fedric Spurlock, 89, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Stratford with the Rev. Mark Metzger, pastor of Sweetwater United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Gene Weinette, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Stratford officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery in Stratford by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Spurlock was born Dec. 28, 1915, in the Ellison home in Sherman County to Annie Clay and William Alexander Spurlock. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Harvey, Maymie, Clay, Alvin and Elsie Pearle, with Travis being born fourth. He was raised in the Spurlock Community in Sherman County. His father was a farmer and rancher and his mother a homemaker. He attended Spurlock School, held in the Spurlock Chapel, through high school. He married Lorene Folsom on Jan. 3, 1937, and they settled into farming and ranching on their own. In 1947 they built their own house, a half mile from the four-room home where their three children were born. They were overjoyed with electricity, a bathroom and running water. The majority of his time was spent on a tractor plowing, on a combine harvesting and in the workshop repairing and building machinery. His hobbies were planting and growing trees, soil conservation and dirt work (diversion terraces, ponds, tail-water pits, etc.) In his later years, he enjoyed woodworking - building bird feeders, birdhouses, highly finished wood boxes and welding ornamental pieces. He enjoyed collecting pocket knives and polishing rocks. He served on the Sherman County Farm Bureau Board. He also served on the Sherman County School Board for more than 20 years. He received the Farm Bureau Soil Conservation Award. He was the last living charter member of the Sunray Co-op. He attended the Methodist Spurlock Chapel. When the Chapel closed, he transferred his membership to First United Methodist Church of Stratford. She was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Memphis to John K. and Bessie Lee Harper Milam, and moved with her parents to a Bailey County stock farm 10 miles west of Sudan in February 1923. She graduated from Sudan High School in 1938, The late Dr. Milam had a B.A. degree from WTA&M University, an M.A. degree from Texas Tech and a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming. Her professional experience included teaching and counseling in Texas public schools including Pampa in the Panhandle of Texas, traveling as Director of Admissions for Austin College, visiting professor of colleges in New York, Illinois and Texas, and president of Cottey College, Nevada, Mo. Dr. Milam's honors include Who's Who in America; Who's Who in American Women; World Who's Who; Outstanding Educators of America; Distinguished Alumnus Award, WTA&M University; Distinguished Alumnus Award, Counselor-Education, University of Wyoming; Education Pacesetter Award, Nevada-Vernon County Chamber of Commerce; Friend of the College, Cottey College Alumnae Association; and M. Margaret Stroh International Scholarship awarded by the International Society of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi, published about 40 articles and spoke at many state, national and international conventions and commencements. After retiring she returned to Sudan and enjoyed traveling and reading. Survivors include a brother, J.K. Milam Jr. and wife, Mary Foster Milam of Tulia; two nephews, J.K.
