Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 8310 S. Coulter St. Mrs. Fowler loved her grandchildren, watching Billy Graham, the 700 Club and NASCAR. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Halie Diggs; a sister, Bonnie Fisher; and a brother, Bob Blackwell. Survivors include three daughters, Connie Slagle and Janelle Vanderford, both of Amarillo, and Monte Diggs of Round Rock; and a son, Bruce Fowler of Azle; and 22 grandchildren. Graveside services were held in Fort Sumner, N.M. Arrangements were by French Mortuary of Albuquerque, N.M. Mrs. Harris was born April 19, 1918, in Ranger Lake. She was a longtime resident of Amarillo. She worked at High Plains Baptist Hospital. Lou attended West Amarillo Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Harris; her parents, Edward and Mary Chick; and a sister, Mary Robinson. Survivors include a son, Bill Harris and wife, Robin, of St. Louis; a daughter, Nancy Sloan and husband, Bobby, of Edgewood, N.M.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorna Lund and husband, Ralph, of Fort Sumner. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wilma F. Hastie Johnson Wilma F. Hastie Johnson, 75, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with the Rev. Mike Nuthman officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Johnson entered the gates of heaven after injuries sustained in a car accident. Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Enid, Okla., to Frank W. and Edith Hastie. She attended Amarillo High School and married K.J. Johnson Jr. in Amarillo on Aug. 22, 1949. Mrs. Johnson worked at Kmart for 28 years, retiring in 1990 as the personnel manager. Mrs. Johnson was an avid bowler, traveling to and participating in many tournaments. She was an active member in the AWBA and served as a board member, even after her health prevented her from bowling she continued to join the "girls" at the bowling alley for fun and fellowship. In addition to bowling she also enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling with her sisters. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank W. Hastie Jr. and Earl W. Hastie. Survivors include her husband, K.J. Johnson Jr.; two daughters, Trisha Johnson and Edie Martin and husband Ed, all of Amarillo; three sisters, Naomi Sherlock, Evelyn McMahan and Bernice Webb and husband, Dewey Jr., all of Amarillo; two grandchildren, DeAngella Davidson and David Murphy; five great- grandchildren, Jessica, Aaron, Ashley, Wade and Matthew; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Georgia St. Dr. Petr was born Oct. 18, 1923, in Big Sandy, Mont. He served 2 1/2 years in the Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Normandy Campaign Star. He received a Bachelor of Science in agronomy in 1949 and a Master of Science in agronomy in 1952 from Montana State University, where he graduated with honors. He received a Ph.D. in crop breeding in 1959 from Iowa State University. He married Mary Rose Brady on June 6, 1959. Dr. Petr was a research agronomist for the USDA in Aberdeen, Idaho, from 1953 to 1967. He and his family moved to Amarillo in 1967. He was employed by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, where he became the area agronomist for the Texas Panhandle. His area of specialization was providing crop production and soil management education. He retired from the Extension Service as agronomist emeritus in 1985. Dr. Petr was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed traveling during his retirement. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Rose; a daughter, Laura Macha and husband, Mark, of Lubbock; two sons, Charles Petr and wife, Alison, of San Antonio and Mark Petr of San Francisco; seven sisters, Helen Moes, Lillian Blazek, Mary Nance, Ann Jones, Elizabeth Timmerman, Francis Keller and Evelyn Bitz; and six grandchildren. Mr. Detten was born and raised in Amarillo. He graduated from Price College in Amarillo and West Texas State University. Mr. Detten served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Margaret Abney in Amarillo on Jan. 23, 1960. He worked as an art teacher for the Amarillo Independent School District, retiring in 1993 after 32 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He married Barbara Lybrand in 1979 in Amarillo. He loved working with people and helping them. He will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Sharp was a neon glass bender and worked for Renco Sign Co. from 1948 until his retirement. He served with the Army and later served with the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and Palo Duro Masonic Lodge No. 1239. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Rita Sharp in 1996; his parents; four brothers; and two sisters. Hughes St. Mrs. Nevels was born May 5, 1913, in Cameron to Baxter and Emma Black Bradley. She was reared in Cameron and graduated from Cameron High School. She moved to Amarillo in 1938 and married Bennie Nevels on Aug. 28, 1942, in Canyon. They were the parents of two children. For many years, she was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and later became a member of St. John Baptist Church. She was a member of Wonderful View Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Tim Nevels and wife, Yvette, of Randallstown, Md., a daughter, Phyllis Nevels of Amarillo; two brothers, Bobbie Bradley of Amarillo and Al Bradley of Norwalk, Conn.; and six grandchildren, LaShanda Nevels, Joshua Pearson, Jacob Pearson, Caleb Pearson, Nicholas Nevels, and Christopher Nevels. When he was at Tulia Junior High, he was a member of the student council and played athletics. He was a senior at Tulia High School. He had won numerous awards for his welding work in the Tulia High School VICA program. He was an outstanding welder. He was an active member of the Swisher County FFA and the Swisher County 4-H club, where he won numerous awards including the 4-H Gold Star Award. He was active in the Swisher County Stock Shows. He had many friends in Kress and Tulia. She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. Moffitt LUBBOCK - A.J. Moffitt, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in Forrest Heights United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Rix Funeral Directors. Mr. Moffitt was called to his final home with our Lord and Savior on Dec. 29, following a lengthy illness. A.J. was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Wilson to Acel and Cleo Moffitt, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1955. In 1978, he married his loving and devoted wife, Dot. They joined their union with their respective children, Lee, Barry, Bryan, Rhonda and Mark. A.J. was self-employed for more than 40 years and was a well-known designer and builder of swimming pools throughout West Texas and New Mexico. He was a general contractor when he retired, due to health, in 2003 in Amarillo. Known as an entrepreneur, he trained horses and developed an innovative line of fishing lures. He was in the hairdressing business as a young man and in the hearing aid business for a time before starting in construction. Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Cindy, Danna and Angela; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Medellin and husband, Gabe; a daughter-in-law, Kay Alexander; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley Moffitt and Johnny Moffitt; and two sisters, Frankie Mayfield and Shelba Nelson. Moffitt Memorial Fund, City Bank, Lubbock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfonso "Poncho" Sanchez DEL RIO - Alfonso "Poncho" Sanchez, 66, Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, in Amarillo. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday in G. W. Cox Memorial Funeral Home with John Graff, deacon, officiating. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Fischler, CICM, officiating. Burial will be in San Felipe Cemetery with military honors by the Marine Corps and Jesus Lamas, American Legion Post 59500. Mr. Sanchez passed away Friday, Jan. 13, in Amarillo after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 17, 1939, in Del Rio. His wife, son and daughter-in-law were by his side at time of death. Alfonso was born and raised in Del Rio. He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Parochial School and graduated from San Felipe High School in 1957. Immediately after commencement, Alfonso and seven other graduates, a third of the graduates, enlisted in the Marine Corps. Classmates included Joe Linan, Lupe Felan, Teno Flores, Richard Perez, Eliodoro Martinez, Ruben Flores and Joe Gonzalez. During Al's 20-year career in the Marine Corps, he was stationed in San Francisco, where he met his wife Cecelia "Ceda" of 45 years. Their son, Adam was born in 1963 at Presidio of San Francisco. Alfonso was then sent to Atzugi, Japan, in 1964 and immediately transferred to the 1st Marine Air Wing in Da Nang, Vietnam. Upon his return to the States, the family was transferred to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif., where their oldest daughter, Julie Anne was born in 1966. In February 1967, Alfonso and his family were honored with a transfer to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Marine Corps rarely has duty stations where the family can accompany the sponsor. In 1971, Alfonso was again deployed to the 1st Marine Air Wing in Da Nang. During this tour, he was a machine gunner with medi-vac unit. His last assignment was in Arlington, Va., at HDQT's Marine Corp where he retired in 1977. Their third child, daughter Lori Anne was born in Virginia in 1974. He returned to his hometown of Del Rio, where his mother, Lupita had owned and operated a small store located on Broadbent Avenue for 40 years. The store is across from Sam Houston Elementary School known as La Escuela de Calaveras. In 1978, Al and his family built a larger convenience store at the same location known as Poncho's Stop N Shop, where they operated the business until selling in the late 80s to Letty Valdez, who has kept the tradition of a convenience store at the same location for nearly 60 years. In the mid-90s, he began a 10-year employment with Civil Service at LAFB. He retired on July 30, 2005, and had not yet begun to enjoy the long awaited years of retirement when he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Guadalupe T. Sanchez and Arnulfo Sanchez Jr. Survivors include his wife; a son, Adam and wife, Shari, of Amarillo; two daughters, Julie Anne Martin and husband, Major Paul, of Yorktown, Va., and Lori Anne Jonas and husband, 2nd Lt. Jozsef of LAFB, Del Rio; four grandchildren, Rachel Anne, Theresa Anne, Cody Allen and Maria Anne; his loving sister, Ernestina Tyler and husband, Wilson; three nieces; a nephew; his loving cousin, who is known and loved by all, the matriarch of the family, Edelmira "Mimi" Carvajal; and a sister-in-law, Elida Carvajal. The family suggests memorials be donations of groceries to the local food bank for those who are in need because Alfonso was always compassionate for those who are hungry, making regular trips to Acuna, Mexico, with food and supporting "Feed the Children" program. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Samuel Fine ARLINGTON - Dr. Samuel Fine, 87, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, in Dallas. Arrangements were by Arlington Funeral Home. Dr. Fine was born in St. Paul, Minn., and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Dental School. His family relocated to Amarillo in 1952, where Dr. Fine was stationed with the United States Dental Corps at Amarillo Air Base. Upon discharge, Dr. Fine practiced dentistry in Amarillo for more than 25 years. He served as president of Temple B'Nai Israel, Llano Cemetery Board and was active in many community-based organizations. After leaving Amarillo, Dr. Fine moved to Cuba, N.M., where he took a post as head of the Indian Dental Clinic with the Presbyterian Medical Service. Upon retirement, he relocated to Arlington. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helene. Survivors include two sons, Tom Fine and wife, Judy, of Westlake Village, Calif., and David Fine of Fort Worth; a daughter, Linda Potts and husband, Tom, of Arlington; and five grandchildren, Jason Fine, Lisa Fine, Ryan Potts and wife, Liz, Leslie Potts and Robert Potts.
