Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Winfred Moore officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Howard Andrew Chamblin was born May 13, 1969, in Lubbock to Ed and Caroline Chamblin. He moved with his family to Amarillo when he was 3 weeks old. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1987 where he was active on the golf team, the Latin Club and the academic decathalon program. He always considered his AHS calculus teacher, Dale Martin, to be his first mentor. He also loved music, studying keyboard at WTAMU and under the tutelage of Amarillo Symphony Conductor Robert Bernhardt. In 1991 he graduated from Rice University with a degree in mathematics. He started his Ph.D. program at Oxford University before he was invited to move to Cambridge University to study with the world- famous theoretical physicist, Professor Steven Hawking, widely proclaimed as Einstein's heir. Under Professor Hawking's tutelage, he obtained a Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1997. Returning to the United States, he did a three-year post-doctoral study at MIT, before taking a position at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2000. While living in the Southwest, he took great pride in climbing all of the Fourteeners in Colorado. As part of the Hawking Group, he published more than 30 adjudicated papers on the subjects of general relativity and the origins of the universe. He delivered these papers at conferences around the world, including Israel, France and Switzerland. He loved research but he also loved lecturing and teaching, once receiving a standing ovation for a lecture he gave at the University of Chicago. In 2003 he moved to the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky where he was assistant professor and guest lecturer in physics, at the time of his death. Dr. Chamblin is survived by his parents, Ed and Caroline Chamblin of Amarillo; his grandfather, Andrew Warren Stowe of Amarillo; a brother, Jonathan Chamblin of Bernalillo, N.M.; an aunt and uncle, Joan and J.G. Serrata and cousins James Serrata, Edward Serrata, Lucinda Serrata Roman and Janine Serrata Tudoni, all of San Francisco; as well as cousins Kim Galloway Holston and Mark Galloway of Amarillo and Rhonda Boyce of Austin. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be to the physics or music programs at West Texas A&M University. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sherry Lee Hays Sherry Lee Hays, 52, of Glenn Heights died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. Sherry was born Nov. 28, 1953, in Hitchen, England, and came to the United States in 1954. She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Lee Harmon. Survivors include her husband, Fred; a son, John of Glenn Heights; her mother, June Harmon of Amarillo; two brothers, Ray and wife Pam of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., and David and wife Regina of Mansfield; and several uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family suggests memorials be to the cancer society for the research of sarcoma cancer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bobbie E. Clark Bobbie E. Clark, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with Glen Walton officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Mr. Clark was born July 6, 1922, in Leonard and was raised in Lubbock. He married Dorothy Aldrich in 1946. She passed away in 1964. He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He moved to Amarillo in 1952 and purchased the Amarillo Auto Auction. He was a major influence in the automobile business in Amarillo for many years. In 1958 he opened Economy Motors which included Studebaker, Renault, Jaguar, Diamler Benz, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Austin America, Morris Minor, Hillman, M.G., Austin Healey and Amphicar. In 1962 he established Car City where he remained in the automobile business until his retirement. His son and grandson continue in the auto business today. He married Bettye Tomlinson in 1966 in Amarillo. In 1988 he and his son returned to the automobile auction business when they opened USA Auto Auction. He received numerous awards from the Amarillo Exchange Club for community service. He was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Lester Tomlinson in 2001. He is survived by a large family and many friends including his wife, Bettye Clark; two sons, Bobby Dale Clark and wife Debbie of Amarillo and David Tomlinson and wife Marian of Gruver; a daughter, Marshi Lair and husband Greg of Canyon; a brother, Jerry Clark and wife Betty of Arlington; a treasured friend, Carol Diaz of Amarillo; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the gazebo in Memorial Park. Mrs. Devoy was a former resident of Amarillo. She was married to Gerald Devoy for 19 years. Albert Ray Gregory Albert Ray Gregory, 85, of Amarillo died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Gregory was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Johnson County. He was a retiree of the Amarillo School System and lived in Amarillo most of his life. Albert was a resident of Georgia Manor Nursing Home since 1991, and will be missed very much by the staff and other residents and families of Georgia Manor. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Ray and Myrtie Allice Gregory; and a sister, Pauline Russett. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1933 and was honored in 2005 for being one of the oldest living graduates of Plainview High School. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Harris was a resident of Amarillo since 1971 and was a partner in J & E Wholesale Floral Co. He previously lived in Pampa, San Angelo, Lubbock, Conchas Dam, N.M., and Albuquerque, N.M. Mr. Harris married Cecilia Struve Nisbet in 1941. She preceded him in death in 1986. He also was preceded in death by a son, Carey D. Nisbet in 1977; and a brother, Curtis D. Harris in 2003. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Shewbert was born in Seneca, Mo., and was a resident of Amarillo for 59 years before moving to Boerne two years ago. She worked for Potter County for 15 years and retired as director of the welfare department. Mrs. Shewbert was a charter member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. She married James H. Shewbert on Aug. 4, 1945, in Amarillo. He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1988. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Shewbert and wife Derenda of Boerne and Gary Shewbert and wife Phyllis of Bushland; a sister, Naomi Woodard of Rio Rancho, N.M.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Jack was born Jan. 30, 1936, in Shamrock to Clay and Veda York. He was a talented athlete who excelled as a quarterback at Shamrock High School. He was awarded a four-year scholarship to WTSU where he earned a bachelor's and two master's degrees in education. He loved to brag about beating TTU twice during his years at WT. He coached and taught in several area schools, as well as coaching one year under Joe Kerbel at WTSU. His aim was not only to win games but also to build character in his students and athletes. He began his career in administration at Canyon High School and later became superintendent of Littlefield Schools. Jack married Georgette Rohan on Sept. 27, 1959, in Panhandle. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and was a member of the Baptist church. He loved his family, friends and seeing his former students. He enjoyed fishing and collecting fishing equipment. Survivors include his wife of 46 years; a son, Brent York of Amarillo; a daughter and son-in-law, Lyndy and Greg Ashford and grandson, Caleb, of Dallas; and a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Donna York of San Antonio. Mrs. Freeman was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Lawrenceville, Ill., to Frank and Lena Anderson. She married Maurice Freeman on Nov. 4, 1933. She lived in Dumas, where she attended school and worked in a local beauty shop until 1940, when she and her family moved to California. They returned to Dumas in 1952. She and her husband worked at the Piggly Wiggly Market until his death in 1959. She moved back to California in 1962. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice P. Freeman; her parents, Frank and Lena Anderson, longtime Moore County residents; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Aline Anderson; and a grandson, David Lynn Raymond. He preceded her in death on April 29, 1964. She moved to Canadian in 1941 from Wellington, Kan. Alice was a waitress at local restaurants and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers. He attended school in Clayton, graduated from Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Mo., and served in the Army during the Korean War. A memorial service to celebrate Christian's life will be at noon Saturday in Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home Northwest Highway Chapel. Christian Keith Griffith was born Jan. 22, 1965, on a cold snowy day to Roger and Elwanda Griffith in Amarillo. Christian always enjoyed cold weather. Christian passed into a spiritual awakening on Feb. 6, 2006. Music was his life. Christian was assistant organist of First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo at 14 years of age and Outstanding Boy in the ninth grade in the Austin Junior High School Band. Additional recognition came in the form of Who's Who among American High School Students and the award of a Nordan Music Scholarship to attend Texas Christian University, majoring in organ performance. Education extended into graduate studies at Southern Methodist University and Westminster Choir College where he was named university organist at Princeton University Chapel. Study continued in 2000 and 2001 at Cours D'Interpretation de Romainmotier, Switzerland, with Marie-Claire Alain, Guy Bovet and Rodulf Lutz. Master Classes were also attended at Kings College, England. Christian was an avid traveler and toured the British Isles and the European mainland on numerous occasions. His work experience included Assistant Organist/Handbell Director at University Christian Church in Fort Worth, Organist/Director of Handbells at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Organist at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church in Irving, Director of Music and organist for 12 years at Central Christian Church in Dallas, organist at Temple Emanu-El in Dallas and organist at Third Church of Christ, Scientist in Dallas. The family wishes to recognize all of the extended members of the Griffith/Hollars and Smith/Spraberry families that have been so supportive of Christian over these 41 years.
