Brown Byron B. Brown, 76, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40 with Dr. Winfred Moore, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Brown was born April 30, 1929, in Armstrong County to James Franklin and Dora Bruce Brown. He was retired as a fireman dispatcher from Central Fire Department after 36 years. He was also involved with the RAs, a Cub Scout leader and drove a church bus when his sons were young. He was a faithful supporter of The Neighborhood Sunday School, an outreach program of Second Baptist Church. He married Betty Ruth Harris on Feb. 15, 1951, in Clovis, N.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Brown, on Jan. 1, 2006; and a daughter, Jan Elizabeth Kaler on March 31, 1994. Survivors include three sons, Jim Bob Brown of Amarillo, Paul Brown of Henderson, Nev., and Bill Brown of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Kay Elliott and Luann Everitt, both of Amarillo; two brothers, Meredith Brown of Stratford and Thurman Brown of Amarillo; 21 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. She met Delbert Marquardt in Camp Maxey, and they married on May 31, 1944, in Hugo, Okla. She worked for J.C. Penney for more than 30 years, and was a member of J.C. Penney's retiree group. She was also a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church, and was active in the Solo Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her parents, George M. She was a member of San Jacinto United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and also enjoyed serving as a mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to Emory C. "Red" Stone, who preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2000. She worked as a secretary in several places prior to her retirement. He married Eileen Jenkins on Dec. 26, 1950, in Garden City, Kan. They moved to Canadian in 1960 from Garden City. He was an oil field driller, a member of the VFW and was a Catholic. She attended schools in Frederick, graduating from high school in 1924. She joined her family in White Deer and soon married J. Wade Duncan on Aug. 9, 1924. After 72 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in August 1996. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Denice Barnard and H.P. "Buss" Barnard Jr.; and two sisters, Edna Barnard and Elizabeth Thompson. "Flute" Hutsell SILVERTON - Flunoy E. "Flute" Hutsell, 73, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in Amarillo. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Silverton Church of Christ with James Mayfield, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Silverton Cemetery by Chancellor Funeral Home. Mr. Hutsell died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at SCCI Hospital in Amarillo, where he had been a patient for two days. He was a patient at BSA for five days prior to that. He was born Aug. 10, 1932, at the home of his parents, Robert Clyde and Nancy Manemma Riddell Hutsell in the Haylake community near Silverton. The nickname, "Flute," was given to him when he was a little boy. He started school at Haylake Community School, but transferred to Silverton Schools two weeks later. He graduated from Silverton High School in 1950. He played football and was voted to the All-District and All-Regional teams. He attended Hardin-Simmons University until March 1951, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He married Junis Mercer on Sept. 1, 1952, in Clovis, N.M. They lived in Amarillo and Canyon where he attended West Texas State University and majored in business. They returned to Silverton and Flute was employed by L.E. Davis Drilling Co. After a short time, Flute engaged in farming with his father until 1958 when he received the appointment as rural mail carrier for route one out of Silverton. In 1960 Flute became the service agent for Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Co. and established Hutsell Insurance Agency. He was a charter member of the Texas EMT Association and volunteered for Silverton EMS. He was one of the delegation instrumental in bringing the first ambulance to Silverton. He served his community as a fireman for 24 years. He was the fire chief of Silverton Volunteer Fire Department, which voted him "Fireman of the Year" awards in 1975 and 1991. He was an instructor at the Canyon Fire School and was a member of the board of directors of the Plains Federal Credit Union in Plainview. He served as Scoutmaster for Silverton Boy Scouts for seven years. He was a member of Silverton City Council from May 1988 until May 2004, a total of 16 years. Flute served on the board of Mackenzie Municipal Water Authority from December 1976 until March 1985. He was a member of Silverton Church of Christ. He was a scuba diver and enjoyed water and snow skiing. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark; a brother, Riddell; and a sister, Clynell. Survivors include his wife, Junis of Silverton; a son, Scott Hutsell of Edmond, Okla.; a daughter, Colleen Sternberger of Garden City, Kan.; a nephew whom he considered a son, Rick Hutsell of Silverton; two brothers, Esdell Hutsell of Silverton and Joedell Hutsell of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Matthew and Marcus Hutsell, Levi and Shanique Hutsell and Robin Sternberger- Aviles; and a number of nieces and nephews. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Myrtle Ruth Steger BORGER - Myrtle Ruth Steger, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in Amarillo. She grew up in Estelline, where she attended schools until the sixth grade. She then self-taught herself and took her GED, testing above the national average. She attended Hutchinson County Business College, where she received her diploma. She married Clarence Alford Webb on May 21, 1938, in Claude, Texas. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., and as a bookkeeper for Russell's Stationery Co. and First National Bank. She spent her life helping and serving others, especially aged individuals, children and the poor. She was a compassionate advocate for the ill and for people in need. Along with her husband, she practiced Christian love. She had a tough exterior and a caring heart. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, on March 14, 1999; a brother, J.B. Webster; and granddaughter, Dona Bradley. Melba was principal of the first school for the severely mentally handicapped at Amarillo ISD, and in 1968 they moved to Lubbock where she continued to teach special education for Lubbock ISD until she retired in 1989.
