Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. She was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Oklahoma City. She married William DeWitt Sloan in 1946 in North Hollywood, Calif., where they raised four children. She moved to Amarillo in 1960 and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Robert Bruce Sloan and David William Sloan; and a brother, Robert Irby. Survivors include a son, John D. Sloan and wife Lauren of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Anne Hargrave and husband Terry of Amarillo; a brother, William Arthur Clarke Jr. of Wimberley; and five grandchildren, David, Stephen, Meredith, Halley Anne and Peter. Seventh Ave., Amarillo, TX. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nina Smith Alford Nina Smith Alford, 89, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with Darrel D. Fincher, pastor, officiating. Eulogist will be her nephew, the Rev. Climmie Smith, of Lompoc, Calif. Mrs. Alford was born Nov. 13, 1916, to the parentage of Alonzo and Versie Austin Smith in Clarksville, (Red River County) Texas. The youngest of eight children, she grew up and attended schools in Clarksville. She married Delbert "Del" Alford on Dec. 23, 1935, in Clarksville, and to this union four daughters were born and one grandson reared. Mrs. Alford was a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church for more than 43 years, where she served as a deaconess and worked with the South-Side Circle of the WMS for many years. She was a burial policy agent for Richardson Burial Association of Texarkana until its closing in the late 1960s, and later became burial policy representative for the late Mr. Clifford Austin of Austin Funeral Home. Mrs. Alford was also a sales representative for Lucky Heart Cosmetics for more than 50 years, from the mid-1950s until her death. She was also a former member of the North Star-Electa Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years in 1992; a daughter, Valene Mims in 1986; two grandsons; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include three daughter, Pearlene Brown, Versie Moore-Skinner and Lillie P. Miller, all of Amarillo; four grandsons, Delbert "D.L." Moore of the home, Leroy Mims Jr. and Joel E. Miller Jr., both of Amarillo, and Leonard Mims and wife Tasya of Las Vegas; two granddaughters, Merri McClain of Amarillo and Wanda Mims of Arlington; a brother, the Rev. J.E. Smith of Memphis; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Osage St. Mrs. Ballard was born Sept. 20, 1950, in Amarillo, where she was raised. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Ballard was an LVN for many years. Later on in her life she was a supervisor for Levi Strauss, where she made many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Raylene Spangler. Survivors include her husband, Steve; a daughter, Cathy and husband Khamnoy Daosavanh; a son, Johnny and wife Maria Spangler; two sisters, Barbara Martin and Ginger and husband R.W. Georgia St. Eighty-five years in body, age 10 at heart, Homer Damron was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1938. He loved to plan and attend class reunions. Homer was in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was joke teller extraordinaire. Homer was the master collector. He could find treasures anywhere. He saw value in everything. He loved music and always had a song in his heart. Homer could be found singing in the choir every Sunday at The Church at Quail Creek. He taught Sunday school for many years. His favorite pastime was fishing on his "Golden Pond." Homer was a master craftsman and jewelry maker for more than 70 years. He owned and operated Damron's Jewelers for 25 years. Homer never liked to charge customers and made many pieces of jewelry for a song! Homer and Nadine, his wife of 64 years, were driving home after watching the beautiful sunset on Feb. 4 when they were involved in a car accident. Complications arose throughout the week and Homer went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 15. Survivors include his wife, Nadine Damron; a daughter, Linda Webb and husband Dean of Amarillo; two sons, Richard Damron and wife Leslie of Vancouver, Wash., and Robert Damron and wife Jeanette of Amarillo; a sister, Mary Sue Sisemore of Amarillo; four grandchildren, John Damron, Lainey Michels, Brooks Webb and Charlie Webb; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Heidi. Mr. Scott worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from 1950 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Masonic Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and a brother. He grew up in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School. He attended Amarillo College before serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Diamond Shamrock in 1988 after 32 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna, in 1984; and a son, Dennis, in 1977. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerrel Slagle on Sept. 19, 1985; and her daughter, Beth Bischel, on May 20, 2001. Hughes St. Mrs. Lynch, the youngest of three children, was born June 9, 1926, to Melvina and Brady Baldwin in Frost. She attended elementary and junior high school in Brushie Prairie. She moved to Amarillo, where she attended Patton High School. She was employed at Hilltop Elementary School in the cafeteria for a number of years. She then became an entrepreneur trying her hand at many things. She distributed Jet and Ebony magazines for a number of years. Her next endeavor was as an insurance agent for Atlanta Life Insurance Co., where she won many awards. She also distributed Home Interiors. She ended her long working career retiring from Amarillo Credit Bureau. Mrs. Lynch was very dedicated to the Lord, working faithfully in the church. She was a member of Galilee Church of God in Christ, pastor, John Bowser. She served as the Secretary of Sunday School, Home & Foreign Mission President, Gift Committee President, Sunday school teacher and the Announcement Clerk. She loved traveling to church conventions and taking cruises with her daughter. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her husbands. Survivors include two daughters, Gail Lee and husband David and Ruth Ellen Lynch of Amarillo; two sons, Bobby Ray Cumby and Curtis Stevenson of Amarillo; a sister, Jerolene Wilson and husband Leo of Amarillo; a brother, Marshall Baldwin of Denver; four grandchildren, Darius and DaMarcus Blackshere, Brandi Townsend and Christi Bender of Mexia; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Melissia Godbolt was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Point. Her parents were Dan and Annie Mae Miller. She attended and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Sandy Point. She came to Amarillo more than 65 years ago and became a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was a very faithful member of this church for more than 65 years, serving as Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday school, Junior class Sunday school teacher, member of the Trustee Board, President of Mary Circle and Senior Choir. She was a charter member of the Black Historical Culture Center, Board Member and Membership Drive Chair. She was a member of the Panhandle Queen Court of Calanthe No. 297 and teacher in the Progressive West Texas District Association. She was employed by the Braudt and Virginia Blackburn families for 32 years. Survivors include three grandsons, John Miller Jr., Darryl Miller and Marcus Willis, all of Amarillo; three brothers, Dan Miller of Seaside, Calif., and Sy F. Miller and Alfred Miller, both of Houston; a granddaughter, Jaye L. McSwain, 87, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006. Graveside memorial services by family members will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Harold V. McSwain was born July 4, 1918, in Ellisville, Miss., to Eddith Stringer McSwain and Angus Parker McSwain. Harold McSwain married Jeanne Ansley on March 12, 1948, in Amarillo. They had two children, Kate McSwain of Bellingham, Wash., and Vance McSwain of Amarillo. Serving in World War II, Capt. McSwain was a member of the Texas 36th Division and served in the Africa-Italy Campaign. He received the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the Victory Medal and the Defense Medal. In Italy he led a battalion in the battle of Santa Maria Infante. Capt. McSwain's courageous actions are documented in the book, "Small Unit Actions," published by the Historical Division of the U.S. War Department. Mr. McSwain retired in 1985 from the Amarillo Public School District after 35 years as a teacher and a counselor. He was a life member of the National Education Association and The Texas Classroom Teachers Association. Survivors include his wife Jeanne; a daughter, Kate McSwain and husband Christopher Pauley of Bellingham; a son, Vance McSwain and wife Pam of Amarillo; and three grandsons, Brent Shriver of Bellingham, Ryan McSwain and wife Tricia of Lewisville and Evan McSwain of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jesus Morin Meraz Jesus Morin Meraz, 77, of Amarillo died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, in Shamrock. Joe Frazier was born Dec. 3, 1950, and raised in Hugoton, Kan. He graduated in Hugoton in 1970. Joe attended a technical trade school in Oklahoma. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. After his military service he returned to Amarillo, where he worked at Cooper Woodruff, Taylor Petroleum and Andrew Transport. He lived in Perryton for 39 years, moving from Oklahoma. He married Peggy Sawyers on May, 11, 1946, in Coldwater, Kan. He was an agent telegrapher and worked for Santa Fe Railway for 41 years. He was a Master Mason and past Worshipful Master of Perryton Masonic Lodge No. 910. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; a brother; and his twin brother. Mrs. Underwood was born in 1912 in Mangum, Okla., to Joe and Pearl Mills. For more than 80 years Lucille was a resident of Wheeler. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Marvin, in 1989; their infant twin sons, Danny and Dennis; and six siblings.
