Johnson FRIONA - Edith M. Johnson, 85, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Friona United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Patterson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Friona Cemetery by Blackwell Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson was born April 5, 1920, in Ringling, Okla., to David and Eva Blanche Collier Moseley. She had lived in Friona for 79 years, moving from Oklahoma. She married Herschel Winston Johnson on Sept. 26, 1942, in Clovis, N.M. He died Aug. 3, 1988. She was a member of Friona United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters, Barbara Ann Johnson on Jan. 27, 1952, and Karol Sue Johnson on May 8, 1953. Survivors include a son, Joe Bob Johnson of Friona; a daughter, Linda Kay VanValkenburg of Englewood, Colo.; two brothers, Hugh Moseley and Jack Moseley, both of Farwell; and six grandchildren. Mrs. King was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Fisher County. She married Thurman Lewis T.L King on March 29, 1947. Jerry loved being a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She was also an avid golfer. She also enjoyed bridge and being a member of the Red Hat Society. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 16, 1993, and two brothers, David Levens and Will Levens. He attended schools in Mexico. He married Maria Salas on Nov. 8, 1956, in Springlake. They moved to Canadian in 1979 from Del Rio. He worked as a laborer. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by a son, Jose Roberto Quiroz on Nov. 7, 1984. Dr. Katz was born Nov. 6, 1944, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Sylvia and Irving Rothstein. She married Paul Katz on Aug. 9, 1968, in Hiawatha, Kan. She attended Spring Valley, N.Y., High School, received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1966 and earned three graduate degrees in anthropology from the University of Kansas. She had wanted to be an anthropologist from age 6, when she began watching the 6 a.m. Sunrise Semester classes in anthropology. She taught anthropology at the college level for 15 years, achieving the rank of associate professor. She also served as director of the Division of Business Administration, Social Sciences and Multidisciplinary Studies at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. She was principal investigator of PRIAM, a cultural and natural resources consulting firm she established in 1985. Dr. Katz conducted fieldwork in prehistoric and historic archeology for more than 30 years. Her primary interests included the study of human adaptation at the mountain-plains periphery, archeology of arid lands and lithic technology. She conducted inventory, assessments and mitigation projects in archeology for state and federal agencies, private companies and individuals. Her recent work included the analysis of excavations at a Late Plains Village site in the southeastern Texas Panhandle and a monograph about an intensive survey of Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument and adjacent portions of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. She researched and created a large traveling exhibit on the natural and cultural history of the playa lakes region, which received the American Association of Museums Excellence in Exhibition in 2005 for its content and innovative design. At the time of her death, she was the editor of the Plains Anthropologist, an academic peer-review journal concerned with the anthropology and archeology of the Great Plains of North America, an area covering 13 states and three Canadian provinces. She was active in the Panhandle Archeological Society and was a member of Temple BNai Israel in Amarillo. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors. Mr. Nash was born Sept. 5, 1909, in Guymon, the son of Margaret Clark Nash and Chester Ashley Nash. He graduated from Guymon High School with the class of 1926 and attended Kansas University, where he served as president of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was married to Emogene Davis in 1931. They had a daughter, Diane Nash. Emogene and their infant son died in 1938. He was united in marriage to Floy Marie Mickey Dixon on Jan. 7, 1940. A World War II veteran, Howard served as a Navy pilot instructor. After the War, Howard returned to the family business, Nash Brothers Implement Co. and farming and ranching. Always active in the church and community, Howard was a longtime member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church, Guymon, served on the Memorial Hospital board for many years, was a 32nd Degree Mason, Guymon Lodge No. 335, AF&AM and was a member of the Guymon Lions Club. Howard and Mickey moved to Gruver, Texas, in 1968, where they made their home for 30 years. In Gruver, they were members of Gruver United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife and son; a sister, Mildred Daily; two brothers, Edwin Nash and Orville Nash; and a great-grandson, Matthew Fleener. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mickey; three daughters, Diane Broce of Cuchara, Colo., Nancy Meyer of Texhoma and Susan Hensley of Loveland, Colo.; a son, Howard Clark Nash Jr. of Tyler, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere Dr. Mac Roy Gasque BREVARD, N.C. - Dr. Mac Roy Gasque, 93, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Arrangements are by Moore Funeral Home. Dr. Gasque died at his home in Brevard on Feb. 17, at the age of 93. He was surrounded by his loving family, friends and devoted staff. Dr. Gasque was a specialist in the field of occupational medicine, having been certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine) in 1957. During World War II, he was a Naval Medical Officer, serving aboard the U.S. battleship USS Wyoming in the Atlantic Theater. Again during the Korean conflict, he served in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier Oriskany. In 1945, Dr. Gasque began an association with Ecusta Paper Corporation as their first medical director. Later, after Ecusta was acquired by Olin Corporation, he moved to the corporate headquarters in New York City. At the time of his retirement in 1978, Dr. Gasque was vice president and director of health affairs of Olin Corporation. Dr. Gasque was a frequent contributor to occupational medical literature. His primary interest was related to employee health and medical administration. He was a former director of the American Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. After his retirement from Olin Corporation, Dr. Gasque continued his professional career as a consultant to the legal profession in matters related to medicine and scientific litigation. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Gasque maintained a close association with the University of Virginia, from which he received his medical degree in 1944. He was named the recipient of the first Outstanding Medical Alumnus Award. He was a former president of the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association and a founding trustee of the University of Virginia Medical School Foundation and president of the Foundation from 1979 to 1990. At the time of his death, he was a trustee emeritus of the Foundation. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society and the Raven Society. In the late 1990s, Dr. Gasque and his wife, Georgia, were the sponsors and principal contributors to the establishment and furnishing of the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association Headquarters at 1111 Main St. in Charlottesville, Va. Dr. Gasque was born and reared in Asheville. He attended the Asheville public schools, where he was active in athletics. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 5l years, Olene Stafford Gasque, in August 1990. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his friends and family. "Jimpa" was especially proud of all of his grandchildren whom he loved very much. Philip was a standout athlete at Borger, competing in football, basketball and baseball. From there, he went on to a spectacular football career at West Texas State University, where he earned the prestigious title of All-American his senior year, playing on the team that went on to win the Tangerine Bowl. Philip's football career ended in Canada, where he was injured while playing with the B.C. Lions in the Canadian Football League. Philip returned to WTSU to earn his master's degree in education and began his teaching and coaching career at Horace Mann Junior High. After two years, Philip moved to Palo Duro High School, where he taught and coached as well. After five years at Palo Duro, Philip decided to retire from coaching in order to spend more time with his family. He joined the Tascosa teaching staff in 1966 and stayed there until his retirement 23 years later. He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal Griffin of Borger; his stepfather, Hugh Griffin of Borger; and a sister, Ramona Berry of Oklahoma City.
