Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in North Amarillo Church of Christ with Glen Walton and Dalton Key officiating. Burial will be in Oseola Cemetery in Butler, Okla., by Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road. Mrs. Thompson was a devoted Christian wife and mother with the love of many friends. She was a member of the North Amarillo Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Donald Thompson and wife Beth of Katy; two daughters, Betty Clague and husband Bobby of Troup and Sandra Marler and husband Dennis of Killeen; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was raised in Albuquerque, N.M., and graduated from Terrell High School. He also attended ETSU at Commerce. He received his nursing degree at Henderson College. He worked as a nurse at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. James moved to Aurora, Colo., and worked for Sloan Lake Insurance. He later moved to Amarillo due to his illness to be near his mother. He was preceded in death by his father, Ron McKay. Survivors include his mother, Juanita Arnecia McKay of Amarillo; grandmother, Helen B. Belcher of Terrell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. "Dick" Bynum I.R. "Dick" Bynum, 80, of Amarillo, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson, Dr. Winfred Moore and Dr. Chester O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Bynum was born June 6, 1925, in Wilson, Okla., and was reared in Pampa where he played football. He was recruited by WT, North Texas State University and Oklahoma State University. He attended West Texas State University. He served in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in the South Pacific. He was in the invasion of Guam, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He built airfields on Guam and Okinawa. He joined Panhandle Trailways in 1947 as a part-time employee, while a student at WTSU, where he lived in Buffalo Courts. He had continuous employment with Trailways, completing 50 years in 1997. He began his tour career driving for Dr. Ples Harper and Margaret Harper taking teachers into Mexico, and opened Trailways Tours in 1963. Mr. Bynum married Hetty Jo Tucker in September 1951 in Pampa. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Henry Brown's Men's Bible Class, a member of American Bus Association, the Phoenix Club of West Texas State University, the Buffalo Club, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee, Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Committee, and the Putt Powell Scholarship Committee. He was past president of the Downtown Amarillo Lions Club, the Greater Southwest Music Festival and the Amarillo Knife and Fork Club, and past chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Panhandle Chapter of the Texas Society to Prevent Blindness - Amarillo Chapter, the Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee, serving three terms, Amarillo Chapter of the Texas Motor Transportation - Amarillo Group, serving two terms, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce - Sports Committee, where he was most recently named Honorary Member, serving two terms, past board member of Hi-Plains Eye Bank and High Plains Food Bank and was nominated for the 7 Who Care Award. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow from Lions International. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isham R. Bynum and Hattie Lee Owens Bynum; three brothers, John, Phillip and Elmer; and a sister, Rose Ellen. He was a member of the Lions Club and an active member of First United Methodist Church when he lived in Hereford. He moved to Amarillo in 1992. He was an avid skeet shooter and bird hunter. He served in the U.S. Army and had received the Purple Heart and the combat infantryman's badge during World War II. Wayland married Helen Smith on June 24, 1945, in Summerfield. Mr. Murguia married Lucia Davalos in May 1954 in Jalisco. Mr. Murguia was a store owner in Mexico before he traveled throughout California, settling in Amarillo in 1987. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1941 and Amarillo College in 1943. Arlene was retired from Santa Fe and Affiliated Foods of Amarillo. She belonged to the Red Hat Society, Christian Women's Association, was an auxiliary member of Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wallace, in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Richard Wallace of Amarillo and Steve Wallace and wife Cindy of Savannah, Ga.; and two grandsons, James and Matthew Wallace of Savannah. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Christian Church sanctuary with Dr. John Bridwell and the Rev. David Green officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. He did not rage against the dying of the light, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust he went gentle into that good night. Roy Lewis "R.L.," 89, of Amarillo died peacefully on Feb. 21, 2006, at home, surrounded by his gathered family. Mr. Robertson was born Oct. 14, 1916, to John Finley Robertson and Ernestine Baker Robertson at their farm home in Tullahassee, Okla. The father died in the flu epidemic of 1918, and the widow moved with her two young sons to Muskogee, Okla. In 1927 she moved the little family to Amarillo, where she managed a downtown boarding house half a block from First Christian Church where the family worshipped. R. L. served the church faithfully in many ways for 79 years, from Junior Deacon, to Deacon, Elder, and Elder Emeritus. He chaired departments in the Parliament, was president of the adult Friendship Sunday School class, taught teenagers in Sunday school for 18 years and was chief cook for weekly Men's Breakfast for 56 years. He and his family attended retreats at Ceta Glen, and he and his wife were frequently voting delegates to national denominational assemblies. R.L. attended Johnson School, Central Junior High, and Amarillo High School, graduating in 1936. He later attended West Texas University extension classes in the former Early home in Amarillo. In 1940 R.L. Robertson married Pauline Durrett in First Christian Church, Amarillo. Ten children were born to this union. In 1957 the Robertsons were chosen Amarillo Family of the Year by the Globe-News. In 1960 NBC-TV selected the family for its first one-hour real-life documentary "Story of A Family," filmed at their home and broadcast in the United States, Canada, and several other countries. The couple celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2005. As a youth in the Depression, R.L. worked from an early age to help his mother financially: he sold newspapers downtown, caddied at local golf courses, picked chickens at a downtown grocery store, learned butchering on the job and in his early 20s managed a local supermarket meat department. In World War II he was beef grader and supplier for four Army Air Force bases, working through Pinkney Packing Co. of Amarillo. After the war, he again managed a local meat market. In 1950 he opened his own business, Robertson's Market on West 10th Street, expanding to a second Amarillo market and one in Claude. After 31 years with Robertson's Markets, he retired in 1981, continuing his role as a great husband, dad and grandfather "Moondad." Mr. Robertson and his wife co-authored books on the Texas Panhandle, including "Panhandle Pilgrimage," "Cowman's Country," "Tascosa" and others. For his descendants, he wrote a detailed anecdotal memoir book of his growing-up years to the time of his marriage. He was an active member of Amarillo Photographic Society for 44 years and an award winner with Master Photographer rating. He and his wife traveled extensively in the 50 states, Canada, Central America, and several continents, and their photographs have hung in many local and area exhibitions. He was a lifelong lover of nature and an advocate of environmental protection. Fishing, hunting and golf claimed his devotion He was a bird watcher, an admirer of animals , and an adventurous outdoorsman with a great interest in American Indian history and relics. He demonstrated flint arrowhead making in Amarillo and Austin classrooms. He was an expert on Swing Music and the Big Band Era. R. L. was involved in local civic activities for many years. He was on the founding boards of Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center (now Children's Rehabilitation Center), High Plains Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and Camp Friendship for underprivileged children. He took leading roles in Cub and Boy Scouts, Brownie and Girl Scouts, YMCA Indian Guides, Opportunity Houses, The Exchange Club, Amarillo High School Alumni Association, the CROP Walk and Potter County Historical Commission. He was a supporter of Boys Ranch, Children's Cottage, Faith City Mission, Wildcat Bluff and Potter/Randall Democratic Party. For 12 years, until his last illness, R. L. and his wife tutored children in Margaret Wills School for HOSTS and America's Promise programs. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother, Lloyd Robertson; a daughter, Kay Linda Robertson Savage; and a son, Kent Lewis Robertson. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roy Durrett Robertson of Austin and Neil Thomas Robertson of Amarillo; six daughters, Dr. Robyn M.Turner, Paula Jo "PJ" Pierce and husband Dr. Jack Pierce, all of Austin, Laurel Annette Robertson and husband Charles Gibson of Dripping Springs, Carrie Beth Robertson and husband Pete Meyer of Corpus Christi, Virginia Lee "Gini" Robertson-Baker and Ellen Robertson of Amarillo; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She worked at the Celanese Plant in Pampa as a secretary from 1964 until her retirement in 1982. She moved to Amarillo in 1984. She was a former member of the Panhandle Archeological Society.
