Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Emmanuel Church of God in Christ in Plainview with Elder Russell Wise, pastor, and Helen Brooks, pastor of Outcast International Ministries, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St., in Amarillo. Mr. Carter was born June 8, 1963, in Petersburg to Leroy Rosenburg and Willie Bell Carter. He was reared and attended school in Plainview, where he graduated from high school. He moved to Amarillo and worked for IBP Meat Packers before moving to Shreveport, La., several years ago. In Shreveport he worked as a butcher for Super One Grocers. He very recently returned to Amarillo. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Carter; two daughters, Jatoya Carter and Jackie Poindexter, both of Plano; his parents, Leroy Rosenburg of Long Beach, Calif., and Willie Bell Carter Brigham of Amarillo; three sisters, Erane Carter, Tammy Carter and Charlene Mor'Shay Carter, all of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, May 5, 2006 ============================================================================ Dr. Jordan Grooms Dr. Jordan Grooms, 93, of Amarillo died Wednesday, May 3, 2006. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lane Boyd and the Rev. Marty Hamrick officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Dr. Grooms was born on Oct. 21, 1912, in Greenfield, Tenn. After graduating high school and obtaining his teaching certificate, he taught at Lane College in Tennessee, after which he attended Bethel College where he met his future wife, Gladys Collins, who was his professor at the time. He proposed to her on their first date and they were married shortly after. He began seminary at Southern Methodist University in 1938 while acting as the junior pastor at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church in Dallas. After graduating seminary, he had his first assignment as an associate pastor at Polk Street United Methodist Church, after which he was assigned to the United Methodist churches in Vega, Haskell, Levelland, Lamesa, and then Big Spring in 1953. During this time, in addition to his two children, he and Gladys helped raise his two nephews and a niece. While pastor at Big Spring, he participated in the exchange pastorates program in England, and taught at Matanzas Bay University in Cuba during the summer. In 1956, he received his doctorate in divinity from McMurry University. In 1961 he was assigned to Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo where he remained for eight years. He was subsequently assigned as the District Superintendent for Brownfield and Big Spring after which he served as the pastor in Hereford. After retiring in 1976 from the Methodist Church, Dr. Grooms was involved in many interfaith ministries, and for more than a decade, in the late '70s and '80s, he was the Director of Christian Formation for the Catholic Diocese of Amarillo. He was an ecumenical speaker in Rome at an international conference on the Gospel Insights on the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as in Austin at various meetings of Texas Catholic Conference. He additionally cherished his involvement with the Incarnate Word Convent in San Antonio, where he was on the board of directors and was given the privilege of honorary membership. He and his wife, Gladys, often shared their antique collection of art portraying the Madonna, Mary and Child. He drew together Christians throughout the Panhandle by offering religious education classes in area churches, and in the last 15 years of his life, was the beloved teacher of an ecumenical Bible study held in homes here in Amarillo. The final years of his ministry also included being a dedicated bible teacher at Life Challenge, a men's recovery center on Hope Road. Dr. Grooms celebrated his 65th year of ordained ministry in 2005. All those who crossed paths with Dr. Grooms remember his faithful tolerance for people and his constant quest for knowledge and learning. He was a revered teacher of the gospels whose ministry spread to Mexico, England, Spain and across the United States. He will be immortalized the hearts of many as a great apostle of love, and his teachings and influence will continue through many lifetimes. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Collins Grooms; his son, Dr. Barton Collins Grooms; his daughter-in-law, Suzanne Simmons Grooms; and his niece, Candice Watson. "Gumpy" Marquardt, 80, of Amarillo died Thursday, May 4, 2006. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Washington Avenue Christian Church with Jim Shelburne, pastor, officiating. He married the love of his life, Robbie Ashford, on May 31, 1944, in Hugo, Okla. Delbert worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 25 years, the Amarillo Globe-News for several years and United Supermarket until his retirement in January. He was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church, and was active in the men's Sunday school class. Delbert was a very kindhearted person, and will be greatly missed by many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Robbie, in February 2006; his parents, Hubert and Roxie Marquardt; and a daughter in-law, DeAnne Marquardt. He was past president of Blue Grass, member of Optimist Club and was a little league coach. He married Thelma Florence Fody Tandy on Jan. 18,1947, in Hot Springs, N.M. In 1939, she and her husband moved to Channing, where they raised their daughters. She adored her family. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, P.W., in 1996; two sisters; and a brother.
