Murphy, 68, of Amarillo died Monday, May 15, 2006. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Dana Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Murphy was born Jan. 7, 1938, in Lubbock, the youngest of four children of Claude R. and Nola Lemons. Wanda was 4 years old when her family moved to Amarillo. Her father became a prominent painting contractor, specializing in finishing many of the finest homes in Amarillo. She attended River Road School, Horace Mann and Amarillo High School. She was a gifted athlete, excelling in basketball, volleyball and softball. She married her next door neighbor and high school sweetheart, Mike Murphy, on June 1, 1954, in Fort Sumner, N.M. She worked for a short time at Amarillo Credit Reporting until starting a family and a career as a homemaker and mother. When her children were grown, she partnered with friend Delores Richarson to form Athletic Shirt and Lettering. Later she sold her interest to Delores and started The Trophy Shop, Etc. with her daughter, Sheri, in Wolflin Village. She retired and closed the business in 1993. Wanda had four intense passions in life. They were her family, bowling, gardening and the Christmas season. Her first and greatest love was her family. She was always involved with her children in any of the activities they undertook. As her family grew with marriages and births, so did her love and devotion. She was the model maternal figure, developing family get-togethers at every opportunity, from reunions to birthdays, to holidays, and just family cookouts at her home. These were joyous occasions for her to have her family around her. She was exceptionally pleased that her family all chose to make Amarillo their home where she could see them often and occasionally spoil them with her love. Her second love was the sport of bowling. She became involved in league bowling in the early 1960s and became quite proficient in the sport. At one time, she was invited and joined the Women's Professional Bowling Association, but the travel and the time away from her family was too much and she left the organization. She became involved at the local level with the leadership and became a league officer. She was elected league secretary of the Dudes and Janes Bowling League and remained in this position for more than 25 years. She was also elected as a director of the Amarillo Women's Bowling Association, and then served as vice president. Later, she became city secretary/treasurer and was responsible for keeping the records of membership, achievements, awards and scores of 800 to 1,000 women bowlers of Amarillo. During her career, she was given numerous awards and recognitions. Among these were Secretary of the Year, Woman Bowler of the Year, Hall of Fame recognition, and Life Member award. She loved the many friends and relationships she developed over the years. Her third passion was gardening. She spent many hours planning, developing and working in her yards. She took classes and became a Master Gardener with the Texas Educational Extension Agency program. She was continually developing new flower beds around her home and an out-of-town trip was not complete without bringing a new plant or even a rock to be placed in her gardens. Spring always brought a new abundance of blooms and plants. She was also president of the Happy Homemakers Extension Club in Rolling Hills community at the time of her passing. Her fourth passion was Christmastime. She loved decorating the interior and exterior of her home for the season. After the traditional family Thanksgiving dinner, the entire family was involved in removing her many boxes of decorations she had accumulated over the years from their storage spaces and sorting them out in the garage floor. The exterior of her home has won Best Lighting Award on two occasions. The interior of her home normally had three full-sized decorated trees and every wall, table and shelf was adorned for Christmas. It is only fitting that her passing occur during the spring and close to Mother's Day, a day set aside to honor a special and revered Mother. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her "Nanaw." Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Mike E. Murphy; two daughters, Teri and husband Wayne Richardson and Sheri Oberbeck; a son, Michael Murphy Jr. and wife Amie; her grandchildren, Kris and wife Brina Askins, Tyson and wife Jennifer Askins, Amy Askins, D.J. Oberbeck of Lubbock, Nicole and husband Levi Randall, Tatum and husband Erik Garvin and Caitlin, Megan and Meara Murphy; great-grandchildren, Kristian, Brody and Riley Askins and Ryne Garvin; a sister, Catherine and husband James "Dakota" Lusby; and many cousins, nephews and nieces who were a significant part of her family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Texhoma Church of Christ with Ron Eggleston, minister, officiating. Burial will be in the Texhoma Cemetery by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home. She was born July 26, 1909, to Tom and Jessie Widick Clayton two miles east of Texhoma on the family farm. She graduated from Texhoma High School in 1927 as valedictorian and attended PAI at Goodwell. Janie taught school five years, four of them in Texhoma. For more than a decade she was recognized by the Texhoma Alumni Association as their oldest member. She married Edward H. Harland on July 26, 1932, and set up housekeeping mile south of the Clayton farm. In 1939 after the loss of her father and brother, she and Ed bought their own farm two miles east and four miles north of Texhoma. They moved her mother in with them, and Jessie made her home with them until her death in 1959. Janie was a homemaker during a time that required a lot of hard work before the era of fast foods and microwaves. She always cooked for her family as well as farm laborers during harvest times. She had milk cows on the farm which she continued to milk until she was almost 80 years old. A large garden was always in her summer projects which required watering and tending as well as the canning of the produce. Home-grown fried chicken was a main part of many of the summertime meals that her family enjoyed after a hard day's work. "Janie is living proof that hard work won't kill you," Jerry Harland said at her 90th birthday party. Janie was an active member of Texhoma Church of Christ where she was a Bible scholar and teacher. She saw to it that not only did her family attend church but in her free time at home, she sent World Bible School correspondence courses to India and Africa. She furnished hundreds of Bibles to these students so they could know about Jesus and God. After the passing of her husband in 1980 she did more traveling. She especially loved the trips she took with her daughters and grandchildren to historical points of interest. She was an avid genealogist and founding member of the Texhoma Historical and Genealogical Society. Besides being a major contributor to the "Panhandle Pioneer" 11 book series, she wrote seven family history books and one book of poetry. One of her most outstanding honors was being named "Pioneer Day Queen" in 1994 and the second honor was having her family chosen as Oklahoma Panhandle State University's Family of the Year in 2000. She was a founding member of Keenagers at Texhoma which gave her opportunity to use her love and keen skills for playing games. The domino game, forty-two, was her favorite. She was proceeded in death by her parents; a brother, Sam; her husband; and two grandchildren, Kendall Harland and Shielda Harland. She is survived by four sons: Edward Lee, Kenneth and wife Carmen, and Fred and wife Claudia, all of Texhoma, and Ernest and wife Bonnie of Oxford, Miss.; four daughters, Janelle Eggleston and husband Evan and Lorraine Baird and husband Jim, all of Hooker, Loretta Farabee and husband Richard of Texhoma and Kathy Switser and husband Larry of Stratford, Texas; 24 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
