James Jesse P. James, 59, of Amarillo died Monday, June 5, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home Benton Chapel, 4180 Canyon Drive, with Charlie Cox officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery East. Mr. James was born May 5, 1947, in Jacksonville and passed away Monday, June 5, 2006, in Dallas awaiting a heart transplant. He lived most of his life in Amarillo and attended Amarillo High School. He married Mary French on March 13, 1964, in Amarillo. Mr. James worked for ASARCO for 29 years before retiring in January. He loved his family, being "Papa" and "Poppy" to his grandchildren, and watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events. He loved watching NASCAR racing and was a great fan of No. 6 Mark Martin. He was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Jesse P. James Jr.; and a grandson, Ren Todd Smith. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Amarillo; three daughters, Kalena Smith and husband Bobby and Karla Cowan, all of Amarillo, and Kathy Smith and husband Larry of Floydada; a son, Kurry James of Amarillo; a brother, Lance Landers of California; a cousin whom he thought of as a brother, Sam West of Houston; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Austin, Amber, Lynnde, Kylie, Hayden, Kyle and "Peanut"; and a brother-in-law, Derral French of Amarillo. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Smith was born April 7, 1935, in Fairview, Okla. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. He was a police sergeant from 1966 to 1976 with the El Reno, Okla., police department and served as the captain of the police pistol team. He moved to Amarillo in 1980 and worked in the oil industry until retirement. After retirement he worked for Comanche Trail Golf Course as a marshal. He was preceded in death by two sisters; and two brothers. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Marjorie Sue Furlow Molden Harris was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Corsicana to O.A. and Alberta Ruth Furlow. She was the fourth child of 11 born to this union. After graduating from high school in Altus, Okla., Marjorie married James Reginald Molden. They relocated to Amarillo in 1951. As a member of the Church of God in Christ since early childhood, Marjorie received a strong Christian foundation which she passed on to her eight children. She was active in her church community and took special pleasure in Christian fellowship until beset by failing health in 2002. In addition to being a loving and supportive mother, she managed to work outside the home. Most notably she continued her education while teaching in the Head Start program in Amarillo ISD. Marjorie loved to fish and seized every opportunity to put her hook into the water. She also loved to cook and was well-known for her homemade pastries made from scratch, which always put a smile on the faces of everyone during family gatherings and holidays. She was a switchboard operator for Northwest Texas Hospital for many years. She worked 16 years for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and was a member of the Jolly Dozen Club of Amarillo. Mrs. Reid was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Rex Reid, in 1957; daughters, Donna Reid Bryan and Mary Reid Koch; a son, Donald R. Amarillo Globe-News, June 8, 2006 Canyon Sherry Hendricks McDowell Sherry Hendricks McDowell, 70, of Canyon died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Assembly of God Church with Terry Callis, pastor, and the Rev. Billy Nickell, pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Sherry Hendricks McDowell was born April 16, 1936, in Hardeman County to Lewis and Lettie Leonard Hendricks. She attended Norwalk Elementary School in Norwalk, Calif,, and Quanah public schools, where she graduated in 1954. After high school graduation, she worked two years at the ASC office in Quanah before entering West Texas State University in 1956. She received her bachelor of business administration degree in 1960. She worked in the Randall County District Clerk's office until September 1966, when she began her teaching career in Happy High School. She retired after teaching 26 years and worked as part-time secretary at the Assembly of God Church in Canyon for nine years before fully retiring. She led student groups to Europe in '75, '76, '78, '80, '82, '84, and '88. She returned to London in '93 and toured Brazil in '98. She was a member of TSTA, TBEA, TAJE and CRTA. In 1991, she was awarded a lifetime membership in Texas Association of Journalism Educators for her work as yearbook advisor. In 1993, she was named Taylor Publishing Co.'s yearbook advisor of the year. She was a member of Canyon First Assembly (joined in 1957). Mr. Carr was born Nov. 6, 1925, in Hamlin, W.Va., to Earl McKinley and Eleanor Pearl Carr. He graduated from Kermit High School in Kermit. He lived most of his life in Odessa, moving to McLean in 1963, and then to Wheeler in 1990. He worked for oil drilling companies all his life. He married Joyce Morris on Sept. 24, 1960, in Odessa. The daughter of Harley and Maude Allen Alexander, she was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Stratford. She and her family resided on a ranch northwest of Gruver. Frances later graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Ward Belmont College in Memphis, Tenn. William Richard "Buddy" Murrell and Frances Alexander were married Aug. 16, 1947, in Gruver. The young couple moved to Stillwater, Okla., and attended Oklahoma A&M. Upon their return to Gruver, the Murrells resumed operation of the family ranching and farming interests. Frances was a very active member of Gruver United Methodist Church and was an integral part of the church choir. Her love for music led her to membership in the Gruver Music Club, where she was past president and held several district offices. She was an avid bridge player and was also known for her abundant hospitality. Frances excelled at cooking and was locally famous for her delicious hot rolls. Her love for others was apparent by her devotion to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Maude Alexander; and two brothers, George and David Alexander. Dr. Dixon was born April 17, 1927 in Amarillo to Kenneth David and Frankie Mae Paxton Dixon. He attended schools in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he was accepted into The Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., later transferring to The University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of The Silver Spurs and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. While attending The University of Texas, he married Imogene Barton on April 8, 1950. After graduating, he attended and graduated from Baylor Dental School. Dr. and Mrs. Dixon moved to Dallas, where he was in private practice for more than 40 years before the couple moved to Abilene in 1994. Dr. Dixon was active in Rotary Club and Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.
