This story first appeared in the Amarillo Globe-News on July 12, 2004. Passing up an opportunity for a new experience is not something Henry Witt, 92, is accustomed to doing. From chatting up stock tips with Sam Walton, to standing in a crowd listening to Hitler give a speech, Witt has seen history. Witt, a Virginia native, moved to Europe with his family as a child. His dad was a shoemaker in Austria. Before Hitler seized power, he traveled around Germany and Witt heard one of his speeches. "I was dating a German girl at the time - blonde, typical German girl. Her dad was a captain in the brown shirts. She asked if I'd like to go see Hitler speak, and I said sure," Witt said. Later at a hotel where Witt worked in Boston, greats such as Albert Einstein gave speeches. "I never got to actually meet him, but he was there, walking around," Witt said. Just the opportunity to be at the hotel while Einstein spoke was honor enough for Witt who once even read through parts of the theory of relativity. Witt's daughter Phyllis Payne said even as a child she noticed her father's interest. "I'd go and look at the books on his night stand and they'd be books like 'Matter' or 'The Atom' and I'd close them immediately because I didn't understand a thing in them," Payne said. Payne didn't share her father's interest in books, but she followed his career path. She is general manager for the Ambassador Hotel, where she has seen her share of famous people. Witt recalled meeting Walton, founder of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Instead of just a hello, or ignoring him all together, Witt decided to gather financial advice from the Wal-Mart founder. "I asked him, 'How's your stock doing?' and he said 'Sell your soul and buy some,"' Witt said. "I bought some but not enough."
