Amarillo Globe-News http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ============================================================== Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 29, 2006 Tuesday, August 29, 2006 Elsewhere Walter Clement Kellogg DALLAS - Walter Clement Kellogg, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today in Highland Park Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sherwood Strodel officiating. Arrangements are by Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home. Mr. Kellogg, expert in agriculture and the management of fires, both real and financial, died of cancer, discovered only a few days before, on Aug. 26, 2006. It was the end of a colorful life, lived close to the earth. Born in Amarillo on Oct. 23, 1929, just as the stock market crashed in New York, Walter Kellogg found his stability, then and always, in the outdoors of North America. Hunting and fishing were more than pastimes to him. They were essential to his survival as a whole person. Walter Kellogg graduated from Amarillo High School and spent his freshman year at Tulane in New Orleans, then transferred to Oklahoma University, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and majored in business. He married Marylee Cowden of Midland on Sept. 1, 1956. After that, the business of agriculture continued to beckon him, and he returned to Amarillo to become one of the largest dryland wheat farmers in the country. Growing dryland wheat takes special nerve, because it's done without irrigation, relying instead on luck and the weather. Walter Kellogg was lucky, more often than not, and also highly skilled, with a remarkable tolerance for risk. He also grazed cattle and operated his own grain elevators in the Texas Panhandle. With exceptional nerve once again, Walter Kellogg became a salvager for major insurance companies, fighting explosions in grain elevators and train derailments, which can blow up with greater force than a load of TNT, and often did. He devised a way to salvage as much grain as possible while leaving the rest to the fire, which could rage for as long as nine months. He was especially proud of never having lost any employee's life in more than 25 years of dangerous work. During this period, he acquired, owned and operated a family ranch in northeastern New Mexico, and that area would forever more hold a special place in his heart. Still not one for the easy way, Walter Kellogg next joined the original panel of trustees for the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts of the Southern United States. Dealing with the catastrophe in banking, oil and real estate of the late 1980s, he was salvaging once again, this time the distressed assets of distinguished companies. It was then that he and his wife moved to Dallas. On Oct. 23, 2002, his birthday, he suffered a significant stroke which forced him to retire. He recovered sufficiently, however, to return with his family and closest friends to his passions of hunting and fishing. He continued to introduce children and many friends to the deep pleasures of the outdoors. In the last six months, he enjoyed fishing trips to Mexico and Canada with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his devoted wife of 50 years, Marylee Cowden Kellogg, formerly of Midland, (their anniversary would have been this Friday); three daughters, Lea Kellogg Barfield, Ann Kellogg Schooler and husband Matt and Abbie Kellogg Milisci and husband Chris; two sons, Guy Clement Kellogg and wife Laura and Luke Cowden Kellogg and wife Estee; a sister, Carol Anne Staub; 12 grandchildren, Bo Barfield, Annabel Barfield, Cristina Schooler, Sam Schooler, Emily Kellogg, Kathryn Kellogg, Guy Tom Kellogg, C.C.
