"Rusty" Elwell Jr. Donald J. "Rusty" Elwell Jr., 61, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with the Rev. G.A. Roach, chaplain of Northwest Texas Hospital, officiating. Mr. Elwell was born July 7, 1945, in Plainview to Donald and Joyce Elwell Sr. He graduated from Amarillo High School and West Texas University with a degree in psychology. He had been a commercial balloon pilot and operated the Amarillo National Bank balloon for 20 years. He was a veteran of the National Guard. The family would like to give special thanks to Northwest Texas Heart Hospital and the Northwest Texas Hospital Amarillo Heart Group physicians. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Brenda Karen Elwell, on July 27, 2006. Survivors include an uncle, Red Childers of Boren; cousins, Harold and Pat Duff and Mike and Lethea Holmes, all of Lubbock, Linda Fisher of Princeton, Brian Childers of Fort Worth and Mike Childers and Dixie Childers, both of Boren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kenneth Douglas Long Kenneth Douglas Long, 59, formerly of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Long was born Jan. 5, 1947, in Childress, and lived most of his life in Amarillo. Kenneth was a graduate of Amarillo High School, Class of 1965. He worked in the recap business for a number of years before moving on to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital. Kenneth was semi-retired and loved the outdoors, fishing, camping and living a life of independence, which he struggled so hard to achieve. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include a daughter, Jackie K. Long of Amarillo; a brother, Michael W. Long of Highlands; a sister, Laura Long Bengston of Amarillo; and two aunts, Carol Cooley and Linda Frost, both of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wanda Jean Ford Wanda Jean Ford, 76, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006. Mrs. Ford was born May 6, 1930, in Noel and lived in Pampa for many years before moving to Amarillo in 2004. She married William Ford on July 5, 1953, in Clovis, N.M. He passed away in 2003. She was a homemaker and loved being "Grandma" to her family. She loved playing bingo, slot machines and fishing. Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Ford of Amarillo, Della Pace of Clayton, N.M., and Alice Jones of Shattuck, Okla.; two sons, Johnny Ford of Abilene and Wesley Ford of Dallas; four brothers, J.D. Mr. Dabney was born in Melrose, Colo., and had been a resident of Amarillo for 53 years. He was a self-employed stonemason and a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Dabney of Amarillo; a son, John William Dabney of Grand Canyon, Ariz.; a sister, Nettie Richardson of Pueblo, Colo.; three grandchildren, Corbie Lynn Raymond and Kriss and Kyle Maxwell; and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Autumn Raymond and Jada Maxwell. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ellen Yows Lawrence Ellen Yows Lawrence, 61, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Ellen was born Oct. 27, 1944, in Borger. She graduated from Amarillo High School, the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in education and sociology and California State University at Long Beach with a master's in education and social welfare. She was director of social services for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center from 1989 to 2003, where she also served as the child development specialist coordinator, chairman of the child advocacy committee, and served on the early childhood intervention steering committee, high-risk infant tracking steering committee and cleft palate team. She was chairman of the community dental oversight committee, a bereavement counselor for Crown of Texas Hospice and taught at Amarillo College, in the AISD and in the Los Angeles school system. She was named Social Worker of the Year by the NASW, was active in the Amarillo Area HIV/AIDS Coalition and Panhandle AIDS Support Organization, and served on the boards of the Panhandle Area Cancer Council, March of Dimes, Amarillo Community Council, Widowed Persons' Services, Women's Coalition for Change, League of Women Voters, Boy Scouts of America, Opportunity School and High Plains Civil Liberties Union. She was president of the Amarillo Art Alliance, a life member of the Amarillo Symphony and Lone Star Ballet guilds, a member of the Junior League, a graduate of Leadership Amarillo, a Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the St. Andrew's School Parent's Auxiliary and a docent at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum. Mr. McGuire was born Oct. 24, 1915, and lived most of his life in the Isabel/Medicine Lodge area and graduated from Isabel High School. He married Marjorie Watkins in 1943 in Medicine Lodge. She passed away in 1985. He worked on farm with his uncles when he was a young man and as a welder in the oil field and in manufacturing for more than 40 years before retiring in 1982. He moved to Amarillo in 2005. Survivors include a son, Jim McGuire and wife Peggy of Amarillo; a daughter, Linda Hibler and husband James of Blue Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He worked at Phillips Petroleum as a foreman until he became disabled. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in United Methodist Church of Groom with Weldon Rives, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery in Claude by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., in Amarillo. Mr. Alward was born July 10, 1931, in Waveland, Ind., to Clarence Evert and Ethel Day Alward. He attended school in West Terre Haute, Ind., Lubbock, Tucson, Ariz., and Amarillo. He enjoyed the challenge of moving around as a child and looked forward to each move as a new adventure. While in Amarillo High School he joined the Naval Reserve. On the outbreak of the Korean War, Al Alward dropped out of high school, quit the Naval Reserve and joined the Army. He distinguished himself on the battlefield and earned the rank of staff sergeant. Upon returning to Amarillo, he went to barber school, using this trade to put himself through four years of college. He met the love of his life, Virginia Ann Duncan, and married her on Nov. 11, 1954. He earned his real estate license and sold more than $1 million worth of homes in the late '50s and early '60s for the Odom Co. in Amarillo. His sales ability took him on the road where he sold janitorial supplies. He began his own company, AAA Chemical, and operated it for 30 years. He and his wife, Virginia, also operated Big House Antiques in Claude, where they lived for 30 years. They moved to Groom in 1998. He was a member of the 23rd Infantry Regiment Organization of the Korean War and a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 4747 in Vernon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; three sons, Jerry Dean, Steven Ray and David Ray; his parents; and a brother, Ernie. Survivors include a daughter, Donna Burton and husband Jim of Groom; a son, Terry Alward and wife Brenda of Dumas; four grandchildren, Melody Simpson, April and Brandon Jones, all of Amarillo, and Brittnee Beevers of Dumas; a brother, Willard "Bud" Alward of Amarillo; and three brothers of his heart, George Anderson of Evansville, Ind., Roland Dollmeyer of Rapid City, Idaho and John Sybert of Granite City, Ill. Mrs. Calvert was born Jan. 19, 1922, in West to Charlie "C.R." and Lela Campbell. She married Carlos Calvert on Dec. 17, 1941, in Waco. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1998. Throughout her life, Annie Calvert was a devoted Christian wife and mother. Her gentle spirit and tenderness toward others will be remembered by those who knew and loved her. She enjoyed cooking for others, teaching children's Bible classes, gardening and painting beautiful landscapes. Her thoughtfulness, insight and faith in God continually helped create a more abundant life for those she loved. Her loving presence will be a lasting blessing to her children, family and friends. Milton was born Aug. 24, 1915, on the family ranch in Palo Duro Canyon to Bennett Hines Capers and Edith Lyle Capers. After graduating from Amarillo High School, he enrolled at Texas Christian University, where he played three years on the championship football team in the 1930s. During his career of accounting services, he established his own certified public accounting firm, where he served professionally for more than 30 years. In addition to certified public accounting professional organizations, he was a member until his retirement years of University Baptist Church, The Downtown Kiwanis Club and Colonial Country Club. He will want to be remembered as a man devoted first of all to his beloved wife, with whom he shared more than 68 years, declaring her the most beautiful person he ever saw, and then their children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. On the underside of their wedding band were their initials, B.R.B. to M.B.C. "Mizpah," the quote from Genesis 31:49, "God will watch over us when we are apart." In his 92nd year he will be remembered as a man of admirable ways by his children, their children and their grandchildren, who will always remember the promise of Mizpah, "We are in his care always as we trudge the road to happy destiny and leave our footprints in the sands of time!" He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Betty Rebekah Buster Capers.
