Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Fourth & Cameo Church of Christ with Larry Hart officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Muffley Funeral Home. Destiny was born Sept. 19, 2006, in Lubbock. Survivors include her parents of Clovis; two brothers, Jaylen Baccas and Devin Baccas, both of Clovis; her grandmother, Cherry Williamson of Spanish Town, Jamaica; and her great-grandmother, Mae Odom of Clovis. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Lex Baker Jr. CLOVIS, N.M. - Robert Lex Baker Jr., 82, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Parkland Baptist Church with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom and Doug Brooks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mr. Baker was born July 27, 1924, in House to Maggie Rosella Hopper and Robert Lex Baker Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and after discharge moved to Clovis to work for the AT&SF Railway. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee; a daughter, Bobbie Loflin Fulks of Friona, Texas; a son, Ron Baker of Clovis; two sisters, Billie Jean Hamer of Slaton, Texas, and Betty Lee Wilton of Fort Sumner; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Vista Care. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amarillo Dorothea Jean Messenger Dorothea Jean Messenger, 81, of Amarillo, formerly of Borger, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. Mrs. Messenger was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Iola, Kan., to Dorothea L. Rath and John H. Brinkman. She married Kennett C. Messenger on June 11, 1944, in Fort Worth. Survivors include two daughters, Gayla J. Smith of Yukon, Okla., and Patricia A. Demand of Houston; two sons, Kennett C. Messenger Jr. of Amarillo and Lance R. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Triangle Baptist Church in Clovis, N.M., with the Rev. Terry Martin officiating. Burial will be in Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis. Mrs. Wesley was born May 30, 1945, in Greenville, Miss., to Ernest and Rebecca Mayfield Harris. She was employed as a domestic worker in private homes and enjoyed cooking. Survivors include a son, Eddie Wesley of Missouri City; four sisters, Doris McGinnis, Lydia Hager and Earlene Harris, all of Clovis, and Bobbie Harris of Greenville; two brothers, Dean Harris of Atlanta and Ernest Harris of New Haven, Conn.; and two grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Katie Close SHAMROCK - Katie Close, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Lowe, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors. Katie Pearl Close was born Oct. 6, 1909, in Elkwater, W.Va., to Alexander and Bernice Bell Hamilton. She graduated from Tygarts Valley High School in Huttonsville, W.Va. She received her bachelor's degree from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va. She received a master's degree in 1952 from West Texas University in Canyon. In June 1928, Katie married George Close, whom she had met at Elkins College in W.Va., and they moved to Wheeler County. They made their home in the Lela and Shamrock communities. Katie and George lived on a farm 8 miles west of Shamrock. They were chosen Wheeler County Homemakers of the Year in the mid '30s, which meant they raised practically everything they needed. They raised hogs, beef, chickens and canned their vegetables and fruits. Katie was active in the Methodist church in Shamrock. She sang in the choir and held local, regional and State offices in UMW. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron. She was also Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls for several years. She was a member of the Fine Arts and B&PW clubs, holding offices in both. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Club, a teacher's honorary sorority. Katie was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a Pink Lady for the Shamrock Hospital auxiliary for years. Katie began teaching school in Lela after World War II, in 1946. She started teaching in Shamrock in 1950. She taught first grade for 30 years. She is fondly remembered by many who had her as their teacher. She later wrote articles for children's books. She served a two-year term on the Texas Board of Education when her son, Bob Close, was in the Texas Legislature. After the death of George in 1954, Katie married John Glasscock in 1959. They traveled to the capitals of all 50 states. They combined families to have four children and 13 grandchildren. John passed away in 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bob Close; two grandchildren, Sherry Collinsworth and Alan Close; a great-grandchild, Bobbie Lee Close; a son-in-law, Eugene Collinsworth; four brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Collinsworth of Shamrock; a son, Bryan Close and wife Laverne of Shamrock; a stepson, the Rev. James Glasscock and wife Lois of Fallsington, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Close of Marshfield, Mo.; a dear friend, Ann Lee Turner of Branson, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, Shane, Susan, Sandra, Scott, Bence, Laura, Paige, Lee, Paris, John R. and Lee Ann; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Kane O'Loughlin Kane O'Loughlin, 18, of Canyon died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006. Kane O'Loughlin was born April 26, 1988, in Amarillo to Richard Kane O'Loughlin Jr. and Lori Lynn Davis O'Loughlin. He was a senior at Canyon High School and loved music and choir. He was involved in the school musicals and Show Choir. He lettered in choir and theater arts, as well as qualifying in both UIL All Region Choir and All District Choir in 2005-2006. He attended University Church of Christ and was involved in church activities. He loved his friends and worked at McDonald's in Canyon. Survivors include his parents, Rick and Lori O'Loughlin of Canyon; his grandparents, Evon and Rudy Wruble of Canyon; his granddad, Dale Davis of Amarillo; his great-grandmother, Oleta Pierce of Canyon; and a stepsister, Kerensa O'Loughlin Kremer of San Diego.
