Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick officiating. Private burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Elsa Porter was born in 1920 in Spearman. She was a graduate of Texas Christian University with a degree in English literature and history and the University of Oklahoma with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in vocal performance. While at OU, she studied with Dame Eva Turner, visiting professor of voice from the Royal Opera Company and Royal Academy of Music in London. After teaching in public schools in Oklahoma and Texas, she joined the music faculty of WTAMU in 1956 and retired in 1989. Porter's vocal studio is remembered for students who have distinguished themselves in winning numerous competitions in both regional and national performances and who continue their professional work in teaching, music ministry, and singing with her tradition of excellence. Several are involved in opera careers: Mila Gibson, Founder/Director of Amarillo Opera, Emily Pulley with Metropolitan Opera Company and others too numerous to mention in this listing. Her own performances in faculty recitals and concerts are memorable to those who heard her throughout the years: University of Oklahoma Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Singer of the Year Young Artist Auditions, Chicago Theater of the Air and in oratorios in the Sanctuary Choir of Polk Street United Methodist Church. She served the latter as director of Children's Choir, 1954-56. While teaching at WTAMU, Porter served as assistant director of Opera Workshop, 1958-1974. She established the Elsa Porter Continuing Voice Scholarship many years ago. She has been a recipient of numerous awards including Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Golden Nail Touch Teacher of the Year and Amarillo Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year, 1988. She served on the board of directors of Amarillo Opera, in its early years and remained a loyal, generous supporter of the productions. Porter received the rank of professor emeritus at WTAMU in 1992. She had unfailing commitment to the art of singing. She has left a legacy of faithfulness and devotion to her students, family and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Chalmers Porter and Frank Willard Porter. Survivors include a sister, Rosanne Haas of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a sister-in- law, Betty Porter of Fargo, N.D.; five nephews, Douglas Porter and wife Pam of Bourbonnais, Ill., Dr. William Porter and wife Laura of Fargo, Dr. Raymond Porter and wife Natalie of Grand Rapids, Minn., Chalmers Haas and wife Kristine of Idaho Falls and Alfred Haas of Spokane, Wash.; three nieces, Dr. Jean Porter of South Bend, Ind., Dr. Christina Witte of Hudson, Ohio, and Carrie Rose Lindley and husband Doug of Pocatello, Idaho; and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews. Services are pending. Arrangements are by Newcomer Family Funeral Home of Casper. Mr. Burgess was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Canyon to Bob and Jewel Burgess. He was raised in Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carol Burgess and his twin brother, Gwen Burgess. Coulter St. Mr. Jackson married Dale Morris in August 1997 in Amarillo. He enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his Harley and driving his truck. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Albert Rodriguez. Survivors include his wife, Dale; a son, Andrew Fleming of Amarillo; a daughter, Karrissa Jackson of Amarillo; his mother, Jo Rodriguez of Amarillo; a brother, James Jackson of Amarillo; and his grandparents, Jim and Norma Jackson of Amarillo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canyon Claire Louise Littleton Brandon Claire Louise Littleton Brandon, 97, of Canyon died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Amarillo. Private burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Claire Louise Littleton Brandon was born Aug. 8, 1909, in San Bernardino, Calif., to Arthur Davis Littleton and Edith Fanny Harding Littleton and graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1927. She worked at Jennings Dress Shop for many years and later retired from West Texas State University Book Store on Jan. 31, 1985, after many years of service. Claire was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon. She married Lewis Fields Brandon in Yuma, Ariz., on Feb. 15, 1930. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1966. Claire was known to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as "Nanny." She set a constant positive example and taught all of her family the value of unqualified love. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Dwight Littleton; and two sisters, Gladys Chandler and Lois Snow. Survivors include three sons, Larry Brandon and wife Tina of Amarillo, John Brandon of Round Rock and David Brandon of Boulder, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Don Ray CHANNING - Don Ray, 69, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Cal Farley's Boys Ranch Chapel. Burial will be in Channing Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home of Dalhart. Don, a native of the Texas Panhandle was born April 7, 1937, at Adair Hospital in Clarendon to Oma and Rhondy Ray, and lived on a cattle ranch near Clarendon until 1953. He graduated from Canyon High School in 1955, and from West Texas State University with a B.S. degree and Master of Education in Art. He served as a graduate assistant in the Art Department at WTSU, worked for the American Quarter Horse Journal, and was the first graphic arts director for the regional education service center in Amarillo. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. He became a full-time professional artist in 1972, and produced a quantity of paintings and sculpture, much of which reflect the landscapes of Texas and New Mexico as well as authenticity of a bygone era in ranching and Southern and Western historical subjects. Survivors include his wife of nearly 27 years, Janie; four daughters Rhona Baucum and Bob of McKinney, Kellye Reil and Scott of Westminster, Colo., Lori Vincent and Scott of Channing and Katherine Koontz and Kory of Sudan; a son, Jack Loudder and Joni of Frisco; his beloved eight grandchildren, Maddie Baucum, Jae, Harlee and Ashlee Koontz, Jacob and Ethan Vincent and Molli and Calli Loudder; a sister, Margaret Elley and Clint of Hutto; his mother-in-law and-father-in-law, Annie May and Erwin Meyer of Canyon; and so many other family members and friends who mourn the passing of this gifted, gentle loving man who helped us see the beauty and history of the Texas Panhandle through his legacy of paintings and sculpture.
