She graduated from Wellington High School in 1955, where she was an excellent student, popular and involved in many school-related activities. Rikki possessed exceptional secretarial skills and took great pride in that fact, holding positions as secretary to the dean of home economics at North Texas State University and eventually serving as executive secretary to the director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) for the state of New Mexico. Rikki worked unselfishly so that her husband could attend college, and when her husband was employed at Adams State College in Colorado, it was "her turn," and she made the most of it, completing her bachelor's and master's degrees from the same college. Though reluctant to leave secretarial work, she accepted a position with the Sierra Grand Consolidated Schools in Fort Garland, Colo., teaching business education and came to love teaching. Upon moving to Vernon in 1977, Rikki was promptly employed at Vernon College, where she taught until her retirement in the spring of 2004. Rikki is best remembered for her unending patience and interest in individual students, teaching skills to many who were convinced they could never learn. Characteristically, she once volunteered to teach a friend's wife, also her student, how to drive after her husband had given up. And she was successful! When enrollment in traditional secretarial classes diminished, Rikki enrolled in the doctoral program at North Texas State University, completing much of her course work for that degree before deciding that spending time with grandchildren was more important. And everyone agreed. Rikki and her husband, Newell, were both members of the Methodist church since their marriage in 1956 at First Methodist Church in Wellington. Survivors include a son, Joe Paul Van Pelt and wife Jennifer; a grandson, Austin Newell Van Pelt; two daughters, Sandala Downes and husband Mike; grandchildren, Misty Ulrey and Matthew and Brianne Downes; a great- granddaughter, Kairi Ulrey; and Suzanne Isbell and husband Geoff; and grandchildren, Bryson, Dalton, Saule and Asa Isbell.
