Memorial Mass will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Sarah Elizabeth Brickle Grabber, 71, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, in Amarillo. The daughter of George Allison Brickle and Letha Mae Kelly Brickle, Sarah was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Florence, S.C. Sarah spent her childhood years in the Carolinas, having graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington. She completed her education in Florida. She received an accounting degree from Rollins College and began her career with the federal government as the chief of internal review, Criminal Investigation Division, Department of the Army. There she met her husband, Gene, who also was an auditor with CID. They both traveled the world for five years, and then lived for seven more years in the Netherlands and the Mideast. After many years of honorable service, Gene encouraged her (with no small amount of fussing) to take a medical retirement so they could enjoy life with family and friends. Retirement did not last long before they decided to fulfill Gene's lifelong dream of being a truck driver. Both Sarah and Gene trained for and received their CDL licenses. Sarah worked with a truck manufacturer and designed a sleeper cab that was so innovative the company asked to use the design for shows and future sales. Retiring again, Sarah and Gene traveled to visit family and friends before finally settling in Gene's home state of Texas with his family, who embraced Sarah as a beloved family member and friend. Though Sarah's first love was the gently rolling waves of the East coast beaches, she fell equally in love with the Texas Panhandle and the warmth of its people. Before she passed away and while not well, Sarah was instrumental in creating and forming the volunteer greeter program for the play "Texas." She was enormously proud of the program and people involved and won the Golden Nail Award for 2005 in recognition of her hard work and commitment to the program. In spite of all her accomplishments, the one she was proudest of was her daughter, Tina Long. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Letha Brickle; and a son, David Grabber.
