Celebration of life services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Linda N. Cook officiating. On Oct. 10, 2006, Edgar Max Baer passed away unexpectedly at his home in Amarillo. Born Sept. 29, 1930, in Helena, Ark., Ed grew up in Wisner, La., as a competitive and superior athlete. A championship bowler with a consistent record of perfect games under his belt, Ed went on to set records in Denver running the 100-yard dash in an award-winning 9.9 seconds. Scouted and recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals for a professional baseball career, he found himself suddenly needed by Uncle Sam and went to Korea in service of the U.S. Army. Before shipping overseas, Ed married Edna Tate, whom he met in Denver. After his release from duty he came to Amarillo to join his wife and new baby daughter, DeNeice. In 1953 Ed started Amarillo Landscape & Sprinkler with a pair of rusty shears and a pocket full of initiative. By the 1970s, the company had become one of the premier contract landscape and sprinkler firms in the Panhandle. Its high- profile clientele of the day included Northwest Texas Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, Dr. Malouf Abraham, Sybil and Don Harrington, Phillips Petroleum, The Bobbins Memorial, The Shores housing development, Rep. Warren Chisum, Amarillo Garden Center, Discovery Center and area ranches, parks, public schools and banks. As president of the Texas Irrigators Association, Ed formed the water conservation board. He was a pioneer in mid-1980s xeriscaping. Ed introduced the ability to grow sod locally in Amarillo. Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman and an excellent bridge and chess player. An active spiritual student, Ed was a leader at Unity Church and helped bring Amarillo's first Montessori school to the area. Survivors include his wife, Edna Ahna Baer; and two daughters, DeNeice Kenehan of San Diego and Kay Martinez of Waco. Ed is also mourned by his grandchildren, Brittain Beam and Conner Beam of Amarillo and Jordan Martinez of Waco. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis M. "Denny" Buckley Dennis M. "Denny" Buckley, 58, of Amarillo died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Thompson Park at the boat house with the Rev. Mrs. Cairns married Ron Cairns in January 1983 in Amarillo. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Burnett was born July 10, 1941, in Los Angeles to Shepard and Wilma Henry Townsend. She married Walter Burnett on March 25, 1967, in Amarillo. Mrs. Burnett was a vibrant woman who had a passion for living. She and her husband enjoyed riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycle, four-wheeling and fishing at the lake. Her greatest enjoyment came from her family. Survivors include her husband; a son, Jon Burnett; a daughter, Janet Perry; her mother, Wilma Futrell; a sister, Kathy Townsend; and two grandchildren, Savanna and Dylan Perry. She was a resident of Gruver before moving to Claude in 1979, and had been an Amarillo resident for the past seven years. She married Willard Cook on Dec. 17, 1938, in McLean. She worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. during World War II, and worked in the cafeteria in the Meade, Kan., schools before her retirement. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church in Claude. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 6, 1995; six sisters; and a brother. At the age of 17, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and later joined the U.S. Air Force. He came to Amarillo in 1956, and married Miss James Ella Lofton in 1958. He was a taxi cab operator working for Dependable Cab Co. and others throughout the years. Survivors include nine sons, Darrell W. Mrs. Orr was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Waurika, Okla., to Pearl and Fred Hopson. She was a cadet nurse during World War II, and married Delmar David Orr on Jan. 20, 1946. Mr. Orr preceded her in death in 1987. She was a longtime member of the International Club and the Federated Women's Club and an early volunteer and longtime supporter of BSA Hospice. Mrs. Orr had resided for the past five years at Park Place, where she had made many friends and pursued her passion of caring for others. Mrs. Eckman was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Sandtown, Ark., to Elmer and Amy Chaudoin. She and Don Eckman were married in 1936 in Oklahoma and moved to Texas in 1939. They moved to Panhandle in 1942 where they built Panhandle Laundry in the mid-1960s and owned and operated it until retiring some 20 years later. He preceded her in death in 1995 after nearly 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Eckman was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Panhandle, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and in other capacities of the church, including the Prime Timers organization. After moving to Waco in 2000 to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Jim Naylor, she continued her activity in church organizations as an associate member of Woodway First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law of Waco; two grandsons, Don Naylor of Waco and Gary Naylor and wife Vikki of San Angelo; three great- grandchildren, Lindsey Jackson and husband Rob of Burleson, Kanji Adams and husband Danny of Plano and Cameron Naylor of Waco; a great-great-grandson, Preston Adams of Plano; two sisters, Bertie McIlvain of Victoria and Lissie Turnage and husband Ray of Johnson City, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary graduated from White Deer High School and was a star running back on the 1963-1966 Bucks football teams. He went on to play for Oklahoma State University. Gary was employed by Franklin Electric of Fort Worth. What friends and family will remember most about Gary was that he embraced life. He loved sports including golf and fishing. He was a participator not an observer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
